I saw that score and thought, boy that sure beats last seasons start when it took about 3 games to notch a single goal. Maybe Schierhorn will get a little better goal support this year. Sure would be nice to see the Gophers make their way back to the top where they belong.

MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) – Tyler Sheehy, who leads the Big Ten Conference in scoring after one week of play -- has been named the Big Ten First Star of the Week following the No. 8/9 Gopher Hockey program’s two-win weekend in Alaska.

A native of Burnsville, Minn., Sheehy totaled a league-best five points over the weekend (two goals, three assists), factored into both game winners and matched his career single-game bests for points, assists and goals.

The sophomore tallied three assists in Minnesota’s 6-0 victory over Alaska Anchorage on Friday night to open the season and then scored a pair of goals in Sunday’s 6-3 win over Alaska Fairbanks. Sheehy kicked off Sunday’s win with a short-handed goal – one of two in the game by the Maroon & Gold – and added an empty-net tally to seal the win.

This is the second time Sheehy has earned Big Ten weekly honors – he was also named the league’s First Star of the Week on Dec. 8, 2015.

The Maroon & Gold return to action with an exhibition game against the U.S. Under-18 Team at Mariucci Arena on Oct. 14 before the official regular-season home opener against St. Cloud State on Oct. 21

Gophers giving away a game tonight against St Cloud.....
Up 5-2 and they quit playing until the Huskies came all the way back to tie it.....terrible 3rd period.

And then Collins takes a stupid penalty in the OT to give them the PP and the lose.....

First game I got to watch and not impressed at all....another long year it looks like.

Watched every minute until we got up 5-2
Went to get ready for work
Came back and we were in OT
Had planned a post tonight saying ... "feels good that we may be on the right track"

NOPE.
We suck.

That's one of the downsides of having such good hockey programs for youngsters across the state. There are way too many good players that the U of M can't take them all, which means that the other state schools all get loaded with really good players too.

In other states without that kind of feeder system, pretty much all of the best in the state end up at one school (i.e. Wisconsin). We've got really good competition from all kinds of other schools in-state.

Yeah, I have to agree Lynn. It is pretty cool that there are 5 D1 hockey schools in the state and all 5 are in the top 20, with 3 in the top 10.

My happiness for this entire Saturday rests in the hands of the gophers hockey team.
Oh boy.

Currently 2-2 in the third period in St Cloud

The only good thing to come of yesterdays game is the fact that my 2nd favorite college hockey team is St Cloud. Not sure what to think about this years Gophers yet. For some reason Lucia just can't seem to get the right mix of players to come to the U any more. Never seems like a cohesive team playing together for a common cause, more like a bunch high end individuals doing their own thing.

A smart man I know alerted me to the fact that the Gophers hockey team is 1-14 in it's last 15 games vs in-state schools.
Is that enough admiring them, now?
Can we get back to actually, ya know, competing against them and stuff?
