QB — Sam Howell

In the first preseason game, Howell looked like he was in command of the offense and quieted concerns about his struggles in practice. The second preseason game looked much more like his problematic practices. The Vikings’ backup went 1-for-5 with a 13-yard completion on an underneath pass to his tight end and had a good throw dropped by Lucky Jackson. Otherwise, he held onto the ball too long, scrambling twice and taking several hits.

His lowlight of the day came under pressure when he elected to heave the ball in the air under pressure rather than throw it away. The Patriots easily intercepted the pass.

The Vikings have to be extremely nervous about Howell and considering other options after this showing.

QB — Brett Rypien

The Vikings’ QB3 started his first drive with some quality execution, hitting Zavier Scott and Nick Vannett with gains of 18 and nine yards that took the offense into New England territory. A 9-yard completion to Lucky Jackson got them inside the red zone but back-to-back incompletions from Rypien ended the drive on downs. His fourth down throw flew over the receiver’s head in the back of the end zone when they only needed one yard for a first down.

Rypien got the ball back with under a minute left and a chance to get the Vikings on the board. He looked like he was in command, making two nice throws to Felton and another completion to Thayer Thomas. He just missed a touchdown pass but overthrew Thomas in the end zone. The drive ended when Lucky Jackson dropped an easy out route that would have given them one more shot at a touchdown.

Rypien finished with a solid 7-for-11 with 83 yards.

QB — Max Brosmer

The former Gopher came into the game and immediately got the offense moving with quick throws. He completed a 8-yard pass to Tim Jones, 6-yard throw to Myles Price and 6-yarder to Jeshaun Jones for a first down. However, the drive came to an end when Brosmer got sacked and missed Myles Price on a rollout.

On his second drive, Brosmer found Price downfield but the play was called back by penalty. He took a sack as he attempted to escape the Patriots’ pressure, setting up third-and-23. He got sacked again on third down.

On the first drive of the fourth quarter, Brosmer dropped a dime to Tim Jones down the sideline for 28 yards. It was a terrific touch pass. But the QB was let down at the end of the drive by a dropped pass and instant sack.

Brosmer had a chance to tie the game late but overthrew an open receiver and then got instantly pressured and threw underneath, forcing a punt.

He got the ball back with 1:46 at the 31-yard line and was immediately let down by his supporting cast with a drop and a holding penalty. But Brosmer stepped up under pressure and hit Jeshaun Jones to convert a fourth-and-long to keep the game alive. Then he found Jones on an out-breaking route for another first down.

Brosmer completed two more throws to bring them to the 13-yard line and then came within inches of Price catching a touchdown. Brosmer tossed an interception into the end zone on the final play, ending his solid day in unfortunate fashion.

So Howell is back to sucking, some will defend him to the end, and there are no other options on the roster or elsewhere. Got it.

Let's just hope JJ stays healthy; backup QBs rarely matter.

Don’t be ridiculous.

Nobody is happy with the backup QB situation.

Remains to be seen if the team makes a last ditch effort to change one below par candidate for another below par canidate.

Hard to see Kwesi eating crow and using ANOTHER late pick for a different backup.

QB and WR (for the first three games) are pretty big concerns.

Not sure I like O'Connell's approach to this game. He put Huber at LG where he wasn't good (last week he performed great at RG his natural position). This shuffling playing Olineman at different positions resulted in terrible Oline play giving up constant pressure.

While I understand he is seeing which guy is most versatile which is a important for roster depth. But it also messes with their mechanics and put the QB's in a tough spot.

Any interest in bringing in someone like Carson Wentz or Jeff Driskel? They are probably the best FAQB left.

Watching it now.

1st quarter is over 7-0 to NE. They played most of their starters until about 2 minutes left in the quarter and we played all 2nd and 3rd stringers. Some I've never even heard of. First series was a punt for them but we dropped a sure fire INT on a ball May sailed and should've (or, at least, could have) on another.

