If you're an out of towner Directv is the only way to go, IMO.  All though, I am really pissed at them right now.  They added all the new HD channels but you can't get them unless you "upgrade" again.  I've been a customer of theirs for 10 years.   And, I was an original HD guy and have already had to pay for an upgrade.  You would think they would throw you bone once in a while.

Like the cable companies, they got you where they want you. They could care less if you switch.

Yes, when I had DirectTV I was in Calif and used it to watch Minn sports, but I also kept my cable. My DTV was free.

Comcast does the same thing. You have to pay up the ass to get the digital channels.

Wow. Down 16 in the 2nd half on the road and they come back to win. Unreal.

We need to keep Tubby FOREVER.

And, of course, Squid Hartman rips out a story praising Monson for recruiting them.
He's priceless. THAT's what he got out of that game?
You can feel the momentum building under Tubby.
The U needs that program to succeed. So far, so good.

Under Monson, down 16 on the road, there is no way in hell we lose by less than 30. Seriously.

Zactly, David.
My first thought after reading Squid was, "yep, good job recruiting them, but #1, Dandy Dan wouldn't have had them on the floor in "crunch" time, and #2, with Dandy Dan there wouldn"t have been any "crunch time"".

And in 3 years Al Nolan would still be exactly the same player that he was as a freshman.

...which wouldn't be as good as we've seen this far under Tubby.  What a coach.  Man, the Big 10 network crap is killing me.

Can't wait to get to the Barn -- am bummed I'm missing Indiana and Michigan State this week.  I have Iowa tickets, which, at this rate, should be a cakewalk, and may have a line on a Wisconsin ticket, which should be a great game.  Would love to get the "94 East" chant going at that one...

I forgot all about this thread.

It is truly amazing what Tubby has done there so far.  He really was not a great coach at Kentucky, or at least not a great recruiter, of late.  I wonder if he's just so much more comfortable at the U that either he's making his own expectations because they're so much less than the ones at Kentucky, or if he's gotten a 2nd wind/passion for coaching or something.  Truly amazing.

I really don't get it with Gillespie either.  He was a GREAT coach at A & M.  Simply had the place rocking.  And Patrick Patterson is a BEAST.  Duke was the other frontrunner for him.  I still maintain that with him, Duke wins the national title this year, without question.  The Duke teams with a true beast of a big man (Brand/Boozer/Battier) to go with the outside shooters/good guard play, always win.  I don't know what the hell Gillespie has done at Kentucky.

Lastly, for strike 3 for me, I still don't know what the hell happened to Monson.  He was a great coach at Gonzaga as well, and I followed him closely.  Now he hasn't been able to coach to save his life.  I'm really curious to see what he does at LBS after a year or two to see which Monson is the real deal.

College ball is my second favorite sport (by a mile) to only baseball.  So it really pains me that I have apparently been THIS wrong on 3 big coaches like this.

Oh well, all of college ball is really coming into a big upswing I really think.  The Pac10 has been awful for years but now they're very good with a lot of great, great college coaches.  The ACC's always gonna be a powerhouse.  The BigEast is now a super conference.  The Big12 has gotten much better now that Texas is focused on basketball.  And now the Big10 is getting very strong again with Ohio State turning to basketball and now Tubby.

I love it.  Can't wait to watch the next few years.

Dustin, I think Tubby's short comings at Kentucky, especially as a recruiter were greatly exagerated. Patrick Patterson was recruited to Kentucky by Tubby. McDonalds and Parade All American PG Jai Lucas (son of John Luas) verbally committed to Tubby at Kentucky and backed out when Tubby took the Gopher job. Not to mention Tubby did win a national title at Kentucky.

I think Tubby was a victim of a different era of college basketball vs the high expectations of KU fans and alumni. The days of the title being won every year by one of Duke, North Carolina and Kentucky are over. There are too many high powered coaches that have built great programs around the country to compete with the traditioanl powers. Especially in an era where players are only staying for 1 year and opting for the draft. In short its a very different era in college hoops than it was as recently as when Pitino coached KU.

Monson is a hard one to figure. I remember when he was hired, he was a rising star among college coaches. Word was that the Gophers had beaten other big schools to the punch.

Since then the rumblings I have heard are that Monson reaped the benefits of a tremendous coaching staff running a program that was not in an elite conference. Some thought he got a major coaching job at least a year too soon and he was overmatched recruiting against major powers in a big time conference. Especially when the program was on probation when he took over.

