I'm surprised they pulled it off with Zahui having an off night. She only had 4 blocks to go with her 20pts and 15 reb.

With feeling disappointed about the football game, I forgot the ladies played yesterday. Thanks for posting that Phil

Zahui B. is turning in an unstoppable force in the post. By the time she is done, she have destroyed every record for a post player that McCarville currently holds. Another 5 blocked shots and 4 assists to go with her near miss 20/20. I'll say again that the Big Ten season is going to come down to guard development. Shayne Mullaney had her second straight double digit output and Carlie Wagner had a very strong all around game. She is the X factor. It looks like she adjusting to the next level of competition and asserting her game. The ceiling for this team is obviously not as high as it was before Banham's injury, but they can still have a successful season.

Without Rachel Carlie will be getting the playing time to help her improve every game

Finally a Gopher athletic team thumps a Wisconsin team. The win Gopher women are now 5-0 since Banham was injured. Under Borton they couldn't even hold a lead if Banham was off the floor for more than a couple of minutes.

The Minnesota Womens basketball team continued their improbable roll after losing Rachel Banham for the season by defeating Wisconsin 72-60 in Madison. The win moves the Gophers to 14-1 overall and 3-0 in the Big Ten. The Gophers will most likely be ranked when the new polls come out on Monday. Shae Kelly scored 13 of her 17 points in the second half to lead the team. Reigning Big Ten Player of the Week Amanda Zahui B. added 11 points and 12 rebounds to record her 11th double-double on the season. According to Gophersports.com : The victory pushed the Gophers' winning streak to 10 games, their longest since 2003-04, while it also gave the Maroon and Gold a 3-0 record in Big Ten action for the first time since 2005-06. Head coach Marlene Stollings' 14-1 record to begin her first season at the helm of the Minnesota program ties for the best start to a season by a Gopher first-year head coach, while she is the only first-year head coach at Minnesota to post three-straight wins to open Big Ten play. Congrats to Coach Stollings and her team. The Gophers will get a week to recover before hosting former Gopher coach Brenda Frese and her soon to be top 10 ranked Maryland Terrapin team at Williams Arena on Sunday 1/11.

2 women's teams that play above average. Wish all the men's sports in the state could get their act together.

Yep, even considering they played a fair amount of human sacrifices earlier, the win over Nebraska was big, they are undefeated in conference play including a road victory. If they can pull the upset over Maryland and their old coach Brenda Freise who will be in the top 10, they should climb well into the top 25.

The biggest concern right now is depth. They are getting very few minutes and even fewer points from the bench. Even Kayla Hirt seems to have disappeared. That has to change going forward. There is no margin for error if they run into foul trouble or another injury.

They are now ranked #23. First time in the top 25 in 9 years.
Zahui B. won her second consecutive Big Ten player of the week and is the national player of the week.

Gophers lost a tough game to Maryland yesterday. They showed they belong in the top of the Big 10 right now

That was a hard fought and very entertaining game to watch. Zahui B. was a monster once again: FG 11/15, FT 4/4, PTS 26, REB 15, STL 3, BLK 4. Maryland couldn't match up against her at all. Kelley is a nice complimentary inside scorer, though her rebounding has fallen off quite a bit.Unfortunately the Gophers lack of guard depth showed. Wagner was pretty solid again, but she is still a bit inconsistent with her shot even though she nailed that pressure 3 to tie it at 73 with less than 20 seconds to play. Shayne Mullaney is proving to be a good distributor and floor general, but he turnovers returned against a good pressure defense. Again, we only got a total of 10 points from the bench and it is a very short bench.

Sure appears this group battles.
Great post game from the coach.
Praised the effort while not letting them be happy about it.
She seems to be the real deal.
That's a great showing against a national power, even after losing your bell cow.
Other MN teams would sit around whining about their situation. These girls just get after it. Commendable.

It was an entertaining and intense battle against a final four team from last year that was decided in the last 2.8 seconds. And I agree, Stollings looks like the real deal as a coach. I guarantee you that even with a healthy Banham, Pam Borton would not have this team in this position.

Yep. Shook off the tough loss to a top 12 opponent and won a tough road game. Ohio State had picked up top 25 votes and the game was on their court. This is a mentally tough team, Unlike many of our other pro and college sports teams.

This Indiana team is young and could be tough for a couple of years. Every time the Gophers tied the gam, they would hit a couple big shots to pull away again. The Gophers did a poor job on the boards giving up 2nd and 3rd chance points. Need to clean that up.

They won playing a disjointed game with Zahui B. and Mullaney in foul trouble. Their defense kept Indiana from getting away while they were on the bench. As Jim pointed out, the amount of second, third and fourth chance points they were giving up was just ridiculous. Kelley kept them in the game through out and then Wagner nailed the back to back 3's and scored off the inbound play to put them ahead.
BTN had Stollings miked for the game. It was pretty interesting to hear the way she talked to her players. She said, "they're done getting penetration. They're done!" Indiana shot from the outside the rest of the game. She told them in another time out "We take the lead and hold it now!' Lead taken, lead held. She is very intense and very much in control.

Despite the loss to Maryland the Gophers move up 2 spots to #21 in the AP poll. Maryland moved up to #7.
