Coyle's first job is to clean up the Pitino mess.

Good luck.

That will be a walk in the park compared to his last gigs:

quote:

Chancellor Kent Syverud spoke of a desire for the new athletic director to be meticulous in NCAA compliance.

Coyle was hired three months after the NCAA sanctioned Boise State following rules violations in five of its sports, including football. Boise's probation ended in September, and now Coyle is walking into a department that was just placed on five years' probation and will need to provide annual reports to the NCAA on its compliance progress.

Boise kept its nose clean under Coyle, who juiced up compliance funding and hired more staff.

quote:

oyle was hired after a three-month search following the departure of Daryl Gross, who spent more than a decade in charge of SU athletics. Gross oversaw dramatic improvement of SU's non-revenue teams and on-field success but left the position in the aftermath of an NCAA investigation into the basketball program and with the football team struggling.

Coyle seemed like a logical fit due to his time at Boise State, when he oversaw a strong football program and a university dealing with the fallout of an NCAA investigation.

I don't know Mark Coyle but a person I highly respect and trust who knows him called me just now and raved about him. Calls it a great hire

Color me surprised, had no idea on Coyle. Very highly thought of by people I trust in college sports. I'm shocked.

Word is 4 p.m. news conference to introduce Coyle. Just talked to Maturi. Called him a "great hire." J Robinson also singing his praises.

That's quite an endorsement. Robinson hates everybody.

Well done, President Kaler!

Our market is really shoring itself up at the top, and with its facilities. I'd expect some championship runs in the next 5-10 years, folks.

I'm really stunned by this development. With the state of the major programs at the U it was obvious that Kaler needed to hit one out of the park with this hire. All I know about Coyle is the reaction that has been pouring in from all over. Based on this reaction it sounds like Kaler hit a grand slam with this hire. This sounds like an individual who knows every aspect of running an athletic department at a major D1 university. We may finally have a resolution to the abyss that is our chronically underachieving and chronically in trouble basketball program. The only caveat is that Joel Maturi is praising the hire. That gives me a little pause. In all congratulations to Kaler who went outside the box and appears to have hired someone who is not only accomplished, but still young and energetic. The local sports seems to be on a roll, going big to transform organizations. Now if the Twins would just get on board.

Pitino knows his butt is on the line with a new AD.

Met w/reporters today and says he hopes they want him to stay.

Serious cleanup on Aisle 7 for that program needed.

Faced with a must win situation down 3-0 after the first two innings the University of Minnesota Gophers fought back like they have done all season long and pulled out a 7-5 victory on a long, cold and rainy night in Seattle.

"Any day you get a win in the postseason is a good day and I am very proud of the team for that," head coach Jessica Allister said. "We are looking forward to playing more softball tomorrow."

The Gophers fell 5-2 earlier in the day to Washington. They will rematch the Huskies tomorrow needing to win twice to get out of the regional. The game is set for 2 p.m. CT with the final game coming 30 minutes after the completion of that one if needed.

NDSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the Maroon and Gold who left five runners on base in the first two innings of play.

In the top of the third it finally came together for Minnesota knocking in five runs. Maddie Houlihan was walked and Sara Groenewegen singled to put runners on the corners early. Taylor LeMay hit an RBI single through the left side for the Gophers first run.

Later in the inning Kayla Wenner singled to third base and Sara Groenewegen came around and scored on an error. The icing on the cake came with two outs as Sydney Fabian launched a three home run over the left field wall giving the Gophers a 5-3 lead.

Kylie Stober came in to pitch in the third inning relieving Nikki Anderson. She had two big strikeouts keeping the momentum in the Gophers favor. She picked up the win in the game.

Danielle Parlich opened the top of the fourth with one of her three singles on the day. She advanced to second on a wild pitch and was brought home by a second LeMay RBI on the evening.

On the next play LeMay reached second on a wild pitch and Houlihan came home after NDSU tried to pick her off at third but threw the ball away.

The Bison did not go quietly adding two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Groenewegen came into the circle in the fourth and pitched the rest of the way through getting her second save this season. She closed out the fourth, fifth and sixth innings on strikeouts.

The Gophers bats never quite got going again but they were able to survive with the win. They had 10 hits in the game with three from Parlich and two each from LeMay and Wenner. Anderson, Stober and Groenewegen combined for 10 strikeouts and only gave up three earned runs. Stober moves to 4-3 on the season with the win.

Even former Gophers are not immune to issues these days
Oh Ricky...

Former University of Minnesota quarterback Rickey Foggie’s quest to become the new head football coach at Eagan is not over.

Foggie, who accepted the job on May 13 only to be put in a position where he was asked to resign Monday night, said Wednesday night that he would fight to keep the job.

According to Foggie and his supporters, the Eagan administration rejected his candidacy after learning that he may have inadvertently followed, and liked, a Twitter account that promotes a pornography website. At first Foggie was asked to take his Twitter site down and speak to the football players about it, which he did Monday morning. He was called back by Eagan administrators Monday evening, where he was confronted again about the Twitter site.

“It was an accidental follow, but I accepted that it was a mistake,” Foggie said. “I talked to the kids and they were so supportive. You could see in their eyes they were ready for something different. I’m not sure what changed.”

School District 196 released a statement Tuesday saying that he resigned for personal reasons. Foggie said he felt he didn’t have a choice.

“I was backed into a corner,” he said. “I was led to understand that the “like” would go away quietly if I went away quietly. But I’ve never been someone who’s involved in things like [pornography]. That’s not in my character.”

Foggie, who lives in Eagan, said his tough upbringing trained him not to back down from a fight, so he’s vowed to keep working to get the Eagan football coaching position. He’s had plenty of support from the community. According to one member of the Eagan football booster club, the school received almost two dozen calls in Foggie’s favor Wednesday.

“Most people want him here,” said Paul Bjorklund, who has a son on the football team. “We felt like when he came and apologized, it was a perfect teachable moment. The kids really wanted to play for him.”

Initally Foggie, who previously coached at Park Center and Red Wing, thought he might walk away, but discovered he had “other options.”

“A lot of people are supporting me,” he said. “I grew up in the south, where my mother and father had to fight racism every day,” said the South Carolina native. “I feel like my reputation is on the line have to protect it. And I want to do it for the kids. That’s the whole reason I coach. They’re the ones who lose out here.”

RIP
Kids will be playing hard for him.
Sounded like a straight shooter they all loved.
Touching how John Anderson cant really talk about him without breaking down.
He's had a great impact and hopefully the boys shock a team or two in his memory.

Gotta be super careful these days because people are super sensitive.
Just went thru my yearly purge of social media accounts again per orders.
Sorry to drop some of you guys and add you back every year ... but its the way it is now.