He will need a couple of years to bring LBS back. Apparently they graduated their top 9 scorers after last season, so he is building from square 1.

Ya,the WCC isn't exactly a power, but Pepperdine was a damn good squad and an annual tourney team and there was great competition between them.  I've definitely heard the Mark Few argument though, and it could be true, as Gonzaga has clearly continued as a solid program.  Ya on LBS, that's why I said a few years.  I know it's gonna be very tough the gauge the first couple with that team.

On Tubby, while I agree on the expecations/changes in CBB, he still didn't do too much there to me.  His title was won with Pitino's players.  I agree he obviously recruited very well there the last year (Patterson/Lucas) but before that his recruiting had fallen a bit and wasn't quite up to KU standards IMO.

As I said, he's really proving me wrong now though.  Excited to see him keep it up.  College FB and BB I have some major issues re; allegiances, because while I obviously like the Gophers, for some reason I have always really like Michigan in football and Duke in basketball ever since I was a little kid.  And I obviously have to root for the Waves due to college.

We need a general NCAA BB thread.

Man, don't you just love conference play?  Duke holds off Florida State.  UNC gets a big scare from GT.
And it looks like The General is going to get #900 tonight.

Paul Hewitt and Leonard Hamilton, as coaches, are both underrated, IMO.

Agreed on all Pete.  There may be no better regular season in sports than ACC conference play to me.  Simply great to watch.  Totally with you on Hewitt/Hamiton too.

I must say, I hate Pac10 bball in comparison, but I'm really missing it this year because the coaching is much, much improved there.  Bennett is freaking insane at Washington State.  Nobody gets more out of less talent than he does there.   And now Sendek is turning ASU into something.  It still baffles me that NCState let him go.  Way unrealistic IMO.  Kind of like Gophers football.  You're not going to beat Michigan/Ohio State.  You're just not.  It's the same with NCState.  You're not going to beat Duke/UNC.  Try to be realistic.

Lastly, I wish the General would just retire/get fired already.  I really want Coach K to pass him as soon as possible.

Oh, and again, I totally own up to the fact that I'm biased since I'm a Duke fan, but the fact that UNC is still ranked above Kansas and Memphis is completely indefensible IMO.

Kansas?  Come on.  Who have they played?

I'm not a UNC fan, but right now they deserve the #1.  That's the beauty of the game though, they'll have to earn the #1, not have it appointed.

Kansas, IMO, is the best team in the country.  They're a better team than UNC to me.  And I would Memphis at a very close #2.  I really believe that will end up being the national title game.  UNC will lose to someone earlier in the tourney I think.  I do think they'll do well in the conference this year, because the ACC is a bit down and Duke is their only real challenger.  And even though I think Hansbrough is incredibly overrated (Kris Humphries II to me) Duke is very small this year and has noone that can defend him.

Like I asked, who have they (Kansas) played?  They have only played outside of Lawrence 4 or 5 times and they have had a soft non-conference schedule.  Hell, they struggled against Arizona, USC and GT.
The conference is weak this year and they'll go into the tournament seeded lower than they should.  I definitely don't see them as final four material.

Very true.  There comes a point where you need more talent.  Hell, Princeton was always extremely well coached.  Doesn't mean they were going to win it all.  And it will always be tough for WSU to get superior talent.  I just like/respect what he does there a lot.

I would ask the same of UNC though.  They haven't really played anyone either and have come closer to losing.  And have not played as well IMO.  Memphis and Kansas have both been playing extremely well overall.

You say Arizona (pretty solid), USC (the #24 team), and GT, but UNC has eeked out wins against Davidson, Nicholls State, and now GT.   And they haven't beaten anyone of note either, other than eeking out a win against Clemson, which I would contend is not really much better at all than USC.

Actually, after looking at the schedules again, Memphis really has the biggest beef for the #1 slot.  At least they beat a very good Georgetown squad convincingly, with their other "good" wins being just as impressive as both UNC and Kansas.  They really should be #1 IMO.

Again, the great thing about NCAA BB is that the rankings don't matter.  They have to win it.  I just don't see a big enough difference between Memphis and UNC that would make me want to debate about it.

I see plenty of weaknesses in Carolina's game, perimeter shooting being one of them.  Also, Calipari's new system of one-on-one, beat your man basketball, will certainly be put to the test in the tournament.

Incidentally, I believe UNC has played twice as many road games as Kansas has thus far.
