Right on SMF. And I (and others) looked at our success against WCHA teams before joining the league and thought it would only get better. Unfortunately, we learned it's a little different when there's 4 points on the line every weekend.

And Matt, you're completely on about attendance too. If you're winning, people will come. I know I could get tickets to any game I want the rest of the season, but I'm not that excited to drop money to watch us get waxed by UND, SCSU, Minn. The novelty of the new building and new league are wearing off. I actually think we can compete well in the new league starting next year.

You guys know ... college hockey is a completely different monster
there are a ton of small schools who are POWERS
Look at the NCAAs once the playoffs start.
No ones a pushover, they talent is spread around pretty damn well.
Only so many scholarships at the big schools, and the rest are filled with guys pissed at the schools who didn;t offer to them ....
I think its why i love the gaem a this level so much .... you have to figure in
hate
jealousy
tradition
anger
Much more than in any other college sport, imo.

I think all these conferences will be fun and very competitive.
I've gotten over the pouting and am willing to move on.
I hope we will be able to see the reconfigured WCHA games.
I'll watch any hockey anytime anywhere.

Really good game tonight. Proud of the team after a rough first period. 2 disallowed goals (one legit) and we didn't let it get to us.

I'm perplexed.  At almost a 100% rate, I'll turn to FSN on a Friday or Saturday night and the sporting event I'm looking for is not on the main station.  How do they determine which game they show on the real station and what they show on Plus?  And, sometimes, what they DON'T SHOW AT ALL?

A few weeks ago they had the Wild on the real station, the Wolves on Plus, and the Gophers weren't televised.

Tonight they have the Wild on the real station and the Gophers on Plus.  At least I found the Gophers.  But are the ratings for a bad Wild team really better than the ratings for a #1 ranked Gophers team and #10 ranked (and WCHA-leading) St. Cloud State team facing off against each other?  I really can't believe that.  You put the Gophers game on the regular FSN, I just can't imagine it doesn't out-rate the Wild game.  Who is running this operation?

YES!!!  Big goal when we needed it 5-on-3.  If we don't score there, the place erupts and we're probably sunk.  Now let's get one more!!

Woot! Woot!
The Gopher train keeps rollin.
Big win in MadTown. Pack it all up and take it to Chicago, and get that one too.
Nice to see all the Gopher fans in the stands there.
One amazing powerplay. 3 for 3.
Talk about amazing depth ...when Nate Schmidts your 5th or 6th D .... wow.
Wiscys a superior defensive shut-down team ... and we still put up over 40 shots.  Nice. Very nice.
My oldest son is hanging out in Chicago, waiting for the outdoor game. I'm jealous as hell.

Yeah man, great win and we pretty much controlled the whole game. Even their, while finished very nicely, was a bit flukey.

Did I hear it right that they haven't scored a PP goal in WCHA play yet this year?

Your sons going to have a blast BTW ~~ super jealous there! Chicago, for all of it's annoying fans, is a hell of a city. Especially if you love to eat.

No kidding Jeff
He's been sending pics ... it appears its ALL bars and restaraunts.
Great places. They really liked Harry Carays.
I feel guilty ... he's doing what I did before him  .... taking females who know nothing about sports ... and forcing them to learn about, and love ... the games we love.

How the Hell is the WCHA allowing two of it's teams to play on the B10 Network? I would think the league would have thrown a hissy fit over that.

Do NOT like this game for our boys. The size of the rink along with the shitty ice is not built for our game. It neutralizes our natural skill guys a bit.

Wow
What an emotional rollercoaster, at slow speed.
Talk about an unfair advantage ... Wisconsin builds every one of hteir athletic teams specifically to play on a plowed field .... it paid off today.
Our pretty boys decided to get grreasy too late.
Has to be frustrating to play that way.
Clearly better. Clearly.
We'd wear the rink out in their end the first ten, then couldn't move on it, because of it, the other ten.

So glad you brought it up first, Jeff ..... Not impressed with Wilcox.
Not saying it was his fault, but he was not good today, and I'm not sure I trust him.
Rarely tested, and never ready when he was.
Horrible rebound control. Not sold on him. Has great numbers because of the D in front of him right now.

Still ..... great experience.

