Right. If you are a good, classic dropback QB, he won't make you better, but he won't make you worse. You just happen to fit into his system as you are.

But if you don't fit that mold, he will unsuccessfully try to force you into it, instead of altering what he does to fit whatever strengths you may have.

Murray is going to be a big test for him. Will he let Kyler by Kyler, or is he going to try to turn him into Kirk?

The point is who bestowed him that title? According to Grok:

Greg Olsen (Fox Sports NFL analyst and former tight end).

Multiple reports credit Olsen with popularizing the “QB whisperer” (or “quarterback whisperer”) label for Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell (KOC). During a December 2024 Fox broadcast, Olsen said something to the effect of: “If you’re starting a franchise and you need a great coach, play-caller, quarterback whisperer, he might be the guy.”

Yahoo Sports notes that this broadcast comment “introduc[ed] an unofficial title that has stuck for many across the league,” especially after O’Connell’s work with quarterbacks like Sam Darnold.
USA Today and other outlets similarly describe Olsen as one of the first high-profile voices to apply the nickname publicly in that way. The label has since been widely used in media coverage of O’Connell’s coaching.


In my book he never was a QB whisperer....hell he helped win a Super Bowl with Stafford (when he was OC). Just further proves Olsen is an idiot.

KOC teams have overachieved in the regular season and he has to prove he can win in the playoffs after getting there.......develop a run game to convert 3rd and short and dominate when needed. Quit the QB whisperer BS.

Status: offline 		Labels aside... KOC is 1-5-2 in developing QBs, but if Darnold is a neutral then KOC's record is 0-5-3.

For this crazy theory, Darnold is more like a fraction, so 0.5-5-2.5

That equates to:

KOC improved: 6%
KOC did shit: 63%
Neutral: 31%

Status: offline 		The only thing I have liked about KOC so far is he is not Zimmer, and he sometimes , ( and it’s actually a far more rare thing than I thought..).. he is not as predictable on playcalling..

His clock management and call challenges are still, after all this time, pathetic.

The fact the his teams have consistently struggled on short yardage conversions into first downs… SSDD..

It wasn’t the team, after consulting their doctors, saying it wasn’t safe for McCarthy to play - he had been cleared to play - it was McCarthy saying he wasn’t comfortable playing and essentially taking himself out of the game plan. That is a key point.

"It was clear from the people I talked to that it was him not being comfortable playing in the game," Goessling continued. "It was not the team saying, 'No, we don't think you're ready to go.' It was him saying, 'I'm not comfortable doing it.'

1. Eagles 50-18 3 qb's
2. Bills 49-18 1 qb
3. Chiefs 46-22 2 qb's

That is a crazy stat in a couple of ways.
Bills/Lions being able to get 4 years and only play 1 qb (for the most part I assume) is wild.
Winning that much with 8 qbs is pretty wild too.

In hindsight... you know who was a pretty damn good qb whisperator?

But apparently Van Noy and Flores were able to mend fences and will work together again in Minnesota. Van Noy also played with Andrew Van Ginkel in Miami.

Van Noy is 35 but has fared well into his 30s, chalking up 14 sacks among 56 quarterback pressures as recently as 2024. He’s also a solid run defender and when dropping in coverage.

Status: offline 		It seemed like the Vikings did a better job near the end of last season at sticking with the run, which paid off with wins.

Before that, was it not sticking with the run that produced bad results, or was it more a poor style of run blocking that they were using ? Will the style of zone run blocking they plan to use this year, be more successful, will it encourage KOC to better stick with the run, or will it be to the detriment of win-loss, or a detriment to the Vikings passing game, or a detriment to BOTH ?

Or will it open up the passing game more ?

Apples and Oranges......Vikings expect a winner just like all the football owners....plus the owners spend.
