I am not too concerned at this point.

1. Gaborik was not coming back here under any circumstances. He simply didn't want to be here.

2. Even if he did, no way do I pay $7.2 million a year to keep him.

3. Fletcher has maintained that the better opportunity to add impact players would be via the trade market. Several teams have to unload good players before camps open to get under the salary cap.

I think the process is far from over.

I like the Zanon signing. He is a guy that isn't afraid to give up his body to block shots

I think Zanon was added for the purpose of making it easier for the defensemen like Burns to their thing. He is like Schultz a defensive minded defenseman who is also a good skater.

I'm sure it disappoints many that this likely means the end of Martin Skoula.

I've calmed down after lastnight (I was livid then) and analyzed it a bit better today.  They, in themselves, aren't bad pickups but we still need more.  A lot hinges on whether or not Havlat can stay healthy.  Also, if they pick up Saku it better be for a decent contract (from our standpoint).

I would also be thrilled if they could free up some money by purging any of the following:

PMB
MAB
Zidlisdsky
Boogard
Belanger (odd man out now)

Well said Jeff
I'm in the same boat
Still time for some great moves
As Tim says, the opportunity of what we can doo with trades is still exciting.
Two good pickups yesterday, just not earth-shakers like we were hoping for.
Gabby left years ago, imo.

On the trade front, what do we have to give? I would be surprised if Harding netted much more than a 2nd-rounder, barring some team getting desperate because of injuries next year. Shepp/Cuma could net something, but I'm not sure if Fletcher wants to go there, given the dearth of young talent (should that be in quotation marks?) that already exists. It just seems to me that Fletcher is severely hamstrung by the years of farm system misuse by DR.

Harding, Shep, Gilles and a few others could yield players. Remember the rationale behind Flethcer's belief that trades are available is that teams need to trade more expensive veterans for less expensive young players.

Good purge list JJ.

Watching the Pens in the playoffs this year, Fedotenko reminded me of Belanger; nice skater, will make a few good moves here and there, but rarely finishes a play well, and often disappears...

The Florida Panthers made sure they didn't lose Jay Bouwmeester for nothing.
They signed Jordan Leopold to a one-year, $1.75 million contract on Thursday, locking up the player they received from Calgary in exchange for Bouwmeester's rights.

Good, he's signed, now we don't have to worry about that when we trade for Leo!

Just to switch it up a bit here.  Nothing else going on.

To my buddy Fargo.  You warned of the heat down here but I have to tell you.  I much prefer this over Northern VA.  Sure the actual temp is much higher (it's been 95+ everyday) but with the low humidity it feels better out there.  VA was just too damned humid.  You sweat as soon as you left the house.  Here you bake but don't immediately sweat.  I much prefer that.   Now, mow the lawn now at 104 or in the morning at 98 ????

No doubt.  We didn't get Scaderi so why not?  Perfect compliment to our core and the fans would go apeshit.  He would be a huge jersey seller at the X.  Local boy revives the Gophs and lands with the home team .  That would leave us with something like:

Burns - Leo

Johnson - Schultz

Zidlidsky - Zanon

Cuma/Reitz - healthy Foster

You can literally have one offensive puck moving guy paired with a stay at homer.   Obviously if it's Reitz the puck mover goes out the window but how much ice time, realistically would that pair get?  5-8 minutes a game maybe.

Throw in that with a projected front lineup of something like:

PMB-Mikko-Mittens
Bruno-Sako-Nolan
Pouls-Brodzia-Clutter
Gillies-Shep-Weller/Boogard/callup(s)

This assumes, of course, that Bellanger is moved and we sign SK.  That gives us 2 decent scoring lines with a pretty hit happy, aggressive 3 line.  The 4th leaves a lot to be desired but what can we do at this point?

If Backs has another solid year I can actually see that lineup making the playoffs

Good stuff Jeff

Much better lineup.
Its nice to know (barring injury) we'll have a solid goalie for years.
Lets you concentrate on other things.
Also agree on Saku... give him what he wants. (and I am like you, not a huge believer he will be awesome here, but solid)
Also have to think about what Mikko wants, he is now, imo, the real bell-cow up front, no more gabby to worry about.
Give Mikko the C and let him make it his team. (up front)
Give Burns the A and turn him loose back there. As you say, a really good mix of offensive/defensive defenders. Perfect pairings.

The options are endless when you start talking about who to start working on "getting back here"
I'm not just talking about ex-Gophs, I think we'd have ins on the Oshies and Parises, and the Martins. Not to mention the Vaneks and Wheelers and the Kessels. The Ballards and the Cullens. I'm not advocating solely employing local kids, but every guy I think of is a solid piece that could add great stuff for us.
Slowly stock the roster with guys who have learned the NHL way on other clubs, and would come back here happy and hungry.

I'm glad you injoy it. In Virginia was it humid like that everyday? I know it gets humid here, but it isn't a daily thing so it is much better for me then that dry heat in Calif

That humidity thing was my experience when I lived in St. Louis too. It was relentless and completely miserable - from April until October. Now that I've been back in Minnesota for a number of years, when I hear people complain about the occasional humidity I just chuckle.

Now, if we can get Iginla to think about playing water polo or something instead of hockey we are golden.

Not too bad Fargo.  We stayed at a buddy's yesterday and he has a pool.  That helps a lot.
