I spent a lot of time in that area.  MD fans would be all over Tubby if he has the same "success" there as he's had here.

Is that what we're calling it?

exactly. Williams is a much better coach than Tubby IMO.

Article by Doogie from a couple months ago claiming the only job Tubby will leave MN for is Maryland.

I could see it; I think the ACC "challenge" coaching-wise would invigorate him and I think he'd love to try to compete against Roy and Coach K. He's supposedly really close with Roy Williams too. And that's not meant as a knock on the Big10 coaches; they have some very good ones, obviously. But Roy/Coach K are another level up right now IMO.

Still, I don't really know why Maryland would want him; Williams is a better coach than Tubby IMO.

Ha! Aren't I stupid. I didn't even realize that Williams was retiring and that's what predicated this.

My bad.

Still, Williams to Tubby is a step down for Maryland IMO.

Williams was one of the best. One heck of a career there. Said even from a Duke fan.

Maryland will be able to choose from any number of great candidates. I can't imagine them wanting Tubby.

Steve Francis?  I kid, I kid.  I'm not even that big of a college hoops fan but one of the best moments in sports is when the Dukie fans gave it to him with thunderous chants of "Junior college...clap/clap/clapclapclap.....Junior college...."

Looks like Sampson stayed in the draft. What a delusional dumbshit.

Soft, clumsy and no heart.  I fully expect to see him in a Wolves uniform soon.  He's Rick Rickert part II.

Maybe that is a good thing for the Gophers though. I'm not sure how much to believe Sid, but the other day he said there is a player waiting to transfer in that Tubby likes but until Sampson makes up his mind there is no scholarship available. I'm not sure if Tubby needs to keep it with Sampson until after the draft or not though since I believe as long as no agent is hired he can still return if not drafted in 1st rd.

And he's back.

Wah hoo!

Ralph Sampson III has removed his name from the NBA draft and will return for his senior season at Minnesota. Sampson made the announcement on Monday. Coach Tubby Smith says the 7-foot forward entered his name in the draft to ``test the waters.'' He attended a pre-draft workout with other prospects before making the decision.
Sampson consulted with his family, including former Virginia superstar Ralph Sampson, and ultimately decided to return for his final season.
The younger Sampson averaged 10.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.0 blocks for the Golden Gophers last season.

It's bad. I would rather roll the dice with a late recruit or juco transfer. Sampson is a skilled marshmellow.

Press release:

Tubby Smith Statement Regarding Surgery

“Amid speculation I want to make it aware that I did in fact undergo a procedure on April 21 at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester,” said Golden Gopher Head Basketball Coach Tubby Smith. “During my regular physical last spring it was discovered that my prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels were high. A biopsy was done and it was discovered that I had early stages of prostate cancer. I am happy to say that the cancer was contained and removed and I am now cancer free and feeling great.”

“I want to thank Dr. Gettman and Dr. Litin at the Mayo clinic for everything they have done for me,” added Smith. “I am a proponent of regular prostate examines and hope that men, especially African-American men, continue to have regular checkups. Again, I am feeling great and can’t wait for the upcoming season.”

What's there to say? Are you honestly excited for the season? I mean, this isn't the Monson years, but hard to be too jacked up.

Yep.  Tubby is all but gone IMO.  I just don't see much to be excited about, unfortunately.

With the money he is paid, I'm afraid that he is expected to do much better than this. It has been another case of unrealized expectations. What has been particularly disappointing to me is to see the repeated exodus of players. That doesn't normally happen with a great coach.
