Frank is forgetting one thing. BSU has never lost a North Star Cup game.

Is that right? I didn't realize that. If they are to keep that record intact they will need a better game today against St Cloud.
After a few pretty good showings, I was very disappointed in the effort the Gophers gave against BSU. I only got to see the last part of the game and didn't even notice Fasching on the ice. If the Gophers are to have any chance in a game this season he needs to be engaged and controlling the play like he is capable.

Some amazing numbers

Throughout the week leading up to the North Star College Cup, the Gophers had to field scores of questions about their growing stretch of woe against in-state rivals. Their inability to find any answers will keep that burden hanging over their heads, perhaps until next season.

Sunday’s 3-2 loss to Minnesota State Mankato left the Gophers 0-2 for the weekend and dropped them to 1-7 this season against other Minnesota teams. The game began with a costly mistake, when defenseman Jack Glover accidentally knocked the puck into his own net at 4 minutes, 4 seconds of the first period. It ended with frustration after the Mavericks’ Teddy Blueger scored on a power play, extending the Gophers’ misery as they lost for the 12th time in 13 games to a rival from within the state.

Their defeat in the North Star Cup consolation game at Xcel Energy Center came on the heels of Saturday’s 4-2 loss to Bemidji State. The No. 20 Gophers (13-12-0, 8-2-0 Big Ten) showed more energy against 19th-ranked MSU, but that couldn’t end a tournament losing streak that has grown to four games.

“It’s embarrassing,’’ said Gophers forward Justin Kloos, who had a goal and an assist Sunday. “I couldn’t feel more disappointed after this weekend, or more frustrated.

“We’re just collectively not getting the job done. There are no excuses. This stings a lot.’’

The Gophers finished the weekend with only two even-strength goals, both scored by Kloos’ line, and he was their most productive player with two goals and two assists. Coach Don Lucia said the Gophers have proved this season that they must score three or more to win, and their lack of firepower was their most glaring weakness.

Blueger was credited with the first goal for the Mavericks (14-9-5, 12-3-5 WCHA), which came at the end of a long shift in which the Gophers were pinned in their own end. Glover was behind goalie Eric Schierhorn and tried to clear a puck that was sliding across the crease, but he deflected it into the net.

Kloos tied the score late in the first period with a power-play goal. After C.J. Franklin restored the Mavericks’ lead by scoring on a five-on-three advantage, the Gophers got a two-man advantage early in the third period and pulled even on Connor Reilly’s goal. But a tripping penalty on Kloos gave MSU another power play — and Blueger slipped through the Gophers’ penalty kill to net the winner on a wrist shot from the slot.

“We just didn’t play hard enough, and that’s kind of what it came down to,” said Gophers forward Hudson Fasching, who leads the Gophers in scoring but finished the weekend without a point. “It’s getting to a point where it’s getting extremely frustrating [to lose to in-state teams].”

Fasching said the Gophers felt good entering the weekend after winning five in a row. But a poor practice Thursday foreshadowed a lack of focus, he said, something the team’s leaders must quickly correct.

“It’s disappointing, no question,” Lucia said. “Last year, we lost a couple of games [at the North Star Cup], and we were able to put it behind us and have a good run at the end of the year. Now we have to do the same.”

The thing that bothers me about their play in the North Star Cup is the way the last few years they have come out flat. The other teams in the state come out like they are playing in the Frozen Four and we play like it is an exhibition against the US developmental team. I am beginning to think it is time for tDon to go. His teams no longer play with any hustle or sense of urgency and often times top players seem to regress rather than improve under his watch.

Is it Broten/Stauber and Leo? I can't think of anyone deserving since them so it's gotta be a mistake.

I guess I could see Fasching when he is on the top of his game, but neither Kloos or Bristedt should be in the conversation as the top college player in the game today.

If they are on it, I'm gonna assume BSU, the Mavs, the Huskies and the Dawgs have maybe a dozen each?

I just tried to vote for the St. Cloud State goalie. But then it directed me to freaking Facebook.

I see there's a Huntsville player on the ballot. But no Bemidji players? What about Ward or Bitzer? Gotta be better than anyone on Huntsville.

I hate the way anti-social media has taken over things. I do not and will not ever go on facebook for anything.....

Minnesota fans caught a little break in the misery index today with two Gopher hockey wins! WooHoo! It doesn't take much to make me giddy these days.

The boys (sorry, didn't see the women) played pretty well. The 3rd goal was a thing of beauty. Tactical passing in the zone.

Now that they are back to playing B10 teams we look pretty good. Too bad they never seem to show the same effort against MN teams......
I have to believe the return of Kessel really boosted the ladies team for the stretch run.

Down to Penn State at Mariucci. Maybe I really can learn to hate these other Big 10 teams. Looks like a pretty good and lively crowd, surprisingly.

We tie it up with a shorteeee in the final minutes of the 2nd. Momentum on our side. I'd be pretty surprised if we don't take control of this thing in the 3rd. Penn State looks slow. They look like a football team on skates. Horrible unis don't help matters.

The MN teams are better than the B10 teams. Every one of them.

I wonder if she's really good enough to be on the roster right now? But you're right-it has to be an emotional boost. And in hockey, that can be the biggest thing. And it's the right thing to do to bring her back.

I never did hear why Menefee was booted off the team? We could use her offense in the stretch run. Too bad. Hope she's doing OK.

Gophers were very lucky to not give up the lead right away in the 3rd. Oh boy. Terrible turnover.

Bummer. Our go-ahead goal with 13 minutes left taken off the board because of offsides (upon review). Correct call. Damn.

Still a tie. We have dominated play since I tuned in. PSU has had some nice scoring chances scattered in too. Been very impressed with the Gophers goaltender. We should win this game if life was fair.

Oh man. We fall behind 4-3 with 4 minutes left

I hate Penn State. How are we losing to these lead boots?
