The University of Minnesota had four representatives on the American Volleyball Coaches Association's All-North Region Team, announced today by the AVCA. Daly Santana, Samantha Seliger-Swenson, Hannah Tapp and Paige Tapp were all-region selections.

Head Coach Hugh McCutcheon was named the North Region's Coach of the Year, while Seliger-Swenson was named the North Region's Freshman of the Year.

B10 must have been loaded with top programs this year.

Like the NSIC in DII, couple locals in their final brackets too.

I didn't check rankings consistently, but I do know at one point at least 6 were in the top 25

Still have the U/Illinois/Nebraska/Wisconsin/Penn State/Ohio State playing. Nice. Michigan and Michigan St were eliminated in the 2nd round. Wolverines pushed UCLA to 5 sets

8 in the tourney is darn impressive.

The University of Minnesota volleyball team defeated Hawaii in four sets in the NCAA Regional Finals on Saturday night. The Gophers took the Rainbow Wahine to four sets, 25-18, 25-13, 24-26, 25-21, to improve to 30-4 on the season and advance to the Final Four in Omaha, Neb. on Dec 17.

The win marks the fourth trip to the Final Four since 2003. The only schools with more appearances in that span are Penn State (7), Texas (6), Stanford (5), and USC (5). The victory also marks the first win against Hawaii in school history. Minnesota also achieved Final Four status in 2009, 2004 and 2003.

I watched the match against Hawaii. The Gophers won the first 2 sets in blowout fashion. Then after half time, Hawaii regrouped and won the 3rd set. The 4th set was pretty tense. Hawaii got off to a quick lead and even expanded on it with the help some incredibly bad scoring calls. The bad calls went in Hawaii's favor 3-1. The Gophers went on a run when the rotation brought Daly Santana to the front row. She just took over and put the match away.

One of the mysteries of the tournament was how Hawaii went unseeded. They were on a 24 match winning streak, which was the longest in the nation this year. They destroyed Penn state in the Sweet 16. FWIW, the Penn State coach told the Hawii coach that the Gophers are the best team in the nation.

So, last time I played volleyball it was in Jamaica, I was setup with cold beers everywhere and it was on the beach. So, take it with a grain of salt, but I think this Texas team is pretty good too.

24-24, first set.

The first 3 sets were all hard fought and decided by 2 pts with the Gophers down 2-1. They were up 12-10 in the 4th set and looked like they were on their way to forcing a 5th set when the wheels came off. They had an avalanche of unforced errors that handed Texas the set and match on a platter.

http://www.startribune.com/nine-names-rise-to-top-of-gophers-ad-search/377478231/

Details on all listed are in the article

Among the nine leading candidates identified by sources to be the next University of Minnesota athletic director are two deputy ADs in the Big Ten, a stock market insider, the Northern Illinois AD and Gophers interim Beth Goetz.

The university’s emerging list of top candidates is wide-ranging and includes executives from the Rocky Mountains to Wall Street, according to the 14 people who spoke with the Star Tribune on the condition of anonymity so they could continue to stay close to the secretive search. Each of the nine has a previous tie to Minnesota or the Upper Midwest.

Deputy ADs Gene Taylor from Iowa and Phil Esten from Penn State, as well as Goetz, are expected to get formal interviews with the university’s search committee in coming weeks. Two of the outside names repeated most by sources are Northern Illinois AD Sean Frazier and Pete Najarian, the options trader and former Gophers football captain.

Friday is the application deadline, and Turnkey Search, a private search firm based in New Jersey, has been screening prospective candidates for university President Eric Kaler and the school’s 16-member search committee. Formal interviews are expected to take place the first two weeks of May.

Kaler and Turnkey President Len Perna declined to comment to the Star Tribune in recent days, and members of the search committee signed a confidentiality agreement. Prospective candidates also have been discouraged from talking publicly about the process.

I am in that camp, too. No one else even trips my trigger.

Gene Taylor was the NDSU AD for 13 years until 2014 and then went to Iowa as an Assistant, the Penn State AD dealt with the Football Asst Coach S Storem.....I see Najarian on TV all the time...don't know if has the experience but he has the bravado....

I almost have to give Taylor the edge for what he did for NDSU....

University of Minnesota President Eric Kaler has announced Mark Coyle as the finalist for the university's director of Gopher Athletics position.

Coyle is currently the director of athletics for Syracuse University where he has been since June 2015. Prior to Syracuse, he served as athletics director at Boise State University and as deputy athletics director at the University of Kentucky.

Coyle, 47, served as Associate Athletic Director for External Relations at the University of Minnesota from 2001 to 2005, where he was responsible for managing the marketing and sales unit, athletic communications, the ticket office and licensing. Under his guidance, the marketing staff was recognized as the top marketing staff in the Big Ten Conference.

Coyle is visiting campus Wednesday to interview with the search committee, and meet with coaches and other leaders in Gopher Athletics, faculty, and senior university leaders as part of the final steps of a comprehensive national search.

I don't know Mark Coyle but a person I highly respect and trust who knows him called me just now and raved about him. Calls it a great hire

Color me surprised, had no idea on Coyle. Very highly thought of by people I trust in college sports. I'm shocked.
