I watched that NFCCG a few times.  Favre took his fair share of late hits.  Favre however came out and stated it was just football, and that was after the game.  No, maybe we didn't retaliate, but maybe the guys didn't want to win that way?  If the Vikings get even one or two of those non-calls it could have changed the outcome of the game...maybe even ONE 15 yard penalty could have changed things.  To say that the Saints weren't running a dirty program though is a little disengenuous in my opinion.  Thier DC was banned from the NFL and the HC was made to sit out an entire season.  Bountygate DID happen...lets not try and say it didn't and it culminated in that NFCCG.  Yes, the Vikes had their own chances to win that game....but the Saints were a dirty team and all one has to do is go back and watch the game to see the proof.

So tell me how the Saints play

1. Helped them win the game
2. Prevented the Vikings from standing up for themselves

That makes 0 sense. They are grown ass men and if they thought someone was dirty they would have done something about it.

I haven't heard any players of coaches ever state that as a reason they lost the game

For some reason it appeared our team was unaware of what the Saints were doing.

I cannot fathom why they would not have retaliated had they realized what was happening.

I know it sounds dumb but they simply did not seem to know.

The real unforgivable sin was they did not retaliate in the game opening the following season, after an entire offseason to stew. I suspect KA was behind that. No soul.

I hadn't even given that a second thought. Good point.

Then and there like men or not at all.

The real sin is missing all that crap. How could they not be watching? How could talk not circulate throughout the team? This was their leader that inspired a SB run.

That I'll never get.

What happens if we would of kicked some ass back? They don't get called for their shenanigans but when one of our tough guys whacks one of theres back he gets 15 yards, ends the drive in a game that goes into OT and what are everyone of you saying sitting on your couch?

That stupid MF! What a ****in' idiot! That's what you're saying ....

the coaching game day awareness has been horrific for years around here...

poor judgments on challenge flags

poor clock management

weird personnel packages

another example this year was on that fake field goal attempt where the dude was completely uncovered

any coach watching the game could have seen it, but they were too busy ordering a hotdog and saving their favorite chair for the film study room

That's why we should have taken Brees out in the first game of the following year, ending his season.

Want to make some money, just bet the opposite of these predictions. I may change my mind, but my initial impression (which last week was 1-3, the only correct one taking a 28 point comeback) this week is:

A rested Seattle will beat NO by more than 7 1/2.

Indianapolis will not only cover the 7, but will upset NE.

SF will outlast Carolina, and win by a FG.

Denver will beat SD by exactly 10.

Rapt, I think you're correct if Carolina can by SF. The winner of that game wins it all. I think those 2 teams might have better balance and chemistry than any of the rest.

I'm starting to waver on picking the Colts, they probably don't have enough defense to beat NE.

The big boys are playing this week, but I think SF is one of them, and am staying with them beating Carolina by a FG.

I'm keeping my picks with the points the same, still picking Seattle, Indy, SF and Denver to all cover, but I now think NE will edge Indy.

My final answer is the prediction made closest to game time.

They didn't know the Saints had a couple extra bucks riding on it. They of course knew they were trying to knock their QB out of the game, because teams have been doing that for decades, with or without a few extra dollars riding on it. That's football, and there's really nothing 'dirty' about it. If you can knock Michael Jordan down with a clothesline, hit Derek Jeter with a fastball to the noggin, or high check Mike Messier, you do it.

It's the money that made it dirty. If they had captured the Saints on the sidelines saying they were going to knock Favre out, sans money pool.... it would have been Lawrence Taylor, Richard Dent, Charles Haley, etc. IOW nothing that hasn't happened on the field many times before.

Funny how money can do that..

Two consenting adults have have wild sex all night long and no crime is committed.

One of them gets paid for it and suddenly it's a crime.

Same thing here.  It's not dirty trying to injure another player?  I disagree...
These guys entire lives are dependent on playing that game.  To intentionally try to injure a guy, possibly costing that guy his career and a lot of money down the road...that's just wrong.  Whether money changes hands as a result is inconsequential imho.  All the Bouty program did was encourage the bad behavior by rewarding it.

The team was coached by Brad Childress, they were stupid punks.  No need to add the "or".

Saints trying to take players out of the game had little to do with the Vikings losing.  Turnovers, bad officiating, stupid penalites...had a lot more to do with.

Not sure why my post is nonsense. I agree with you. In just about every game of football, one team wants it more, is more physical, and in the end kicks the other team's ass. I agree with you, in this game the Saints, like hundreds if not thousands of teams before them, went into it trying to knock the opposing QB out of the game. Maybe there are a couple games where there isn't a single player, or a play where one guy tries to inflict some extra pain and punishment, but those are few and far between. And the Vikings didn't respond to their level. The Vikings simply didn't fight back. The money is the only reason it ended up being a thing. And you're also right, and I agree, that motivation to go to the Super Bowl is much, much larger than a few c notes.

As for it being dirty or not, football is inherently a dirty game. Every time guys tackle each other, they try to do so with enough force to knock the ball loose, to inflict pain, to make the guy know he's in a war.

My lock of the week is SF +1.

While I think if they win, it will be by a FG, and not more than a FG, I think that is the most likely outcome, just like I was thinking with SF/GB last week.

I saw Andrew Luck take a harder and later shot than Favre did in the first half, and there was no call. Were the Colts screwed by the refs, or did the Patriots cheat?

The Saints were wrong to have a little side pool (like plenty of other players, including Vikings did) but in terms of on the field outcome, I don't think it played any role. They could have/would have hit Favre the exact same way with our without some extra cash riding on it.
