I think that the most important piece of a championship hockey team is a core of defensemen who can advance the puck out of the zone. Those kind of players make life easy for the goalie, and they put their forwards in position for a lot of odd man rushes. If you can find those types of players and recruit solid depth on the lines, you've got it made.

The other part of the equation is actually knowing how to use them.

True. Is there a consensus opinion on the ability of Yeo and his coaching staff in Minnesota?

He's too inexperienced to be as stubborn as he is. We will see something, like bad D pairings, in the first month of the season. We spend the rest of the season bitching about it and he'll finally make a change the last week. It's frustrating as hell.

He also lacks the ability to right the ship quickly. Far too often we go in to a funk that lasts way too long. Although, I attribute that to our Captain too. He's far too calm. It's actually a very bad pairing. Captain that doesn't lead enough, vocally, and a young HC.

He is also obsessive compulsive when it comes to things like matching up LH & RH shots, is afraid to be the boss when it comes to veterans and generally overthinks things. That is why we routinely had PP units that did not feature most of our top scorers most of the time. Zach was the only top scorer who was on the top PP unit all season. Nino, Scandella, Zucker and to a lesser extent Spurgeon were left off the #1 unit and even the PP entirely in favor of guys like Pomminville, Coyle and Brodin either because of veteran status or they shot from the wrong side. Designing a unit to score goals without using most of your best goal scorers is just flat out stupid.

As the champagne finally dries up and the last pieces of confetti are vacuumed, attention turns to what, exactly, the Chicago Blackhawks might look like in 2015-16.

The Blackhawks have $64.05 million committed to the cap next season. That’s a lot.

They have 11 skaters under contract. That’s … not a lot.

"It kind of reminds me going into that summer of 2010," coach Joel Quenneville told the Chicago Tribune, in a comment that could send shivers down the spines of Blackhawks fans. "We knew we were going to have to lose a significant amount of our team, (but) losing almost half of it that summer, I didn't know we were going to lose that many. This year, I don't anticipate that amount. We'll see what happens, but certainly the nature of the game, this era, change is all part of it."

Chris Kuc of the Tribune explains how deep the cuts could go, as one player told him "all hell is going to break loose soon":

Fingers will be pointed at Bowman when the shedding of salaries costs the Hawks some key components. Along with the likely trade of alternate captain Patrick Sharp and his $5.9 million cap hit — a difficult move considering his talent and 10-year tenure on the team — players such as Bryan Bickell and Kris Versteeg, among others, could be shown the door. And then there are the unrestricted free agents who likely won't be back, including Brad Richards, Antoine Vermette, Johnny Oduya, Michal Rozsival and Daniel Carcillo.

So how do the Blackhawks restock the cupboard? Three ways:

1. The return on salary dumps.

The rumored asking price for Patrick Sharp – 1st-round pick, A-level prospect and top six forward on entry-level contract – is crazy pants, but so is any starting offer in a negotiation. What it does tell us is that GM Stan Bowman isn’t just going to shuffle off assets that are under contract for peanuts just to get them off the cap. Or at least he won’t with Sharp.

2. There are reinforcements on the way.

Unlike in 2010, the Blackhawks have several young players that could set up and fill-in the holes left by jettisoned vets.

From Kuc:

With young players such as [Brandon] Saad, Teuvo Teravainen and Andrew Shaw, that should be enough to make them a postseason contender for seasons to come. But around these parts, reaching the playoffs is setting the bar way too low. That is why Bowman has been stockpiling prospects not only through the draft but via free-agent signings. The core's supporting cast next season could include the likes of dazzling forward Artemi Panarin out of Russia, left-handed-shooting defenseman Erik Gustafsson from Sweden and college prospects Kyle Baun and Michael Paliotta. "Fortunately, we were able to get some guys that we're very excited to get," Bowman said. "We'll see where they all fit come training camp. I like the options that we will have."

So help could be on the way within the organization. And the outside?

3. Players want to play for the Hawks.

“One of the things that we talk about is consistency. When you’ve got the best captain in the NHL, a really young core … I think this is now a destination. Free agents want to come here,” said Blackhawks president John McDonough during the Hawks' celebration.

Sure, it helps when players like Brad Richards are flush with buyout money and can take a contract for peanuts from the Blackhawks for a season. But as their president said: Don’t discount how many free-agent derbies the Blackhawks might win by virtue of being a place where veterans want to play – and potentially win, as Richards did.

Losing Sharp and Bickell is addition by subtraction. Sharp is a problem in the locker room and Bickell can't play anymore. I want to keep Oduya but he doesn't appear to be in the future plans of the team. There will be a lot of new, young faces on the team next season.

