I am saying the draft doesn't fall the way we want it to, so the Vikings don't use #23 to trade up.

You trade back to once again have a 2nd this year, and regain a 2nd next year (maybe one that will be higher than Minnesota's pick), and then you once again have a 2nd next year, which might be used for ammo to move up next year, if need be.

If Kwesi doesn't think there is a player worth the #23 pick, he should be fired on the spot.

100% agree. I am expecting some potentially great players to be available at that spot.

Prediction. Not necessarily what I want but what I think will happen.

The Vikings trade up but only a couple of spots, maybe to 8, and take JJ McCarthy. McCarthy could slip to 11 but when he’s still on the board at 8 they’ll get nervous about someone else jumping up and sniping him. So they make the minor trade up as insurance and without selling the whole farm to do it.

Edit: oh I guess this exact scenario is being tossed around here already. I should read more previous posts.

ESPN. Yates final Mock:

Projected trade: Minnesota can't wait any longer
Vikings get: No. 8
Falcons get: No. 11, No. 129 and a 2025 third-rounder

This is a smaller move up the board than we've discussed frequently during the pre-draft process -- Minnesota jumping into the Nos. 3-5 range -- but the Vikings can slide up just three spots at a much less prohibitive cost to snag a quarterback here based on the way the board is coming together.

8. Minnesota Vikings (via mock trade with ATL)
J.J. McCarthy, QB, Michigan

McCarthy would be in an excellent situation with Minnesota's supporting cast, and the Vikings would also preserve their No. 23 pick by moving to only No. 8 to get him. McCarthy has the high-end accuracy to get the ball to Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, as well as the mobility to pick up yards on the ground. And I know Minnesota has Sam Darnold, but I believe McCarthy would start right away.

23. Minnesota Vikings (via CLE/HOU)
Laiatu Latu, EDGE, UCLA

Latu would join Jonathan Greenard for Minnesota's new-look pass rush on defense. He had the best tape of any defensive player in the class and can become a double-digit sack artist in the NFL. After all, he had 23.5 of them over the past two seasons at UCLA. Medical concerns over a prior neck injury (while at Washington in 2020) would be the only reason he slides to this slot.

-----------

He has Byron Murphy going 11, Penix 13 and Nix 19 to the Rams.

Make it Chop over Latu and I’m all in.

Breaking draft news to shake up the draft?
I'm hearing Giants making a hard push for 3 and Rams making a push for top 10 to NOT draft a QB.

So by saying the Vikings shouldn't trade down from #23 (should a trade up not happen), you're saying only the Vikings benefitted from the trade up, that the Texans didn't benefit.

I'm kind of psyched for Chop also, but he had very little production at the college level. Neither did Hunter.

There is nothing wrong with considering a trade down, but I believe the difference in players at 23 vs our original 42 will be massive. If we stick and pick with 23 I believe we will win the trade.

PFF's Final mock:

11. MINNESOTA VIKINGS: QB J.J. MCCARTHY, MICHIGAN
After all that talk of the Vikings giving up the kingdom for a quarterback, they pick an ideal player to develop here at No. 11.

30. *TRADE* MINNESOTA VIKINGS: DI BRADEN FISKE, FLORIDA STATE
Fiske has taken a lot of top-30 visits this cycle, and the Vikings were one of his stops. If they can trade back to the later part of Round 1 or the early part of Round 2, I think they’d be in on him giving them a pass-rush presence in the middle.

QBs go 1, 2 3. Penix goes 13 to the Raiders. Nix goes undrafted in the first.

Less than an hour away right? No news is good news. The longer it takes for the first trade to happen the better for our Vikings.
Oops it was 2 hours away.

I really believe the Vikings won't have the cajones to wait all the way to 11. If McCarthy slides past 7 I think we move up.

How rude.

It's great news. The Giants are supposed to be only interested in Maye so that clears a path for McCarthy to slide a long ways down. Possibly all the way to 11.

Daniel Jeremiah, NFL.com:
McCarthy and Penn State Edge Chop Robinson

I wouldn’t rule out Minnesota trading up a couple spots for a quarterback, but all the information I’ve gathered in the last couple days suggests the Vikings are not crazy about making a bold move up the board for McCarthy. I believe they’ve grown more comfortable with Michael Penix Jr. as a fallback option if a team were to leapfrog them for McCarthy.

Robinson is a dynamic edge rusher who fills a need for Minnesota.

Pete Prisco, CBS Sports:
Washington QB Michael Penix Jr. and Illinois DL Johnny Newton

The Vikings don’t make the move to get a quarterback and sit here and take Penix. I think this is a move that will work out well for them in the long run.

The interior of their defense lacks a player who can push the pocket. Newton can be that guy to give Brian Flores a nice inside player.
