The reason they had so many 3's is they couldn't get the ball in closer. Some were made with hands in the face and others 4-6 ft beyond the arc. I didn't care seeing them going in, but I would rather see them launch lower percentage shots then the ones in the paint

24 made 3s against us in 2 games. Too many wide open looks.

What concerns me is wondering why we double post players that are way smaller than the Gopher guarding them - thus leaving perimeter guys open.

Yep. Tubby doesn't seem to trust the interior guys enough, on either end of the court.

That's one of the better frontcourt groups in the country IMO.

It's his system. He's done the ball-line thing for ages and it works for him. It makes less sense against lesser opponents, I agree, but you don't want to change your system once the conference schedule rolls around.

Sure. But you should be able to tweak it for varying opponents.

If he can't against Cornell/Virginia, what's he going to do in the tournament?

Not gonna see a real tournament team with a 6-6 big guy. Cornell made the sweet 16 with a talented 7 footer.

Short answer: No. Long answer: Had a few bad losses (including WKyU at home by more than 20) but have played a bit better as of late. Not the bubble SJU teams of years past, though.

Gophers up by 10 on the road against St. Joseph. It's not on tv but a stream can be found below. Audio is horrible, so I'd supplement it with the radio.

Much different game when your opponent is 3-17 from downtown - and shooting 23% overall.

Whoops

Al Nolen could miss up to six weeks with plantar fasciitis, multiple sources familiar with the senior point guard's injury told the Star Tribune Friday.
Nolen hasn't played since the Gophers' 84-65 win over North Dakota State Nov. 24. After that game, Tubby Smith said Nolen would miss time, possibly two weeks or more, with a foot injury described as a borderline stress fracture.
Plantar fasciitis involves pain and inflammation of tissue, according to mayoclinic.com.
Nolen has missed three games.
A six-week layoff would mean that the former Minneapolis Henry star would miss the team's first three Big Ten games: at Wisconsin Dec. 28, at Michigan State Dec. 31 and home against Indiana Jan. 4. It would put him on track to return in time for the Jan. 9 road matchup at Ohio State.
Smith said Friday that he's not sure if Nolen will be ready for the team's Big Ten opener but said his rehab has gone well.
Sources familiar with Nolen's injury said the Gophers captain would love to return in time for the team's first conference game but he may not be ready.
"I think he’s going to be out for a [awhile]," one source said. "[The only way for him to get better] is to stay off it for awhile."
Nolen led the Big Ten in steals (2.8 per game) prior to his injury. It's unclear when or how Nolen injured the foot. He played 28 minutes against the Bison before sitting out the next three games.
The Gophers could use his defensive prowess. They're last in the Big Ten in scoring defense (69.9 points per game allowed) and three-point field goal percentage defense (37.7 percent).

I never missed any work when I had it and I worked on my feet. Worst part is getting up in the morning after the foot has relaxed all night

I can speak from experience that plantar fasciitis is extremely painful. It seems like a lot of athletes play with it, but man, it's tough to walk on.

Jim is correct, the most painful part is the first steps after your feet have been up. At its worst if feels like you're walking on nails.

But oddly, as you walk around a bit, the sharp pain eases up. And with the trainers they have, I suspect they can heal up quicker than us common yokels.

Have the Gophers shot poorly in all of their games from the free throw line?

I think they shot well against West Virginia especially Nolen

Sorry. I know that I can look up these things up. Sometimes I do, and you'll see my edit. I prefer it when I'm not talking to myself, though.

Why aren't the Gophers routing Eastern Kentucky at home? Are they playing to the level of their competition?

The usual. Too many turnovers, spotty perimeter defense and not taking advantage of our size difference.

Good question. No one is hitting anything

I can't believe how far away from the 3 pt line that EKU are launching the 3's. Sure some will go in, but hard to win at that percentage. Gophers can't extend the defense to far out and open up the baseline

So far its an 11-0 run for us in the first 6+ minutes of the 2nd half.

Its too bad Mbakwe can't hit FTs. That could be an issue in the Big10 season.
