I didn't have a problem with Asham's post fight celebration.

For the context that it is, I.E., that fighting in hockey gets you this teeny tiny slap on the wrist compared to other sports, I don't see the problem with what Asham did.

I'm surprised he dogged himself so much for it.

Yep.
Heat of the moment.
I do like, tho, how those known for fighting take "doing it the right way" very seriously.
I agreed with every word Barry said (and usually always do).
Kid had a shield on anyway. That used to be a bigger no-no than celebrating the beat-down of a non-fighter.

Is Bettmann on crack?
ONE game tonight in the NHL.
One. The scheduling the last couple years has been strange, to say the least.

Best thing to happen to hockey since Melrose  ..... Simmons is on board.
Suh-weet.
Seriously. We need more of this. Take over the market of people looking for somethign to watch while the NBA crybabies sit around.

2 old Gophs in the top-5

Editor's note: These rankings are based on player production in terms of Hockey Prospectus' GVT valuation metric. If you are unfamiliar with GVT and how it works, you can find more here.

The 2011-12 season is under way, and Hockey Prospectus is back to monitor the Hart Trophy race. Periodically throughout the season, Prospectus will provide updated Player Power Rankings for the top-10 skaters and top-five goalies in the NHL based on HP's proprietary value metric, GVT, which includes offensive, defensive and shootout components.

While the season is still young, Phil Kessel is off to a stunning start, giving Toronto fans a lot to love after the much-derided trade that brought him in from Boston. Just one line lower on the early list is another name all too familiar for Leafs fans.

Player Power Rankings: Skaters
These rankings are through Nov. 13. Total GVT may not equal sum of sub categories due to factors not shown. For more detail, click here.

Rank
Player
Team
Pos.
Off./Goalie GVT
Def. GVT
Shootout GVT
Total GVT

1
Phil Kessel
Toronto Maple Leafs
F
6.2
1.5
0.2
7.9

Kessel's hot start has kept him atop the league in goals and points, and he's maintained a point-per-game pace since his scorching first five games.

2
Tyler Seguin
Boston Bruins
F
5.9
1.3
0.5
7.7

Seguin leads the league at plus-14, and he's helped himself. Boston has outshot its opponents nearly 2-to-1 while Seguin has been on the ice and outscored them 17-3.

3
Marian Hossa
Chicago Blackhawks
F
4.9
1.5
0.0
6.4

As usual, Hossa ranks among the most complete players in the NHL, with 3:31 of PP ice time and 1:52 of PK ice time per game. His total ice time of 20:18 is 21st among NHL forwards.

4
Patrick Kane
Chicago Blackhawks
F
4.5
1.3
0.5
6.2

Kane remains his team's go-to scorer and ranks sixth in the NHL in shots with 61. Expect another 30-goal season.

5
Joffrey Lupul
Toronto Maple Leafs
F
4.0
1.3
0.5
5.8

Lopul has benefited from some easy ice time (3:37 per game on the PP vs. just 0.6 seconds per game on the PK), but he's made the best of it. Last season, he posted 18 points in 28 games in Toronto. He's already exceeded this (19 points) in 17 games.

6
Thomas Vanek
Buffalo Sabres
F
4.6
0.2
0.5
5.3

Vanek is not typically thought of as one of the league's superstar scorers, but his 215 goals since the lockout are seventh among all players.

7
Claude Giroux
Philadelphia Flyers
F
4.5
1.0
-0.2
5.3

Giroux is among the top 10 scorers in the league, but only he, Anze Kopitar and Jason Pominville have managed to do so while playing an important defensive role for their team as well.

8
Johan Franzen
Detroit Red Wings
F
4.0
1.3
0.0
5.3

Franzen has been good for Detroit, but he needs to watch the penalties, which have been too high for a skilled player who doesn't draw many himself.

9
Daniel Sedin
Vancouver Canucks
F
4.5
0.8
0.0
5.2

Only three players in the past 30 years have managed back-to-back scoring titles: Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr. Just saying ...