CHICAGO - During their two days in Chicago, the Gophers created an album of memories they will carry long after their college hockey careers. They enjoyed a team meal at a fine Italian restaurant, where they got to meet hockey legend Bobby Hull. They were treated royally by organizers of the Hockey City Classic and made program history with the first outdoor game in its modern era, playing in storied Soldier Field.
Everything felt perfect, they said -- except for the outcome. The No. 2 Gophers were unable to stick to a game plan that forced them out of their usual high-skill style, falling 3-2 to Wisconsin to split their WCHA series against the 18th-ranked Badgers. On the rough ice of an outdoor rink, Wisconsin (13-10-7, 10-7-7 WCHA) prevailed by keeping things simple.
That played into the Badgers' nature, allowing them to score three goals in quick succession in the second period. Goalie Joel Rumpel was given the game puck by his teammates for holding the Gophers (20-6-4, 12-6-4) at bay as they dominated the first period. The Badgers then took over by putting the puck on net, scoring three times in 3 minutes, 19 seconds.
Freshman defenseman Kevin Schulze of White Bear Lake scored from the left point, sending the puck bouncing past Gophers goalie Adam Wilcox at 13:03 of the second. Fellow blue-liner John Ramage banged a shot from the right point off the shin pad of Gophers defenseman Mike Reilly at 14:13, and Sean Little got loose in front of the net to slide in a rebound at 16:22.
The Gophers outshot Wisconsin 38-19 and mounted a rally with goals by Seth Ambroz and Zach Budish in the third. But straying from the only viable strategy sent them home feeling a little empty after a weekend they called a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
"It was a great outing for us," said Budish, who scored at 18:18 of the third with Wilcox pulled for a sixth skater. "But it was disappointing to lose. We got away from our game in the second period. Give Wisconsin credit. They went to the net and made plays."
No. 12 Notre Dame beat third-ranked Miami (Ohio) 2-1 in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader. Gophers coach Don Lucia saw his son Mario score the first goal for the Irish, who also got assists from Edina natives Anders Lee and Steven Fogarty. Attendance for the two games was announced at 52,051.
Most of the fans gathered on the east side of the stadium, warmed by a bright sun that glinted off Notre Dame's gold helmets. While the Irish and Miami had to contend with glare and shadows cast over portions of the rink, the entire ice surface fell under shade and the stadium lights were illuminated before the Gophers and Badgers started.
Lucia watched the first game from rinkside, getting a close-up look at the choppy ice. By the time he got behind the Gophers' bench in his throwback varsity jacket and newsboy cap, the temperature had cooled to 28 degrees, and the shade and the Chicago breeze made it feel colder.
The ice, he said, held up better for the Gophers and Badgers. Still, he and Wisconsin coach Mike Eaves both cautioned their players that it was unsuited for tape-to-tape passes and slick playmaking. That aided the Badgers, whose roster is built for a simple, disciplined game.
The Gophers outshot Wisconsin 15-6 in the opening period, testing Rumpel with eight close-range shots. They also failed to score on two power plays in the first 24 minutes, as Ramage speculated the ice "de-skilled" the nation's most effective power play.
"We didn't seem to be on our toes in the first period," said Eaves, whose Badgers are undefeated in three outdoor games since 2006.
"We seemed to be on our heels. [Rumpel's] performance in the first period allowed us to get our feet underneath us."
With Eaves urging them to put the puck on net in any way they could, Schulze and Ramage both flung long shots that benefited from odd bounces. Little secured position in front of the net to knock in the rebound of Jake McCabe's shot from the point, and Rumpel -- wearing a toque with a pompon atop his helmet -- kept the Gophers frustrated.
Ambroz poked in a rebound at 2:36 of the third to get the Gophers going, but Lucia said the outdoor ice made it challenging to come from behind.
"I thought we played a very good first period, then we got away from our game," he said.
"We started to try to make plays that weren't there under the conditions. We were going to have to get muck-and-grind goals, and we didn't get enough of them."

I actually felt a little sorry for Duluth tonight because I could empathize with their situation. Lost something like 7 games in a row and were -13 in the third period so even though they had fought like heck to tie it up they had to feel it was going to be a done deal to lose in the third period.

I empathize because it feels like my teams so often have that kind of pitiful history.

But I don't empathize enough to not celebrate the Gopher win. Go back out and do it again tomorrow boys.

Definitely looked like interference to me. I wonder what we could have done with a man advantage for that last 40 seconds, or whatever it was.

But coming out of the weekend with 3 out of 4 points is nice.

I disagree Lynn. No excuse for not getting 4 out of 4. They let an inferior team hang around in both games.

Yeah - I didn't actually mean that I was satisfied with that. We should have taken all four points, and done it decisively. Funny how we sometimes get an odd level of acceptability as a MN sports fan.
