Yeah, it's getting a bit scary.

Murray: I'm hearing less talk of "Darnold was off at first too" type chatter. It's becoming more of "he's just struggling".

JJM: 3 years in and most/all of the negative is A. He still overthrows more than he should and B. He doesn't process fast enough so me misses the window

IMO- it's B for JJM that's the most concerning. it's year 3 man.....

Coller on both guys:

Kyler was a C- and JJM was a C. JJM had a Jamies Winston type day

Maybe Murray is feeling the pressure of his next contract. The chatter about Darnold's next contract took on new heights his last few weeks here and we saw what happened.

And is Murray a good fit? Is the O complex? Is he really working at his craft? After all, Arizona briefly put a study clause in his extension:

The Arizona Cardinals placed an addendum into his $230.5 million extension forcing him to log four independent study hours weekly, checking that he wasn't playing video games or browsing the internet.

Expectations are still seeing Murray make some nice plays and some head scratchers, with a heavy dose of him running around with his short but quick strides.

As opposed to JJM taking off on a scramble with his head down, and since he's never met a pass he didn't think he could make, throwing a no accuracy SCUD missile on the fly with both feet off the ground and legs spread like he's in a 100 meter hurdle race.

Mackey:

I DO think there's a world where Kevin O'Connell + Frank Smith bring out the best version of Kyler Murray.

But I also think the backdrop of where Kyler's career is at right now is important context to note.

The Cardinals are paying Kyler 30m+ to go away.

50 NFL executives + coaches (per @SandoNFL) ranked Kyler as a Tier 3 QB (23rd in the NFL), with 9 of those executives ranking him Tier 4.

Among 40 qualified QBs (750+ throws) the last 4 years, Kyler ranks
▪️ 28th in passer rating
▪️ 33rd in Yards Per Attempt
▪️ 38th in average air yards
▪️ 22nd in EPA/play

Kyler came into Minnesota, by all of the above accounts, as a reclamation project.

And two weeks into Vikings camp + a month of spring practices, JJ McCarthy is outplaying Kyler in a significant number of practices.

Right now, it feels like the Vikings are set to plow through all of this information and just... cross their fingers on Kyler flipping a switch in the regular season.

Interesting situation brewing.

Glad JJ has made up a little ground, Murray turning it into a laugher would have been bad for both players.

The TC hype train helps fans, not necessarily players.

Wonder if preseason games will have any impact at all on preparing starters or if it continues to be simply injury protection / 4-5 plays for the starter. Whoever the starter and backup are should get maximum exposure IMO. Even if they are injury prone.

Shame that our sturdiest QB is neither potential starter … its Wentz the meal goat from jurassic park.

The “ injury protection “ gambit of not giving the starting crews on both sides of the ball, SIGNIFICANT work in preseason, has worked ”SO WELL” in the past few seasons..

JFC..

Exactly! All that will happen is the Packers will demolish our team in the opener because only a few 1's will see any playing time before the opener.

You think a guy that blew a shoulder and a knee in his career is more study?

I wouldn't put any faith in that.

It was a very minor point, not that wentz is durable, its that wentz answered the call last year with his guts hanging out, while others were being nursed back to perfect health with double, triple and quadruple signoff by the medical staff.

Is McCarthy closing the gap because he has a stronger work ethic than Murray?

It's probably best to start Murray at the start of the season, then McCarthy takes over about week 8 because of ineffectiveness of Murray, or because of injury.

Starting McCarthy week 1 looks bad for Murray, and if McCarthy bombs, it could mess with the kids confidence.

Forness notes:

Tai Felton & Ivan Pace Jr.: Forness admits he was wrong on Felton: “He deserves a lot of credit for that.” Pace’s improved lateral coverage and multiple PBUs have also turned heads.

Tight End Battle: Gavin Bartholomew has emerged as a top-three Mr. Mankato candidate with explosive seam routes, putting pressure on Ben Yurosek despite Yurosek’s solid camp.

Yep, the sun also rose in the east.

JJM got enough snaps to evaluate whether the switch came on. It didn't. Now KM can get the reps he definitely needs.

All in all, KOC handled the QB competition well. It was the media that created the hoopla.

only "shock" might be that they named him starter before any of the preseason games

Probably the right thing to just make the decision sooner than later so we can give Murray the reps and get him more familiarity with the pass catchers and all.

How long till JJM asks for a trade?

This pretty well says that the Vikings are done with McCarthy. If he had shown any significant progress from last year, they wouldn't have made a decision this fast. KOC probably watched for a week and decided it was the same old JJ. When McCarthy still had problems processing heading into year 3, it didn't bode well.

Yeap, that's the part that has me going

Not enough arm strenght? = ok
Coming back from injuies? = ok
Generally not good at football, athletically? = ok

3 years and you're still learning the offense?

Even though I think he sucks, kinda feel a bit of sympathy for JJM - at this point in time - because he seems like a good kid.

- He lacks fundamentals so won't be the proverbial steady backup, which leaves no on ramp to having a journeyman career.
- He may already have had his shot as the boom/bust youngster.
- With his slow CPU speed, he definitely cannot make it in one of these football sideshow leagues. Thinking Kurt Warner thriving with the AFL's Iowa Barnstormers and NFLE where his quick thinking was what put him on the NFL radar.
- Won't say he is automatically headed to being out of football. He could end up a perennial starter, maybe even in Minny next year. But the odds are slim.

His saving grace may be the usual plethora of coaches who think they can turn a rock into a star, but a lot of things would have to click from the get-go.

If he lasts the year he'll have made about $18M plus about $5M in endorsements/etc so that's a nice consolation prize. After taxes and fees, maybe he clears $10M. Pretty nice start.

Hope to see him in the league for a while though.

Only way to know is give him more preseason reps.....

At least he got to use the John Wooden like zinger, "Where else would you rather be?" in the huddle before his big comeback win in his first game in the NFL

too bad it was pretty much downhill from there

Will Ragatz:

Whether psychological effect or coincidence, Kyler Murray just had easily one of his best practices of camp.

Only one ball hit the ground all day. Several chunk gains through the air to Jefferson, Addison, Felton. Looked very comfortable with decision-making.

This team is cooked. I think this season will be the season that starts the downhill slope for KOC. Don't get me wrong I liked the Murray pickup for insurance reasons.

I just don't see the team doing too good with these two QBs. Both have injury issues. I hope like hell I'm wrong. Never was the biggest fan of the McCarthy pick but was glad we at least tried to get a QB.

I always felt like they tried to hide him in his college offense. Prove me wrong Vikes!
