The Twins will tender Jeffers right after the season. That will guarantee them a compensatory pick after the first round. They rolled the dice on a playoff run and came up snake eyes.

I was glad they made a modest effort at trade deadline, considering the status of the American League wild card race this year. But they’re crashing and burning. Preseason over under was 70 something wins. They’re turning out to be exactly who we thought they were.

Major league rosters expand to 28 tomorrow.

I'd expect the Minnesota Twins to add a bat and pitcher.

Emmanuel Rodriguez makes sense on the hitting front. He's already on the 40 man roster, and out of options next year.

Kendry Rojas would be a good pitching addition.

The
@StPaulSaints
would hate that being they are chasing down a playoff spot.

On this day in 1987 Kirby Puckett goes 6 for 6 with two HRs, two doubles, two singles & robs Robin Yount of a grand slam in a 10-6 Twins win. It’s one of the greatest performances in baseball history.

Twins To Select Ben Ross

The Twins are planning to select the contract of infielder Ben Ross when roster expand tomorrow, reports Bobby Nightengale of the Minnesota Star-Tribune. Minnesota also appears set to recall righty Garrett Acton to take a spot in the bullpen. He has a locker set up in the clubhouse. The Twins will need to open a 40-man spot for Ross.

Ross, 25, ranks 13th in the Twins’ system at MLB.com. He’s 22nd at Baseball America and 29th at FanGraphs. A product of Ohio’s Notre Dame College (not to be confused with the University of Notre Dame), Ross is a former fifth-rounder who has had a nice season between Double-A Wichita and Triple-A St. Paul. In a combined 490 plate appearances, he’s batted .274/.378/.506 with 20 homers, 20 steals (28 attempts), 30 doubles, three triples, a 13.9% walk rate and a 25.3% strikeout rate.

Absolutely there is hope! We own the tiebreaker over all teams in the hunt for the 3rd wildcard. I believe 82-80 will be enough to tie for that spot. So we have to go 16-8 over the final 24 games. If we play well, it is doable.

Serious question. What do you long-time fans thing of the wild card policy? Specifically from the perspective of a contending team... a three game series which ends up who knows what, and if you get by that your pitching is diminished for the next series.

Obviously I'm asking from the Dodgers perspective, and they have lost such a short series before. Not too worried as they have an easy schedule in Sept so if they lose out they deserve it. That's how I roll.

Guess it's akin to the NFL with byes and HFA. And major sports have top seeds playing low seeds.

Seems as if it is a way to add in more playoff teams (i.e. $$) to the detriment of teams who have excelled over 162 games. It's the 162 game season boiling down to three games that seems disingenuous or out of whack.

Too many playoff teams and too short series. I agree. I could do without the opening best of 3s.
