You gotta imagine it's 1 of 2 things:

1. the term is too long (and I don't blame him one bit)
2. after Leo said "July 1st will be like Christmas" and we didn't bring in shit, he's told them to screw off

I agree on 1- I think 3-4 years is about right

For 2 there wasn't anybody available at the time that would help us, there will be and now we have the cap deal

While I agree with you that there wasn't anyone to sign (they all signed with their teams) the things that I've heard/read is that Leo promised him that they would bring in a true #1 center and that didn't happen.

Just seems odd that he said he loved it in MN and everything about it and turns down that kind of offer. It wasn't a low ball offer of any kind. Largest in history. Logic seems to point to point #1 but it's troubling.

So I just listened to a good portion of the Judd Zulgad podcast on Skor North. I don't always agree with their takes but I also don't think it's a pod based on fantasies ect. I think they do a good job of keeping it straight.

One thing that stood out to me as a great point. Apparently Leo said that it wasn't going to be problem the other day at some unveiling (might have been a new arena, I don't recall). Citing that no other team could match the terms. It was then declined and immediately leaked. BG said they didn't leak it so who did? They were guessing that the leak came out so fast it isn't just a matter of term. There was a driving force behind the leak.

Maybe something as simple as wanting to see how the team looks during training camp?

My own hunch. Kaprizov’s agent is just playing hardball. And I don’t blame them. He’s just doing his job. I’d want my agent to do that too. There’s no reason to jump at the first offer, just on principle, no matter what it is. He’s under contract for the year and the Wild will have a ton of cap space starting next year. His agent probably told him “Look, if they’re willing to pay $16 million they’re willing to pay $17 million. Let’s sit tight for a while.”

I think his agent wants to wait until McDavid signs to let him set the bar.

And McDavid and Eichel are waiting for Kaprizov to set the bar.

With McDavid and Eichel playing center and Kaprizov playing wing, they would have loved him accepting a richest contract in history. They could immediately go higher. It won't work the other way for Kaprizov. He is unlikely to get what the other two get. Probably why he wants 4 years, which is fine with me. When the Wild sign players to 7 to 9 year deals, they always regret it.

Yeap, that's my guess too. It's term and I don't blame him. There's nothing in this franchises history that says "trust us for 8 years of your career".

We also haven't had a player who has proven worth that kind of term commitment. Spurgeon's is every bit the albatross that Suter and Parise were.

Might be a good sign:

The Wild hadn’t spoken to Theofanous since last Tuesday, but the veteran agent surprised the team by showing up unannounced at practice on Thursday. Theofanous and assistant GM Mat Sells, the chief contract negotiator for the Wild, met in the stands for nearly two hours during parts of two practices and the entirety of a scrimmage.

The Wild’s hope for the past 10 days has been that at some point, Kaprizov would instruct Theofanous to get a deal done. Perhaps this was the start.

I like KK but lets be honest. Yes, he's the best player this franchise has ever had (better than Gaborik). He's not worth the money he's likely asking for. With the money he's going to push up against the cap, there's no way you can surround him with enough talent to get to a cup.

This is like paying 100 bucks for a glass of water because you've been stuck in the desert. He's not close to the talent that CM'D is and they are both chasing the same number.

At this point I'd offer him the same $16 million a year, but over 4 years. Let him bet on himself and prove he really wants to be here and it lets him go for one more big contract after that....

Just watched my first period of this year against the Hawks, at home. A couple of the regulars didn't play but pretty clear again. We are mostly a full team of lunch pail JAG's.

Dump and chase
swing it around the perimeter
PP is totally flat
PK leaves a guy wide open on the back side

Not a lot to be excited about i'm afraid

Going to be another long season I'm afraid. And to top it off it's looking like KK is going Gaborik on us to top it off.
I keep thinking I should start a 2026 thread but not sure if I really want to.

This just bugs the crap out of me. All camp, we've been hearing how good Carson Lambos has looked. Really looks like like he's ready to make the jump to the NHL. Well yesterday Lambos got sent to Iowa. Who's still with the team? Jack f***ing Johnson. Let's be clear...Johnson really sucks. I take that back. Johnson is really old AND he really sucks. Once again a promising young player is blocked by a retread has been. And Johnson wasn't good before he was a has been.

Billy just gotta have his veterans.

How many years and is there a NMC for Johnson? LOL

Ha. I don’t often nail it, but when I do, I like to brag about it.

Not quite the same. Kaprizov has legit star power (when healthy) Parise and Sutter were solid players but not stars, and signing them for too long and too much doesn’t make them stars.

Anyone who thought those two were the core to a Stanley Cup team was fooling themselves. They are classic first round exit level players. At least by the time they got here.

So much for my hunch that it was all about term (he wanted less years). I would love to know the pitch that they laid out to him where they convinced him he can win a cup in MN.
