MONTREAL -- Bob Gainey is resigning as the general manager of the Montreal Canadiens, according to media reports circulating from several Canadian media outlets. The team has called a 4 p.m. ET news conference for what it calls "an important announcement regarding the Club's management." ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun confirmed that announcement is Gainey's resignation. Pierre Gauthier will take over for Gainey. Gauthier is a former GM of the Ottawa Senators and Anaheim Ducks. He's been the Canadiens' assistant GM since 2006. A team source told LeBrun that Gauthier will be named the team's permanent GM and won't be saddled with an interim tag. Montreal is currently sixth in the Eastern Conference, eight points out of fifth place, but only three points ahead of No. 8 Philadelphia
