Sweep up in Houghton.
4-1 tonight, Patterson with another solid effort, as we were out-shot. Kid can play net. So calm and collected.
Bjustad nets his first. (EN)
Hoefel with 4 on the weekend, and 7 for the season.

Sounds like the Gophers will no longer be in the WCHA soon.
That
Sucks.

I don't know about that. I always thought that Mich, Mich St and Ohio St should still be with Minn and Wisconsin

Spot-on from Teflon Don on Kangas.

Alex Kangas was the winning goalie in the Gophers' season opener on Oct. 8, beating Massachusetts.
That remained the senior's lone victory until Sunday. His record had plunged to 1-4, his goals-against average had soared to 4.47. He had not started a game since Nov. 5.
But Sunday, with Michigan in town for the College Hockey Showcase, coach Don Lucia turned to Kangas again.
And Kangas, who ranks third in program history in career saves and games for a goalie, was at his best. He stopped 36 shots as the 15th-ranked Gophers beat the No. 8 Wolverines 3-1 before an announced crowd of 9,292 at Mariucci Arena.
"It was a very good game on our part," Lucia said, "and it started with Alex. It is amazing how the penalty kill improves when your goalie plays real well."
Michigan was 0-for-4 on the power play. They had four shots on goal during a five-minute man advantage in the second period and didn't manage any on their other three power plays.
"[Kangas] was sharp Friday when he went in," Lucia said, referring to his 21 saves on 23 shots the last 2 1/2 periods in relief of Kent Patterson during a 5-2 loss to Michigan State.
"And this is the best he has looked all year. Our team was able to feed off that. We scored the first goal, and we played a good game from start to finish."
Kangas stopped Michigan's Dave Wohlberg on a breakaway midway through the third period and had several saves in succession on shots around the net in the last minute.
"When Alex is at his best," Lucia said, "there are no rebounds. He is swallowing pucks up and putting them into the corners.
"[Sunday] we saw that from him and Friday we saw that from him. It is probably really the first time all year we have seen that. That's a good sign for us."

All right Gophers, huge win on Friday night against #2 UMD at home. Lets back it up with another one tomorrow night. Great save by Patterson in the last minute preserves the W. Stay out of the box tomorrow, take it to them with a relentless forecheck, protect the puck and play tight D.

GO GOPHERS!!!!!

I had forgotten this rescheduled game was on. Turned it on just in time to see them take it into overtime.

Seem to be gelling in front of our eyes.
Pretty good weekend against one heckuva tough UMD squad.
At least we manned up on home ice, that has been a real puzzler, how poorly we play at home.

Gophers record vs current top 25 of the pairwise....

4-3-2.   Team is improving the Minnesota state series they outplayed the Mavericks the keeper just stood on his head.  Great response this weekend.

The classic will be critical with Union a top ten and Ferris St hovering around the top 25.  Hopefully Mich St stays out and the Gophers can take care of Bucky in Wiscy with 3/4 points.

Tough games on the road at the Ralph, UMD, Wis, and BSU while must take care of business at home against Mich Tech, AA and no worse than a split against Denver.

9-7-2  16 to go 18- 20 wins will put us in good position for the NCAAs.  It would be great to take it to the Sioux after the holiday break...get things rolling down the stretch.

Go Gophers!!!!

Good stuff Jason.
I'm starting to get a little geeked up for these guys.
Different feel right now.
This group has a little "scrap" to them.

I was in town for the exhibition against BC and they looked much smoother, better passing, OZone awareness and tighter defense.

Wehrs and Fairchild still drive me nuts but overall this team is an improvment over the past two seasons.  The frosh are getting better, comfortable as each week passes and Barriball/Cepis are solid uppercalssmen that give them some gritty leadership.  I think Matson is playing very consistently at least every game I have seen, moving his feet and winning the battles in the corners, giving effort which is vital from role players.

Goaltending, Patterson is winning the job but Kangas could still emerge, just need one to catch fire during the post season.

If they can get on a roll they might be able to get into the 3/4 position, tough to do with 4 very solid teams in front of them.

I could see watching a game with you.
You just said what I see.
Not a big Wehrs or Fairchild backer myself.
If they get Bariball to catch fire, and Kangas to return to form, and a couple young guys pitch in, we can make a little run.
And then we need to stick together and build for a 2-yar run. Get Budish back in the fold and ride that big boy.

SMF (or anyone), do you think the Don is earning himself another year? And I'm asking both about what you think and about what the AD thinks. I just have a hard time believing that Maturi wants to buy out another coach right now and throw more money at someone else, after the recent coaching carousel in other sports at the U.

Spot on Pete.
Maturi is praying as much about the hockey program as he is about others ... and what he is praying, is that everything returns to "norm" As you say... the U NEEDS the hockey program to re-establish some continuity.
And ... as a couple of us have said (hope it not just "hope") ... It seems things are looking up.
More of a "team" feeling right now, we simply have to work on that.
Budish has Potulney potential, as a rally-er of troops. Don has seemed less aloof and more involved lately in interviews, imo.
He cannot help but feel the pressure himself, I bet Maturi doesn't have to tell him. The "old guard" fans that file in and out of Mariucci (the last couple times I've gone) are beyond pissed, they are expecting better things, and they are expecting them soon. Hopefully Don is past any health issues and he can revitalize the career and the program, all in one last kick at the can.
I can't hate the guy, he brought some real joy to my life at the start of the '00s. We need that again, soon.
I think we find out more and more every year how vital Mike Guentzel was to this program. One helluva hockey mind.

Lucia is on the right track this season but will have to finish strong IMO.  The Gophers have to get back to contending and this season that means qualifying for the NCAAs.  Its a good crop of freshmen, Haula is a good player but what is impressing lately is the 3rd/4th lines, must have contributions from this group to win.

The holiday classic opens with Union, its a good team but one this program should handle on their own rink and a critical game in the pairwise. The Gophers have to travel to ND to start the second half of the WCHA, must play tough there to gain momentum.

Lucia is a heckuva coach, just had a tough run and did lose some top players to the pros, however, he must overcome this as all premiere programs do.

At the very least IMO Lucia needs to qualify for the NCAAs or its time to change.  Three years in a row without the NCAAs, I cant see that at the U for anyone.

I give Lucia this year and next to right the ship.  What he and his family went through with the health scare must have turned his whole world around.

The Gopher Sioux rivalry starts tonight in Grand Forks.

Security is boosted for this weekends game.

http://www.grandforksherald.com/event/article/id/189996/

Games are sold out......getting 2 to 3 times ticket face value for this weekend series.

Will it continue?
Since Penn State announced it was going to add Division I hockey in 2012, all signs have pointed to the formation of a Big Ten Hockey Conference.
If that happens, Minnesota and Wisconsin will leave the WCHA. Would that mean the end of the rivalry between the Sioux and Gophers?
"If the Big Ten happens, and that's a big if, we'll probably have an alliance with the WCHA teams," Lucia said. "It would be very easy for us to play four to five WCHA teams a year, along with other games. There would have to be a willingness on both sides."
