Last couple of years have been hard on die-hards who used to fill The Moochi.
last time I went, there was more grumbling going on there than at any game I've ever been to.
This is a team that should always be good. It gets the recruits it wants. It gets the attention. It gets the advantages. Just win, baby.
And they haven't been.

Yeah
Baby.
We are back.
THAT is what a Mn Gopher Hockey team is supposed to look like and play like.
UMD is outstanding, and will be a great defending champ.
For these kids to go in and play the champs in their rink and take all those punches? Outstanding.
Guentzel is the freaking man. What a bench, with Guentzel, The Don, and Potulney. Wow.
We finally!finally!finally! are picking the RIGHT blue-chippers. We are finally full of not only the tiny skilled guys, but also the bruisers you need to compete nightly in the league.
And finally finding a goalie is huge. Kid can play. This is a roster that will only keep getting better and better. Couldn't say that before.
But these are all elite players who are looking to get attached to something, and they couldn't have a better staff to learn from.
I haven't been this excited about a club since our last natl champ year. Rau is Broten-esque.
Buckle up.
Its gonna be a fun ride. There will be some bumps along the way, but we are back.

I especially liked this ...
There were 94 shots on net in the game and 25 penalties.
"It was a fast-paced game," Condon said, "but more than anything I thought there were bodies laying everywhere. Duluth tried to come out and tear us down physically and we answered it and even gave them a couple licks of our own."

UMD resorted (had to) ... to typical Sue Tactics, can't skate with all of them, so start the cheap shots, the assinine full-ice runs, the stick work ... and these young Gophers not only handled it, they dished it back. Usually Helgeson taking a dumb penalty for protecting the goalie would have kille dus, but I think last night it jelled us together. Mess with our G, you're gonna get pummeled.
I think thats what Potulney and Guentzel bring ... loved seeing how fired up Mike was on the bench, he was ready to rumble all night, and that is what this team has missed.
Teams like UND get their energy from their bench, and we have to match that.

Nicely put man!

Love Rau.  That kid is not only skilled, he's tenacious.  That's a combo we haven't had for a while.

I'm sorry that I missed the end of the game. I just watched the first period. I saw a lot of crisp passing, especially on the power play.

We probably won the game because of our specialties," Lucia said. "We only gave up the one [power-play goal] and scored three. And that is something we tried to emphasize."

One thing I can't anymore is Lapanta and Gorg.  It all seems so contrived.   You can almost a producer telling Lapanta "remember man, when the puck leaves the stick yell because it's probably a shot".

We'll see how much of a hornets nest we stirred up last night.
Either way, we head home with at least a  tough WCHA roadie split.

Gophers won again? They were losing 2-0 in the beginning of game. They are the antithesis of the Wild who seem to making the giving up two goal leads a habit.

They got outshot 50-16? Sounds like the goal tender had a lot to do with this win. Was Patterson good last year? I understand that he is a senior.

Last weekend he didn't give up a goal. He has been outstanding!

What an awesome roller-coaster ride that was.
Nothing has changed  ... we are sure looking like we will be getting back to where we belong.
The shot disparity was embarassing, but a little deceiving imo. I think you have to look at chances, which were much closer.
The Dawgs throw the puck on net at every opp, while we are much more precise.
Sure is nice to have a solid, steady guy in net like that tho. Always in position, always controlling rebounds. Steers a lot of things into the corners and out of trouble.
Great combo of size and skill, glad to hear they were not too high after a couple of really important wins in a tough place to play.
Duluth is incredibly potent, when it got to 5-2, they came at us like their hair was on fire, and almost caught us.
Just so glad we have climbed back into the mix at least. Should be a fun winter, watching these guys grow up together.
Not sure if I've seen a more potent PP this early in the year, couple really great point men distributing pucks perfectly right now. And finishers like Rau do not miss.

Yes.  He's the best keeper we've had in a LONG time.  Forget his name now but the last really good one we had was the kid from (Hibbing??)  who played for a year and then left the program because his sister got sick.

Travis Weber, who was probably on his way to becoming one of the greatest collegiate goalies ever.

On Directv, they just moved it to 675 (another of the FSN channels)
Think I wore out the remote going from 668 to 675.
Hockey over-heat.
Should have said something yesterday ... I heard they were going to do that.

Too bad word didn't get out, because that was a barn-burner.
Helluva job by the Gophs to respond when down 2-0, then to get 5 unanswered? Awesome.
Then ... at 5-2 with 5 min left ... it was Katy-bar-the-door firewagon stuff.
Crazy-good game.
They pulled their boy after getting to within one with 1:20 left, and came great guns ... the puck was everywhere, richocheting around like a Jed Clampett shooting exhibition.
Couple of our older guys were stupid in our zone, trying to be pretty about getting it out, and paid.
The motors on the Bulldog kids are incredible they kept coming in waves .... with about 1:30 left, we broke out on the 2-on-1, shoulda put it away, but Matson misses the corner after pulling Reiter out of position.
Gets to :10 left, and you think you can breathe ... nope ... they get one more throw-it-at-the-net and JT Brown juuuuuust misses tipping it in.
Patterson just acted like it was practice ... kid is smoooth as silk.
Great game. Two really powerful rosters duking it out. If that becomes a playoff match-up down the road .... whoa boy.

Someone told me it was on the Big Ten Network. I don't get that with my Directv.

Don Lucia, the Gophers hockey coach who won two national hockey championships but has had difficulty more recently even getting back to the national tournament, has been given a contract extension through the 2014-15 season, the school announced Wednesday.
Last week, Lucia said in a radio interview that he had signed a three-year contract extension, and that it was awaiting "a few signatures" before becoming official.
"Don is a championship-caliber coach and is deserving of this extension," said U director of athletics Joel Maturi. "He has led the University of Minnesota to two national titles and recently battled through a significant illness."
Lucia, 53, was gone much of the time for several weeks during the 2008-09 season due to sarcoidosis, an inflammation that affected a nerve on the left side of his face.
"He is now totally healthy and fully committed to Minnesota," Maturi added. "I believe Gopher hockey to be the premier program in the country, and Don is the right man to continue to lead our student-athletes."
Lucia won back-to-back national championships with Minnesota in 2002 and 2003. In 13 seasons at Minnesota, his record is 294-159-53. The Gophers have not qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the past three seasons.
The Gophers have won all four games so far this season, their best start since 2001-02.
"Our goal every year is for Minnesota to be a championship team, and we have been able to achieve the ultimate success twice since I have been here," Lucia said in a statement released by the school. "Some years we come closer to reaching our goals than others, but I am confident that we are headed in the right direction."

Lucia did not deserve an extension. In fact short of making a run in the NCAA, he should be fired after the season.
