Mbakwe is on the pre-season Wooden Award list.

Trevor Mbakwe, 6-8, Sr., F, Minnesota
"He's a warrior. He's one of the best offensive rebounders that has been in this league since I've been around. He plays hard and physical."

After reading about last nights Gopher program last night, I can't wait to see Hollins on the floor.

Strib made it sound like the Gophers coming-out party at Williams was pretty impressive.
Would be nice to see the program get back to respectable level.
Sounds like there are some athletes on the team, for sure.

It's a tune-up game. Syracuse lost to a DII team a few years back and went on to the Sweet 16.

We're relying on young guards, and our one juco guard was out with a tweaked ankle. Our other "veteran" guards are Austin Hollins (who looks like more of a SF than a SG) and Armelin. It's going to take some time.

Bleacher report has the Gophers 9nth in the Big Ten. It should be pointed out that there are now 12 teams in the Big 10. Still, that doesn't sound very promising. Maybe it's time for local teams to surpass expectations. I personally expect them to do better than that.

I could see them finishing 3rd through 9th. It all depends on if guard play works out and (with recent talk of Walker red-shirting) there are no major injuries in the front court.

... or players that request to be transferred?

I don't see any transfer candidates (of scholarship players) from this squad. Not saying it's impossible, just that it's unlikely. Only possibilities are Ahanmisi and Armelin if they don't get the playing time they're looking for.

How many players will the team actually use for the games when they count? Would you all consider it to be a deep roster, or maybe just deep at certain positions?

PG - An Hollins, Welch, Ahanmisi
SG - Au Hollins, Coleman, Armelin
SF - Williams, Osenieks
PF - Mbakwe, Ingram, Halvorson
C - Sampson, Eliason

There's some walk-on guard as well, but I can't come up with his name at the moment.

The bolded guys are a legit 5+1, IMO. (Yeah, I'm a big believer in the freshmen and think they'll contribute a lot come Big Ten time, and I think this is the breakout year for Williams) Eliason is still kind of awkward and gangly but should be fine to give you a few extra fouls and spell Sampson if we need height on the floor. Obviously the whole season hinges on Mbakwe. If he gets hurt we're half the team we are with him. He's a legitimate superstar on the college ranks, but the only problem is a PF is about the worst position (if you can paint it as a bad thing) to have a superstar at. I think mot of those guys will see time every game, because Tubby likes to press. I think this year will exceed expectations for once, even if expectations are a bit tempered compared to the past two years.

That's the one!

I left off Walker, since it sounds like he may redshirt. If he's healthy, I'd expect him to be the getting most of the non-starter big man minutes.

So you think 13 players will get minutes in each game? That sounds like a lot.

We're gonna win, but it hasn't been pretty. Mbakwe making all his free throws (almost) is a good sign, but I'd like to see him score from the floor too.

I watched 15 minutes of that game.  About 10 to end the first half and 5 after halftime.  I've not seen a minute of the season up to that point.  That team sucks.  We are going to get murdered in conference play.

WTF?  I thought bringing in Tubby would make us a legit team

I haven't watched a game yet. Nevertheless, I have the sense that our team can win some ugly games in conference play. I'm just saying "some", mind you.

This team isn't bad, but probably not great. As great as Mbakwe is, he's not a scorer. He just puts himself into situations where points for a guy like him are inevitable. Add Devoe Joseph or Royce White to the mix and this is a Big Ten contender.
