Also reported that a trade was in the works sending McCarthy to the Raiders and us signing Darnold long term.

This is what O'Connell wanted to do.

That's outrageous and sounds like scapegoating.

I'm not doubting that you heard that reported somewhere ... maybe there's some truth in it ...

but the timing of that is some Shakespearean betrayal stuff going on right there.

here is a copy and paste of the tweet

Daniel Rotman
@daniel_rotman15
FWIW: there was internal disagreement when drafting J.J. McCarthy and when deciding whether to prioritize him or Sam Darnold this offseason. Kevin O’Connell wanted to go in the other direction. The Vikings were moments away from trading McCarthy to the Raiders this offseason, but to no avail.

Thanks for posting the source. There are other speculative tweeters coming out of the woodwork about this as well.

My thing is the timing … if those speculations are close to true, we should already have a new gm by now, much less putting it off for several months.

Its almost at a point of causing the most internal damage to offseason preparation.

So dysfunctional as an org however it gets spun.

Kwesi fired. I was still surprised, but as was very clearly documented on this site, his drafting record is horrible and has really set back the organization. Also, his free agency signings record was mixed too. I am curious how they will handle the draft and if they really wait to get a new GM after the draft.

oh wow, I see they want to wait until after the draft to make a new hire...

that seems odd, but I guess this is KOC's draft...

wonder how much input there will be from Flores...

and Brzezinski, as apparently he will "run the front office"

This does seem very strange. Has another team ever fired their GM 3 months before the draft and announced they will not replace him before the draft? This seems really stupid. Who knows, maybe Spielman said no.

Shout out to Bill on the Triangle of Authority. Also looks like a schism to me.

Kwesi was hired Jan 26th 2022.

We’ll find out this year whether we have a scouting problem or Kwesi was just bad

I think its the later, but we will soon find out

Never understood where his analytics came in because it seemed like moves he made was anti analytics
Not stockpiling draft picks, building an old roster, etc

Exactly! He used to say it was important to "work the margins" to extract every bit of draft and cap resource. But time and again he pissed away the margins (and more). Recent examples are the picks for Thielen, and some of the recent UFA contracts.

And yes he created one of the oldest rosters in the league, complete with high priced deadwood, and cap problems. He powered the hamster wheel that actually went backwards to 2022. To include needing a QB (unless you were happy with mere regular season stats).

I dont agree with it, but im gonna make a prediction

Aaron Rodgers is the starting QB next year

I think Russini was right all along. Kwesi blocked it im guessing

Well ... since we don't have a big picture guy in place to see the long view / manage the state of the franchise ...

seems like Kevin might go buddying with either Rogers or Cousins.

KAMs contract was to run out after this season i believe?

If this was all well thought out seems weird to me why they didnt just let his contract expire before giving him a new one
It’s not like teams would have been knocking at his door

Did Flores agree to come back if the personnel guy is out? KOC saw it as a chance to bring in his veteran? Kwesi was pushing for JJ
Kwesi also was the guy who was propping up Brosmer who is one of the worst QBs ive witnessed on the pro level
KOC very non committal on JJ
Do they now try to unload JJ for a 3rd rounder?
2027 sets up for a great QB class

I understand why they are waiting. Just pointing out if motivated they could probably hire a new GM in a week.

Guessing JJM could be traded as well. Too much dirty laundry at the moment. Not sure if that can be walked back.

JJM being pushed on KOC for this year would make so many things make more sense. I remember there were several times in the season where I thought to myself "damn, he throws smoke at that kid a lot". We (or at least I) thought JJM was KOC's hand picked guy. To have the "man, he's so tough on him" thoughts seemed really weird. Now, not so much.

Queasy was fired for his series of failed drafts pure and simple. If he had drafted well and not traded picks at a loss, the Vikings have been successful in their efforts to rebuild competitively. Right off the bat, trading down 20 spots without picking up a first in the next draft was borderline criminal.

Darnold was the final straw.

