Had a better game today, but have a long ways to go before we can even think about another run at a title. I was expecting a split this weekend, but was hoping for a better showing out of the Gophers.

Very true man.  We played better but have a long way to go.  That being said, that's a very good "University of Mn lite" team.

We may not be the best team in the nation but they aren't the 7th either.

Emotion rules these games, as usual.
Many of the gophers "recruits" lately have no feel for the anger they incite simply by slipping that jersey on.
They don't get it. They will, after a couple more beatings like that.
Said it many times before, you commit to wearing that sweater, you better hump up your game, because you will get everyone's best, every night.

B

A

Eutiful

Puck movement on that PP goal and Kloos buried a tough puck.  I sure hope Bruno and Yeo are at the game tonight.....They could learn a LOT from the Don.

Also, Wilcox could, most likely, start for the Wild

And, 3 minutes later, he stops a 2 on 0 break away with the nearest Gopher about 50 feet away

Still only 1-0 good guys after one.  Need to turn it up.  For some reason there's invisible rug on the left side of the blue line in the offensive zone.  Our D has tripped over it about 5 times and it yielded some nasty chances for them.

I heard Lou Nanne say the Gophers are head and shoulders better than any other team in the country. He said he'd be shocked if the Gophers do anything less than win it all this season.

I wouldn't say that.  Homerism there.  We are "'good" but we have warts for sure.

We are out shooting the number 15 team in the country 34-15. Nanne is typically honest in his assessments.

We look good, no doubt.  I just wouldn't say I'd be "shocked" if we didn't win it all.  I was shocked when we got routed by Union.  Won't make that mistake again.

The best game they have played this season so far. The young D look promising, but have plenty to work on still. Wilcox on top of his game last night. When he plays like that I sure wish the Wild had his rights, they could use him. The 4th line generated energy every time they were on the ice, which carried over to the whole bench. Overall a very fun game to watch.

Good stuff Frank.  We'll need to bring that same energy tonight.  We'll get a better ND team. They are super young so I'm guessing they were a bit intimidated last night.  If they connect on a few of those blatant TO's we had early, it would have been a much different game.

We need to tighten that up.  It's ok to try and pinch in to hold the zone but you have to make the play.  You can't swipe and miss completely.  If you don't get "some" of that puck, at least, you give up nasty 2 on 1's or breakaways.  Which, we saw last night.  We got lucky that they didn't punish us.

THIS

Best goalie we've ever had.
Won the game for us.
Yes, that sounds stupid when its 5-0, but ...
If he doesn't stone them early, we are in a dogfight all night.
Everyone else HOPES their tender plays well. We KNOW ours will.
Best goaltending I've ever seen in my Gopher years. By a longggg ways.
Our nat title teams would have never been scored on. Our goaltending was atrocious those years, and we STILL won. (an amazing accomplishment)
Go back and watch some of those "exciting" games ... they were only exciting because we had goalies who gave up goals on tricklers from the blue line.

Great thing is .. even after nice wins like that ... we have so much room to grow.
So many things to tighten up.
This staff recruits amazing talent, theres never any denying that. Getting it to mesh is where the real work happens.

You rate him better than Stauber? I was pretty young and didn't get a lot of games back then so i don't know much about him other than what i've read.

Stauber definitely was #2.
I shouldn't diss him, you are correct. Robbie WAS a very good goalie.
But this kid is something else. And I'm usually more prone to go with the old guy.

When you watch the chances they had ... 4 goals for them would not have been a bad game for a goalie.
He gave them nada

And ... the Wild should probably watch the Gophers offense if they want to know how to break through on a good goalie.
The side-to-side action they create is a Gopher staple.
Make good, big goalies move.

I've been in and on basically every ice sheet in Minnesota, and several in other states too ...
But theres NONE like Mariucci.
The size of that rink blows you away when you are at ice level. Its ridiculously big (and yes, I know the dimensions)
Just saying, there is an expansive feel about that place you get nowhere else.
And they recruit perfectly for it. Theres no room for lumbering out there. If you can skate, you love that place.
I love it when they use it to their advantage. Its literally like a pond, with no borders.
