I think it's pretty obvious now that CL wanted both JL and DR gone but went about it 2 totally different ways.  He s-canned DR and let JL walk out on his own.  Pretty solid move IMO.  JL has a lot of admirers.  DR....not so many.

What a bizarre situation in Chicago.  They fire their GM and I've been looking in to it.  They are pretty well screwed.  Kane and Toews will be FA's next year and they are already 4 mill over the cap for this year.  On top of that, they have FA's they need to sign.  If they are over the cap this year it's going to cause major problems for getting those guys signed next year.

No way they can trade their 2 biggest abitros contracts in Huet and Campbell (not even DR is that stupid....well???).  They also have guys on their 3rd and 4th lines making 1st and 2nd line money.    What a disaster.

As we get closer to training camp some lucky GM is going to get a steal on a pretty good player.  I don't see how Chi can get out of this mess without losing an asset on pennies to the dollar.  It'll be interesting.

And Fletcher probably had Chicago in mind when he was talking about teams that will be forced to make trades before the cap deadline.

Can't wait for this.  It's only about 3 miles from my house.  It's only the minors but still really cool.  They are going to be called the Allen Americans

Texas, well.    They aren't really all that good at coming up with nicknames and mascots.

I'm starting to feel bad for the Hawks.  It's been a mess of an offseason for them.  Now the league is looking in to whether or not the circumvented the CBA by signing Hossa to a deal that they know he won't be around to see the end of.  It's a possible 5 mill cap hit and draft picks.  The league is trying to determine if they actually spoke about the possibility of him retiring before the contract runs out thus allowing Chi to get rid of his deal.

Sources tell TSN that Dany Heatley has been traded to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for Milan Michalek, Jonathan Cheechoo and a second round pick.

I think so too. They did very well for themselves after Heatley put the Sens behind the 8-ball in trade talks.
Michalek is a very good, skilled player.  Injury prone as a kid but put that behind him it seems.
Cheechoo is not the best skater and has not played well lately in the 'new' NHL, see if he can turn it back around in Ottawa.

ny paper:

As for that $37.5 million playmaker, Gaborik's reputation for fragility certainly won't lessen after he stayed off the ice for Day1 of camp. The skating Gaborik has been doing at the training center for a couple weeks left him too sore to skate Saturday, and the Rangers plan to take no risks with an oft-injured winger who played in just 17 games last season.

"We just don't want to do anything stupid here with him," Tortorella said. "We want to be sure he's ready when the regular season starts."

Maybe he is lazy. Instead of skating hard 2 weeks before camp starts to get ready for
it he should be skating regularly all off season, perhaps he is but just trying to read
between the lines. No idea if he is or isn't but ....c'mon try something different for
groin maintenance during the summer Gabs....the NASCAR simulator of his certainly
isn't doing the trick.

Can't blame Morency ... thats how you make a roster and get a rep as a great teammate.
Phaneuf's a jackass. It's pre-season, Dion.
Too bad he runs after he hits.

Yeap but honestly....It was a clean hit.  Totally unnecessary but it's Phaneuf.  Okposo needs to learn to keep his head up until it's verified that Phan is at the hotel, room locked and in REM.  If not, there's a good chance he'll cheap shot ya..

Gretzky out, Tippett in for the Coyotes.
Its a mess there.
Gretz tried damn hard to make it work, but that whole situation is close to imploding.
Lawsuits, investigations, poor play, and bankruptcy.

They need to just move and start over.  If the great one can't turn it around who can???  Tippett?  Yeah, that's striking fear in to teams

Well a lot of guys not named Gretzky have won Stanley Cups for years. I don't know anything about Tippett - but maybe there's someone out there...

Is Russo losing his mind?  He's usually pretty reliable and accurate but his Strib article today is about how the Wings have competition in the Central this year.  While I kind of agree with that the picture for the headline article is Gaborik  in a Rags jersey

Russo doesn't have any control over the headlines or the pictures used.
