From Espn's preseason Big-Ten shootaround

Minnesota
The Golden Gophers could be the chic pick to be the league's surprise team in Tubby Smith's second season. Smith brought in a strong recruiting class headlined by guard Devoe Joseph and center Ralph Sampson III, whose frontcourt presence becomes vital after the losses of Dan Coleman and Spencer Tollackson. Minnesota lost its top three scorers from last season and will look for more heroics from guard Blake Hoffarber and continued development from Lawrence Westbrook. Hoffarber and Westbrook form a solid backcourt with point guard Al Nolen and senior Jamal Abu-Shamala, who spent the summer playing for the Jordan national team (that's the country, not the future Hall of Famer).

Great to see.  Things are definitely looking up for MN college sports right now.

Pro sports, not so much.

Great game against Colorado State - very entertaining. The MWC is an underrated conference, there are some players there, just ask Wisconsin who lost to UNLV two years ago in the tourney and UConn last year who lost to San Diego. So don't think they played a cupcake by any means even though CSU had a terrible record last year. By the end of the year they started to get things together and even won a game and were very competetive in the conference tournament.

The gophs are young and look it. Lots of unforced errors and they get out of control sometimes. But they are very talented and apparently quite deep. Iverson is tough. Sampson showed a nice touch. Carter can create shots. Nolen can take control of a game. Hoffarber's game is becoming more balenced. Busch showed a low-post game.

They ran the press beautifully for a long stretch. They will be fun to watch this year, if I can find them on the internet on occasion. Any ideas?

I caught a bit of the Gophers the other night and was quite impressed with Colton Iverson. He still could use to but on some weight and get stronger, but he has time since he is a true freshman

I was at the game. He looked very good. Lots of post offense and a really sweet baby hook. He also threw a couple nice passes.

He's going to be very good.

Where's the love for Tubby's boys?
Nice win over Virginny tonight.
Any BigTen win against the ACC is a surprise.

It's a Tubby tornado! They started out slow but once they took the lead they never gave it up, right?

Last years two rookies, Blake and Al, are getting better and add in the new guys like Iverson and Sampson and the steady Johnson and Westbrook and Tubby has a very good team

What a comeback for Tubby's team today. Down by 12 at the half and came back to win 71-54. Good job Gophers!

Great second half! Ended the game on a 38-8 run. Defense was just swarming.

Only caught parts of the game lastnight but we seemed to dominate.  9-0 and looking pretty good.  I see this as a lower level tourney team and only getting better because we are very young.

WOW!!

What a huge win over the #9 ranked team!

First time beating a top 10 team in almost 9 years.

Who'd a thunk we'd win with Nolan, Hoffarber and Busch as our top 3 scorers????

WOW!!

I know he had a nice game and all....but....does anyone else get an uneasy Punto vibe with Travis Busch?  He ends up on the floor more often than a legitimate Div I college basketball player ever should.  Looks like he might be getting more time from 'coach' than he should.  There's just something that bothers me about his game.  And oh yeah, the announcers unabashedly praise him for 'grit' and 'hustle' to no end.

This win makes me think they can be very copetitive with the big guns in the Big 10.

And Matt, I disagree with you on Busch. That is the type you want, very scrappy. But he won't get into the NBA IMO. There is always Europe and they pay well now.

Thats a win you can hang your hat on.
Only a matter of time before Tubby starts getting national love.
Only our second road game.
Hoffarber has done more than I ever dreamed he could at the U. Solid kid, need that cold-blooded shot.

I liked what Busch brought but he did start taking a few too many shots in the 2nd half.  Really love BH.  His 3's late were daggers.

One poorly placed head-first dive off the raised floor at The Barn and he'll be out like Punto often is.
Good comparison, Matt. There is that vibe there, imo, also.
He did have a good day.
Scared about the rest fo the Big 10 after today ...
Mich State looked scary quick and athletic. Purdue is amped up. And those are just additional teams that look to be much-improved. The BT season will be a tough road for this Gopher team. They play .600 or .700 there, then we've got a story.

Colton Iverson hits the floor more than any big man I've ever seen. He's always scrambling and diving for loose balls. Do you get a Punto vibe from him too?
