Well the NCAA settled on uping it to 68 instead of 96. I guess they will have 4 play in games for the 4 #1 seeds to face

That is just so stupid. It makes a mockery of the tournament.

I'm fine with it.. IF they use those games for the bubble teams.

MUCH better than the alternative of 96 teams.

West Virginia coach Bob Huggins was hospitalized with four broken ribs Friday after an accidental fall at a hotel in Las Vegas during a recruiting trip.
Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy, a former assistant of Huggins' at Cincinnati, confirmed via text message to ESPN.com that Huggins would be fine, and that the incident was not related to any heart problem.
Huggins suffered a heart attack in 2002.
Huggins was expected to be flown back to Morgantown, W.Va. on Saturday.

Why does this guy's life continue to feel like a story that will not end well?

The incident wasn't heart related, but what do you want to bet (not really, this time) that it was alcohol related?

Exactly what I was getting at, Pete ...
He's been a mess.
They throw in the heart attack info like it's relevant here.
The guy does everything in excess, and he has aged about 40 years in the last 10.

Anyone else pumped about the season? I can't wait.

Obviously Duke's going to be very, very tough to beat, but anything can happen in the tournament. ACC will be a bit down this year, but UNC will be back in a big way with Barnes IMO.

Big10 should be a very, very good conference top to bottom. MN should be fun to watch. And hopefully IU will start to get it together.

Going to be yet another really fun year.

Yeap.  I hope Tubby and the boys stun the B10.  I'll be curious to see the development of Sampson and Iverson.  IMHO Iverson has been way better than Sampson but it SHOULD be the other way around.  I get a strong feeling that Sampson is lazy and soft.

Saw a bit of the ESPNU "All Access" series with Duke this morning.

Fascinating. It's awesome to watch Coach K behind the scenes and the little things that he preaches.

I'd agree with that, Jeff.

Should be fun to watch.

Quinn Cook, baby!

Duke is shaping up to be every bit as scary next year too. They've practically got a brand new awesome starting 5 already.

Cook/Rivers (#1 player in the class)/Gbinije/Plumlee

And that's one hell of a collection of guards in the last few years at Duke. It's quickly becoming "the" guard university.

Scheyer/Henderson/Irving/Curry/Dawkins/Smith/Rivers/Cook/Gbinije

HUGE hit for Kentucky today with the Kanter ruling.

They're out of title contention IMO.

Big win for Indiana getting Zeller. I want that program to be good again. Would be good for the sport.

This is a great take, IMO, on the Kanter situation, from Jay Bilas:

The Ruling
Based upon the NCAA's definition of the amateurism ideal and the "model" of college sports, this ruling was justified and expected. But, based upon the NCAA's outdated view of amateurism, the ruling shows the organization to be out of touch with today's game and with its own mission.

The NCAA's mission is one of education and this ruling is contrary to that mission. It is accepted that Kanter could have stayed in his home country of Turkey and made hundreds of thousands of dollars as a professional. Instead, Kanter chose to come to the United States to attend college, pursue an education at Kentucky and prepare himself for an NBA career.

The system of education and sport overseas is very different from the system in this country. Kanter has not demonstrated intent to be a professional. To the contrary, he has demonstrated that he has turned down the pros in order to be a full-time student and play as a collegiate athlete. By ruling Kanter ineligible, the NCAA is effectively standing in the way of Kanter pursuing and finishing a college education.

If Kanter were allowed to play, he would be in an educational environment for at least one year, and would be more likely to come back and complete his college education even if he were to leave school after the spring semester to enter the NBA. Kentucky would also have a vested interest in encouraging Kanter to return to school to finish his education. With this ruling, Kanter is unlikely to stay in school and even more unlikely to return to finish school. That hardly advances the educational mission of the NCAA.

Who is served by disallowing Kanter to play? Are we so concerned that European pros will turn down millions to come to college and pursue an education that we need to exclude them? How is the cause of education furthered by excluding a qualified student who has traveled to this country to go to college and play, while turning down the opportunity to earn hundreds of thousands of dollars?

Does anyone believe former Duke star Trajan Langdon did not receive an education, and did not love the game? Well, while Langdon was in college, he earned hundreds of thousands of dollars playing professional baseball in the minor leagues, yet he still suited up for the Blue Devils as an amateur basketball player.

Money does not corrupt education or the educational mission. This ruling is based upon a principle that ignores the reality that other countries have different systems than ours. And it hurts the very person the NCAA's mission should protect and value -- the willing student-athlete.

When I saw that Pepperdine was playing I was wondering if you noticed also. I see they got the young Mike Tompson. It was to late for me to stay up, what kind of player is he? Can he follow his dad into the NBA?

Not sure he'll make it in the NBA or not. He's much smaller than his dad. SF. He's "smooth" I'd say. Pretty decent shot and can do a lot of things well. But not really dynamic. One of his brothers, Klay, at Washington State, is actually better than him. And stands a decent shot at being a pro.

Keion Bell, in the video above, probably has the best NBA chance on the team. But he's really a 2g who's tiny. Not a PG, which they're trying to make him now. Great, great athleticism, obviously, but probably will never hack it in the NBA due to his size/skillset combo.

Very disappointed in the program right now; we used to be a pretty solid mid-major, competing every year with Gonzaga for the crown. Not anymore. And the conference is only getting better, especially with BYU being added. WCC should have 3 teams in the NCAA tourney most years now, and has an argument for the best mid-major conference in basketball now. Never should have let Vance Wahlberg go. He would have built the program into a top-25 program IMO, and has immense respect in both the college and NBA games. Frustrating.

Yep. Were up by 8 close to halftime, then UCLA 10-0 run. Then it only got worse from there.

Our big men are TERRIBLE. And UCLA has a 300 lb (out of shape, but 300 lbs) center. Pretty disheartening to lose to UCLA at this point. That program is in shambles too. And I hate them!

Coach K's right; Kyrie Irving really does play like Chris Paul.

I'd never put that kind of an expectation on an 18 year old to reach that level. But he does have that kind of talent IMO.

Kid's unreal.

DJ as much as I enjoy mocking hating Kentucky basketball I agree with this post of yours 99%. That means 1% of me thinks he should be ruled ineligible 99% of me thinks he should have been allowed to play. Great post.

Why has there not been a post on the Gophers beating #8 ranked Harrison Barnes, I mean UNC. I could not resist this opportunity to make fun of Harrison who went a terrific 0-12 against or for the Gophers. Just maybe he is not a lock to go #1 in the draft and be an NBA all star. Not hating just questioning.

He had a horrible shooting game 3 GAMES INTO HIS COLLEGE career.

Changing how he's ranked/considered as a player due to that would be akin to judging talent based on YouTube highlight packages.

Exactly.

Barnes had an off-game. But he's going to be very, very good. And he's a virtual lock to be the #1 pick. (unless Irving keeps playing like this )

I'd kill to have either one of them.
