I watched every Gopher game last year and this is what Brosmer looked like to me.

He is very accurate and good at throwing through windows.
He makes quick reads and has a quick release.
He doesn't have particularly strong arm.
Physically, he is a little on the small side. He is fairly mobile.

Lack of a big arm and his age (24) probably kept him from being drafted. I think he will make the team. From what I have read, O'Connell and McKown both like him. If Howell continues to perform as he did in game 1, he will likely be QB2. Even if Howell face plants the rest of training camp and Brosmer continues to play well, the Vikings could look outside the organization for a backup. They may not want to go into the year with an unproven rookie backing up an unproven rookie.

David, maybe it wasn't just a poor team, maybe Howell just makes poor decisions which leads to too many INTs.

It would be nice to see Brosmer work with the #2s, it seemed like Howell was bailed out by some great catches, whereas Brosmer seemed to make quicker decisions, and more accurate throws. But it could have been because Brosmer was going against 3rd string defenders.

But I also agree with the person that said it doesn't seem like a good idea to have an inexperienced backup behind McCarthy, when you potentially have a stacked team. Maybe a trade for a veteran, or signing an unsigned veteran is in the works.

Howell had 1 good preseason outing, WRs bailed him out on a couple of throws; he has a past with a lot of INTs in regular season games, and hasn't looked very good in the Viking practices.

Context matters.

Howell was on a horrible team that threw the ball way too much.

He led the league in pass attempts, INTs and sacks.

He was a 23 year-old first time starter and he still was 5th in the league in completions, 15th in TDs, 13th in 1st downs.

There is talent there, but he was thrown into the deep end wearing cement shoes.

Howell stunk. Rypien was better than last week. Brosmer was so-so but pretty well under duress the whole second half. The oline was terrible. I'd like to believe the QB2 isn't on the roster yet.
