I think the Steelers will be stronger than folks think. I can't imagine Tomlin letting them stay down another year.

Also, the Ravens may be depleted somewhat from last year but Flacco will have the confidence to win games. Plus I am not buying the losing Ray Lewis is so critical. He was not a stud LB last year

As for the Vikings valuing character, I wouldn't go that far. Hernandez shows us we really don't know these guys like we think we do.

Look at who Baltimore signed for their defense and try to tell me they won't be just as good.....

Value character? Wow. Good thing our franchise is saintly. Silly.

Are you saying valuing character is silly? If so, that says more about you than it does the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Bengals constantly draft low character guys, then marvel why the team doesn't perform consistently.

They will slide back down. It's the Bengal way.

Hernandez wasn't a surprise. A lot of people said he was 1st round talent. But his character brought him back. The pats knew what they were getting.

We took a similar flyer on Griffin, but we got lucky and it seems to be working out.

IMO; The Bengals are a different case. They draft a ton of those questionable guys without even having established leaders already on the squad.

I think they go 11-6. It's only a one game improvement, but the main reason it won't be more is because it's a very good division. It will be enough to get into the playoffs, but not enough for a bye.

put the hooka aside....

Pffft. It's the 21st century, man. Vaporizing is where it's at.

Into my 3rd week of quitting smoking because of the electronic cigarette - vaporizer. Love the thing.

Awesome man!

No one would call Chris Cook a high character person

Gays probably would not say Peterson is either

You can't possibly believe this.

Otherwise scouting reports could just replace the "Character" category with arrest record.

Side bar: I read in ESPN Magazine that they once found Lawrence Taylor face down in his hotel room at 10AM!!!?!?!?!?!! on a noon gameday with multiple half (and fully) naked women laying around nearby amongst a few empty tequila bottles. It said they woke him up, drove him to the stadium, got him dressed and out on the field. The actual quote from the person reporting this was - "The motherf***er had two sacks that game."

Your body can do a lot of stuff when you are in your 20s whether your LT or some other drunk. Good story, though.

I had that exact thing happen to me...

Minus the sacks....

....and the stadium...

....and the women...

The tequila bottles were definitely present, though

That's funny

In the Raiders heyday you could have a coach like Madden with three rules.  Be on time.  Pay attention when coaches are talking.  Play to win on Sunday.  Even into the 80s.  But now?  There is no offseason and everyone has a camera with a photolab and mass publishing.

Rooting for Audie Cole and Joe Webb.  I think they add good intangibles and with Joe especially versatility to the team.

laughed so hard at this, thanks doc!

I had to narrate it to my wife, she didn't enjoy it quite as much, though...

as far as character is concerned...whatever...

sure it is easier to root for a good guy, but how do you gauge character for public figures other than police record?

and that still means squat

there are tons of guys with a clean record that are total assholes...but we root like hell for them when they are on our team

there are tons of guys with a record that are actually good guys...but we root like hell for them when they are on our team

there are many guys with a record that are assholes...and we still root like hell for them when they are on our team

there are a few random guys that have clean records and are freakin' saints....and they are completely forgotten unless they are great on the field

i agree character is important, but talent is more so

that said, i think this team has pretty decent character and decent talent, too...

we could go far with a derelict like Tommy Kramer right now...

I hope I'm wrong, but my football prognostication senses are telling me it's going to be a very rough year for the Vikes due to the following:

- One or more key injuries
- Ponder not making enough (or any) progress, and no longer the starter by end of the season
- Final record 7-9 in a largely wasted year - well out of the playoffs, but not bad enough to pick up any high impact-level draft choices.
