Did Colton Iverson retire?

He transferred to Colorado State. He knew he wouldn't get many minutes with Mbakwe and (we thought) Walker.

My prediction is that this team just won't be very good. It will probably hasten the end of Tubby's coaching career.

I don't really follow bball much (just the Gophers actually) so my opinion doesn't count for much but they look like terrible shooters.   All of them.

Perhaps the two best shooters are Osenieks and Sampson. That's never a good sign. It's not like this team is completely flawed, but three point shooting, point guard play, and three point defense are huge question marks. We have some guards who could very well step up the first two, and Austin Hollins and Williams SHOULD be able to cover a hot hand on the perimeter. We'll see.

Lots of new players, right? Maybe they can improve over the course of the season. Sampson and Mbakwe are returning starters. Am I missing any other returning starter(s)?

Williams is a returning [mostly] starter at SF. The guards so far have be the Hollins brothers* who are a freshman and sophomore with no starting experience.

Was Williams a starter last season? He was the MVP of today's game.

Williams started pretty much every game last year, and later in the year at SG (when the only vets were Hoffarber, Williams, Mbakwe, Iverson, and Sampson).

Seems like every team Minn plays have players that can knock down the 3 even with a hand in their face, while the Gophers can't hit them to save their soul? Doesn't Tubby recruit shooters?

This team needs to make better passes. Hopefully it improves to make life easier on them

The big question: Welch has proven to be an excellent closer. At some point, should he be a starter? Welch had a game-high 17 (easily his best as a Gopher). Andre Hollins added 16 points in just 19 minutes as he again battled foul trouble.

Good win but this team was unprepared and lacking effort in the first half. Defense tightened up in the second half, but if it wasn't for some easy transition points, we would have lost to a lesser team.
Our guard play in the half court set is awful. We don't even feed our own beast. Lots of work to do.

Are the winning of these games in the 2nd half a function of greater depth? Tubby certainly is playing a lot of players.

I think so. Their opponents seem very winded by the end.

Part of it, as well, is that Tubby is still one of the x's and o's coaches in the game. His coaching is questioned because he doesn't have the guards he needs (an injured Sampson doesn't help, either) but these comebacks come down to coaching, too.

When different players step up each game, it seems to justify playing with more players and adjusting the players on the court based on how the games progress. That has to be healthy for the team when the player knows that he gets minutes only when he plays better.

Not to be the nattering nabob of negativity, but the Gophers are making an awful lot of work out of teams they should stomp.

That's because they're not that good! The key to their season appears to depend on the development of their guard play.

Exhibitions aside, the one bad team they played they did stomp. DePaul is very much improved. Indiana State was a Tournament team and may very well be again.

Right now, my hopes are with Julian Welch and Andre Hollins. It's not a lot to shout about now, but my hope is that they can develop, especially since they both just joined the team.

Trevor down and out. Hope against hope that it's not an ACL, but I guess it looked pretty bad. And having him in tears on the sidelines doesn't make you too optimistic either.

Ugh -- why does it always have to happen to this team? The one guy on the team you COULDN'T afford to lose, and he goes down. Ugh.

Thats a death blow, from what I've seen of this team so far.
Just awful.

Absolutely nothing can go right for this team. So many opportunities to get this team back on the national map over the last 2+ years, and each have fizzled out in excruciating fashion.

I feel bad for you ardent followers
At one time I was as big as Goph BB fan as there was... but I've really strayed, with hockey taking up all my winter time.
That was a very succesful and proud program for many years.
Sure seems cursed lately tho. Good luck to you all, on turning it around.
Its definitely an important program for the U.