10
Milan Michalek
Ottawa Senators
F
3.5
0.6
1.2
5.2

Michalek, Jason Spezza and Erik Karlsson have been doing the heavy lifting for an otherwise mediocre Senators team, getting all the difficult matchups.

old Kevin Dineen Story (former player, now current Florida Panthers head coach)
------------------

Kevin’s playing an exhibition game for the Whalers against Buffalo, and a young kid, a rookie, lines up next to him and says, "Mr. Dineen, I’m really trying to make this team. Would you do me the honour of a fight? I want to get John Muckler to notice me." (Muckler was the Sabres Coach at the time)

Dineen replies, "Sure, kid, no problem. But let’s have some fun. How about we only throw lefts?"

"That’s great," says the kid. "I’m fine with that. Thanks for doing this for me."

"No problem, son."

The puck drops, they snap mitts, and Dineen lights him up like a Roman candle in a lopsided beat-down. After they both serve five and skate back to their benches, Coach Muckler greets the kid with, "You know Dineen’s a lefty, don’t you?"

After the news broke this morning that analyst Matthew Barnaby had been arrested for a DWI in Clarence, N.Y., an ESPN spokesman informed us that Bristol was "looking into the situation." We just received word that Barnaby's been fired. From ESPN': "We spoke with Matthew and informed him that we terminated his contract, effective immediately."

Barnaby was pulled over on the Dana Marie Parkway just after 3 a.m. this morning while attempting to operate a Porsche Cayenne that only had three wheels. The arrest came just seven months after he faced five criminal charges in a domestic dispute case with his ex-wife.

Broad Street Bullies getting bitch slapped by the league. Ooooopppps. Slight typo there. I meant "Crosby and his band of dingle berries protected by the league".

SUCH a sweet Phlyer comeback tonight  .... Pens thought they had 'em.    NOPE!
Soooo sweet.

(you've got me fully converted, Jeff)
My hatred for the Pens is reaching Canuckle-head level.

Eastern Conference

Rangers - Senators
NY has been the best team in hockey for a long period of time this season, imo.
I don't see that changing for at least a round or two.
Rangers in 5

Bruins - Capitals
My upset special.
Why? Because this is the year everyone is OFF the Washington bandwagon.
Capitals in 7

Panthers - Devils
Oh my, this is a tough one.
Should be gritty and emotional.
Panthers in 6

Penguins - Flyers
Should be a war.
Been a Phlyer believer since this years HBOs Winter Classic series, so I'm sticking with them.
Flyers in 6

Western Conference

Canucks - Kings
Hate to admit it, but Vancouver is just damn good again.
LA just doen't have enough, imo.
Canucks in 5

Blues - Sharks
The excitement in St Louie has to be fun,
The only time you'll see me pull for Oshie and Backes is during this playoff season, would be good for league to see them go a couple rounds.
Blues in 7

Coyotes - Blackhawks
Phoenix is a good example of "it all coming together" for a group that stuck thru some tough times.
They impressed the hell out of me the past couple weeks, while the Blackhawks have looked lost.
Yotes in 7

Predators - Red Wings
Classic new vs old, haves vs nots, unknowns vs dynasty.
Detroits finally been showing some chinks in the armor, they are ripe for picking.
Preds in 7

Another wild night.
Great playoff hockey
Tight, physical, grinding hockey-in-a-phone-booth stuff
Can see some of my predictions are already gone .. Chi is back on the screws. So is Boston. They've both turned it up a notch.
And oh yeah ... Vancouver sucks right now. Which is awesome.
Love the Kings tweet last night ... "to everyone outside of B.C. ........ You're Welcome"

When healthy  .... Marty Havlat's as good as it gets, and he had two HUGE ones tonight.
St Looie in trouble there .. The Sharks are in the same boat as the Caps ... no longer expected to win, which should make them dangerous as hell.
Also ... crazy to see Pouliot continue to be big for Boston. Thats a head-scratcher. And Joel Ward getting a regular shift in Washington yet.
And in the "yeah, so..." dept ... our old pal Kuba getting schooled In the garden by the Rangers.
And in more what-could-have-been news ... HATE losing Leddy. Kid is a playah.

Btw .... how the hell do you NOT suspend Shea Weber?
Freaking unreal.

Horrible non-action by Shanahan and the League.
Ridiculous.
Gregg Williams thought that was over the line.

That's awesome! It's unreal that they can be the most hated team in Canada when your competition for that 'honor" is Montreal and Toronto.