I'm just glad it happened before draft. I'll take a KOC/Brzezinski combo any day of the week over KAM.

My guess is KOC and B-Flo will make the picks and Brzezinski will handle the mechanics of the draft, including any pick swaps. I'm sure he has a better sense of pick value than KAM.

This is actually super promising:

The #Vikings are hiring former #Dolphins OC Frank Smith to be their assistant HC, per @RapSheet.

Smith was voted as the number 1 OC in the NFL during the 2023 season, according to a survey, taken by the players, from the @NFLPA.

Frank Smith will have major role in terms of providing run game ideas/working closely with Kevin O’Connell.

quote:

Very happy to add Frank Smith — an excellent leader who spent the last few years working with Mike McDaniel in Miami, with basically the best run scheme in the league

The Vikings have made several key hires to assistant positions on Kevin O'Connell's coaching staff, according to reports from NFL Network's Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport on Saturday morning.

On the offensive side, former Dolphins offensive coordinator Frank Smith is coming aboard as assistant head coach, a role previously held by Mike Pettine. Smith will help with the entire offense but should specifically provide a boost to the run game, which has been an issue throughout O'Connell's tenure. The Vikings are also promoting assistant offensive line coach Keith Carter to the OL coach position, which was previously help by Chris Kuper.

On the other side of the ball, the Vikings have added former Falcons and Jaguars defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen to Brian Flores' staff as defensive line coach and defensive run game coordinator. Marcus Dixon was previously the DL coach in Minnesota, but he was one of a few assistants whose contract expired. Also, rising Steelers assistant Gerald Alexander has been hired as defensive backs coach and defensive pass game coordinator. Both of those titles were held by Daronte Jones, who was hired as the Commanders' DC recently.

Re: Keith Carter. Promoting from within for the O-Line seems a bit...short sighted, but I'd expect Frank Smith to be very hands on with the Oline.

He was Ben Roethlisberger's starting center in college before jumping into coaching.

Started his career as the Saints' Assistant OL coach from 2010-14. He then had a couple stints as a TE coach before becoming the Chargers' Run Game Coordinator AND OL Coach for 2021. And then he spent the remaining years working as OC for the Dolphins until now. Looks like he coached 6 Pro Bowlers and 1 All Pro in his time as an OL coach. So it looks like he might have the needed chops.

Promoting Kuper's lacky is an uninspiring hire to say the least.

I have explained why I favor Seattle winning the Super Bowl, maybe they aren't the best reasons, and I could still change my mind on it.

How would you feel, or what would your reaction be if the game were really close, and NE wins the Super Bowl with a walk off TD to Diggs ?

A little while after I posted about the possibility of NE winning with walk off TD, I ran into someone that believes NE will win the Super Bowl.

His angle was along conspiratorial lines, he gave some examples from the past, and then stated NE will win the SB: red, white and blue, in support of MAGA, MAGA might be in need of more support at this time.

Pretty much what I've been saying all year. McCarthy was Kwesi's guy and O'Connell wanted Darnold back. It ain't easy to win 14 games with a shitty o-line.

O'Connell will get a one-year reprieve before the heat turns back to him. He showed no ability to adapt the game plan the final two games of the 2024 season when everyone in the league knew the offensive line was a disaster. He has done some nice things since arriving, but hasn't shown much growth as a head coach. He rode the quarterback whisperer thing as far as it is going to go. Now he has to go and be a real coach.

They are both deep and well coached teams with good defenses and running game.....why is a conspiracy needed?

I don't think it was that B and W.

I think Rodgers was also in play until the end......KOC's guy was Daniel Jones but that wouldn't fit your narrative.

WE can agree on something it seems. Darnold wasn't really KOCs guy. They offered him a cursory contract to say they tried. the one they REALLY tried to get back was Jones. They wanted the mobility of Jones. But he took less money to go elsewhere. Rodgers was really never an option IMHO. But maybe he will be this year....who knows.
