Nobody's trading up for MHJ or Alt, that doesn't make any sense to me, even though they both look to be incredible prospects. The cost for getting into the top three is too high to not take a QB. The first three picks are going to be QB's.

Paul, have you watched other drafts ?

Many times teams trade up, and it's not always for the person you expect.

It's possible someone wants to trade ahead of Arizona to take the best player in this draft, MHJ. You might even see Arizona move up one spot, to not get poached. Remember when the Vikings traded back one spot, picked up another pick from that team, and I think the Vikings selected Matt Kalil.

Skor North did a mock draft, where I believe they traded up to #3 (Williams and Maye were the 1st 2 picks), they liked Daniels and McCarthy almost equally (which surprised me), they traded back from 3 to 5, picking up a 2nd rounder for next year.

It made sense for SD to trade up, if they really liked MHJ, and they now have a great need for a WR. In this Mock draft, someone traded up to 4 for Alt, so at 5, the Vikings still had a choice between Daniels and McCarthy, and they chose Daniels.

This is what I hope plays out and it is as cheap as I can expect to move up to 3...

I'm pretty sold on Maye, and though Daniels is on the wish list, I just don't see us being able to get to 2 to get him

I think that is wishful thinking. 11, 23 and 129 wont get it done.

I like this, because its done by the people that actually have insight into each team.

NFL beat writer mock draft 2.0: Vikings, Broncos trade up into top 10 to grab QBs
The Athletic NFL Staff
Mar 21, 2024

The 2024 NFL Draft is just five weeks away, and the jockeying for the top quarterbacks remains this year’s buzziest topic.

Once again, we gathered our NFL reporters for a virtual mock draft, with each representing the team they cover. And once again, teams in need of a quarterback were willing to pay a huge price. Two of our GMs traded up into the top 10 to grab their quarterbacks of the future, while another team moved back up into the late first round to go after its own.

3. Minnesota Vikings (from NE*): Drake Maye, QB, North Carolina
Trade: Vikings trade No. 11, No. 23, a first-round pick in 2025 and a second-round pick in 2026 to the Patriots for No. 3.
Look, climbing this high and parting with three first-rounders is not for the faint of heart. But if you’re going to swing, why not swing big? The Vikings’ connection to Maye is well-known: Quarterbacks coach Josh McCown coached him at Myers Park High School in Charlotte, N.C. But even before McCown, Vikings scouts had eyed Maye for several years. He may need some time to develop, but that might align perfectly with head coach Kevin O’Connell’s views on what a young quarterback needs to become successful. Minnesota has an experienced QB room and loads of skill players. Now’s the time to try to find its quarterback of the future. — Alec Lewis

--------------

Patriots took Olu Fashanu, OT, Penn State at 11 and Adonai Mitchell, WR, Texas at 23.

QBs went:
01: Bears, Williams
02: Commanders, Daniels
03: Vikings, Maye
08: Broncos (trade up) McCarthy
21: Raiders (trade up) Penix

Nix was not drafted in the 1st round.

https://theathletic.com/5356654/2024/03/21/nfl-mock-beat-draft-vikings-broncos-mccarthy/

I would have no problem with this one. It's a steep price, but it you don't wind up at the top of the draft, the only way to get a franchise QB is to pay the heavy price.

If the Vikings can't get to 3 and McCarthy is on the board at 8, that would be a reasonable trade up to get him. Something along the lines of 11, 23 & 108 for 8, 43 & 74.

I have no interest in Penix at 11 or Nix at 23. I'd rather grab BPA and go QB with next year's inevitable top 5 pick.

Queasy us in the proverbial hot seat.. if he doesn’t get a viable QBi. This draft he will be looking for a new job, outside Vikings Organization, Sommer than later.

I hope, but do not know, that the Wilfs are a bit tired of pouring contract money down a freaking sink hole, covered by a shiny new, but getting old, stadium.

The stadium is paid for.

Time to quit Fn around and get themselves into that ultra exclusive club of owners with SB Trophies.

Did Oregon's WRs get so much YAC because of Nix's excellent, Brady-like precision ball placement ?

Nix is very reminiscent of Brady in the sense that his game was mostly quick, short, timing passes. He did have precision ball placement that very much helped his receivers get the most out of every reception..

If you can get the ball to playmakers quickly and accurately they have a lot better chance to make something happen. Ponder was pretty much a dink and dunker but was very slow to get the ball out, inaccurately too I might add. No wonder Percy had migraines.

Yes I have watched the draft religiously for probably 30 years, in fact I take vacation from work. It's my second favorite holiday. I certainly could be wrong but the drafts you are referring to seem very different to me than this one. Every year the situations presented are very different.

You are certainly correct there are often big surprises but two things I rarely see.
1. When there are potential stud QB's at the very top rarely is a team willing to trade QB ransom for a non QB player. Those picks have significantly higher value than picks not really slotted for a top QB pick. If you mortgage your future, a QB is what you do that for.
2. when the teams picking in those positions are heavily needing a QB, and they had the good fortune to lose enough games to grab one, they don't give up that opportunity for a franchise changing opportunity.

Vikings 2024 7-round mock draft 11.0: What if they wait until 23 for a QB?

Totally different direction but I bet a lot of people would be ok with it.

I’m warming up to not selling the farm to move up. If we can upgrade this team with picks and then the QB room totally different with Darnold/Penix it could serve us well.

Nobody's trading up for MHJ or Alt, that doesn't make any sense to me, even though they both look to be incredible prospects. The cost for getting into the top three is too high to not take a QB. The first three picks are going to be QB's.

Is whoever left going to be worth it.

IMO no I don't think so at all.

JJ does not seem to be a high first round prospect to me. He will obviously go high but I think he's more suited to our 23 pick or the second round. Maybe I'm wrong but I just don't see it. I do think winning the championship and the talent at Michigan is clouding peoples mind on him , just my opinion.

I would trade up to 2 or 3 for Daniels, and could probably be talked into Maye pretty easily.

After that I'd rather have Penix at 11 than JJ at 5.

I don't see JJ making it to 11.

If we fail to get a QB by 11 (say Denver or Vegas trade up to 9 to poach Penix), I'd consider a flyer on Nix at 23.

That is my plan at the outset. Draft the best offensive lineman at 11 and Nix at 23.

Not sure there is generational IOL prospect worthy of that high of a pick in this draft. But we absolutely need help there.

I believe there is very little chance of Nix getting past the Broncos at 12. We have 11. If we want him we are going to have to take him there. However, I would prefer McCarthy as long as it's not in a trade up. McCarthy will probably be gone, but it's definitely not a sure thing.

I don't like the idea of giving up next year's 1st, unless it's to get to #2.

IF the Vikings don't offer NE next year's 1st, and they get no other offers, I think NE will take BPA, and that would be MHJ.

NE has a history of getting the GOAT in the last round of the draft, so they may not be so eager to spend their 1st pick on a QB, especially one they're not that high on.

And they have drafted a QB in the first round in the last few years as well. Mac Jones.

Didn't work out, but I think that was coaching and poor development. Belichick hired a DC for OC and that stunted Jones development big time...

MICHIGAN pro day today. Nine general managers and seven head coaches are scheduled to attend.

Not on that list? Vikings GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and head coach Kevin O’Connell.

[Clearly, McCarthy is our target. Unless Kwesi is trying to throw us off his Dior Sauvage Baccarat scent with a double-back retrace-your-steps-in-camo-slippers maneuver.]