SH wasnt helped much by our lower tiered WR's but he also had 2 total mind blowing decisions. He panic scrambled on one where he didn't need to and his arm got hit on a release that led to a really bad INT. You either throw that away earlier or he had a lane to scramble. At first I thought he actually was trying to just chuck it OOB but a backside camera angle showed he was trying to squeeze a ball to Lucky Jackson. Even if his arm wasn't hit, from that angle, you could see it was a really bad decision.

ST's are atrocious. A long punt return given up and a fumbled KO that we got lucky on.

2nd quarter. Not a whole lot to brag about.

Mostly Dobbs versus Rypein and both were pretty awful. BR was better than SH but that's not much of an compliment. Obviously I know nothing but if I were a betting man I would say BR does not make the 53. You can tell by the way they call plays when he's in there. His stats weren't complete garbage but only had 1 decent throw. Most of his good stats were short completions or screens. Anytime he tried something over 10 yards he pretty much missed by an NFL mile. Same with Dobbs. The crew spent much of their collective breaths clowning him on the "hospital balls" he was throwing.

It came to nothing because it was the last play of the half but we gave up a 60 yard KO return to end it. ST's are just

3rd quarter was awesome! I would highly recommend, even if you don't like preseason games, watch the 3rd quarter alone.

KOC mic'd up the whole time and interacting with Leber/Bercich and motor mouth. You really get a unique perspective on what's happening. One one play KOC tells them as the play call comes in that if the S cheats down, they are going to have the opportunity for a go route but MB has to recognize it. He does and and unloads it but overshot Jones by about 1 yard. Without the insight you would assume MB just didn't throw with enough accuracy but KOC actually talks to Jones as hes coming back to the sideline and is teaching him to just look up once and go as he gets past his man. Explaining that he lost his top end speed by looking back to much (i'm paraphrasing).

Yup, listening to KOC during the plays was the best part about this game. To hear his insight as plays are taking place was really cool.

The way I see it:

1) Lose to the Bears in the first game, and the Vikes will win 8-10 games for the regular season, probably closer to the 8.

2) Beat the Bears in the 1st game, and the Vikings will win 10-13 games for the regular season.

3) A tie with the Bears in the 1st game of the season, and the Vikings will finish with exactly 9 wins, 7 losses and 1 tie for the regular season.

That's some pretty solid math you have going on there. Or is it an algorithm?

Seasons can play out with momentum flows, and I think winning will do a lot for McCarthy's confidence, while a win for the Bears will help Caleb William's confidence with Ben Johnson's system.

I see the opener as a very tough game, with the Bears being underdogs. Ben Johnson has been sort of getting the best of BFLO, with the Lions usually winning, and Caleb Williams showed he can make throws against the Vikings defense if he can have a sliver of time.

This guy is just toying with our collective emotions!

For the past 30 years my emotions for the Vikes have always been "cautiously optimistic".

Speaking of upbeat news, could our number 2 QB be hiding in plain sight. In this article Brosmer is projected as our QB 2 and called the next Brock Purdy.

Who are the 4 greatest Vikings players of all-time?

I think there are 2 no-brainers. Alan Page and Randall McDaniel.

After that, it gets interesting. Knee-jerk reaction is Randy Moss. There's also Cris Carter. Frank Tarkenton would make it on most fans' lists. There's also John Randle, Chris Doleman, Chuck Foreman, Carl Eller, Paul Krause and Jim Marshall. Other than McDaniel, there have also been a handful of other offensive lineman that could be considered.

I believe most people would go Page, Tarkenton, Moss, and leave off the offensive lineman McDaniel in favor of Carter or Randle or Marshall.

And I haven't even mentioned Adrian Peterson. I think he was a little overrated. Great runner. But couldn't run a route or catch the ball and not much of a blocker/protector. Nevermind his personal issues.

There are a lot of options.