Should be interesting
The Domino Effect, indeed .....

The goalie trade market will move in a hurry, one presumes, once the first deal is done this week.

The domino effect, as they say.

"That’s usually the case," veteran general manager Bryan Murray of the Ottawa Senators told ESPN.com on Wednesday morning from Las Vegas.

Murray is part of that intriguing goalie seller's market, listening on both Robin Lehner and Craig Anderson. The Vancouver Canucks continue to listen on Eddie Lack and Jacob Markstrom. The Los Angeles Kings could deal their restricted free agent Martin Jones.

And the New York Rangers will deal Cam Talbot. A source said that six teams are after Talbot right now.

"There are a couple of teams -- it seems to me three or four teams are at least looking, I’ve been talking to a couple of them quite seriously," Murray said. "But they’re waiting right now maybe to see what happens with other goaltenders, obviously the price other teams are asking versus another team. That’s all part of the scenario right now."

The Edmonton Oilers, Buffalo Sabres and San Jose Sharks are the most eager teams looking for a goalie. The Calgary Flames have also called around a bit; they haven’t re-signed pending unrestricted free-agent goalie Karri Ramo at this point.

Murray, who has a crowded crease after re-signing Andrew Hammond, is more likely to move Lehner, who is 23 and has more upside than the veteran Anderson.

And while Murray was careful not to mention Lehner by name, it’s pretty clear that’s who he was hinting at when examining the goalies available on the trade market.

"I believe I’ve got the best guy by a fair margin," said Murray. "That’s my belief, but that doesn’t necessarily fit with everyone else I guess."

Lehner is under contract for two more seasons ($2.25 million cap hit) and retains restricted-free-agent status for another two seasons after that. So he’s controllable for longer than Talbot or Lack are.

When does the first goalie trade go down? Murray figured as always that teams will get the most series just before the first round of the draft Friday.

"Yeah, I’m not sure it will be on the floor, but it will be right around that time frame I think," Murray said. "Unless somebody really feels that they want to be safe and get it done before that and be comfortable that they have their goaltender. That might happen today or tomorrow. But I suspect it will drag a little bit [to Friday]."

There are free-agent options out there, too, such as Ramo, Michal Neuvirth and Antti Niemi. And obviously Devan Dubnyk will lead the pack if he can’t come to terms on a new deal with the Minnesota Wild.

I like Lehner. A ton. Our system he could be good for a long time.

Markstrom, used to be a huge fan. Totally off him now. (Have owned him in a fantasy lg for many yrs from long ago when he was drafted in 2nd round by Florida many moons ago).

Talbot, eh...would just have to deal with his contract situation in 1 year, so sick of that scenario again.

I'd take UFA Niemi on a 1-year deal for so so coin and just deal with the goalie situation again in one year.

LAS VEGAS -- A change to the overtime format and the expansion of video replay to include a coach's challenge were approved by the NHL Board of Governors on Wednesday.

The change in overtime will see the League go to a 3-on-3 format for a five-minute period in regular-season games tied at the end of regulation. Previously, the League played 4-on-4 overtime. Regular-season games tied at the end of overtime will continue to be decided by a shootout.

The coach's challenge will be limited to goals scored on potential offside or goalie-interference plays.

The Board also approved a change to faceoff procedures that will have the defensive player place his stick on the ice first in all faceoffs not held at the center-ice dot. In the past, the visiting team player had to declare first; under the new rule, the only time the visiting player must declare first will be on center-ice faceoffs.

The 3-on-3 overtime is designed to create more space on the ice, allowing for more goals to be scored and more games ending in overtime rather than the shootout, similar to the success that the American Hockey League experienced this season.

By adding a 3-on-3 element to its overtime format, the AHL had 75 percent of its games that went past regulation time in 2014-15 decided in overtime. The number was 35.3 percent in 2013-14, when they played under a 4-on-4 overtime format.

The AHL's current overtime model extends overtime to seven minutes and starts with 4-on-4 before eventually going down to 3-on-3 if there were no goals scored through the first three minutes.

The NHL had 44.4 percent of games tied after regulation decided in overtime this season (136 of 306) in a 4-on-4 format.

Booooooo on the 3-on-3
Yayyyyyy on the coaches challenge
Whoaaaa on the face-off changes

Sure will open up some ice. I think the only time I ever played 3-3 was as a kid and there were only a few people at the rink. We used half the rink until more kids showed up. Make for some short shifts I am sure.
