That's right. I had forgotten that he McKinnied during the offseason.

What did you think today Lynn?
I think we have a chance to turn a corner.

We got a good one finally.

I honestly only watched about ten minutes of the game - and that was in increments of one minute here, two minutes there ...

So I can't give any kind of honest assessment. I'm glad to read here that adjustments were being made during the game and that we basically shut them down in the second half. For Kill's first game, against a staunch opponent on their turf, it looks like a thumbs up.

A lot of other teams played wussy non conference games against teams like Call of the Whippoorwill University and are pounding their chests because they gave a beat down - - - but the Gophers have just as much right to be proud of the close final in a game against a team like USC.

Kiffin may be the worst HC in football.  All the way down to Pop Warner.

There is no justification for going for 2 twice in the first quarter.  And, we had the ball at about our 40 will over a minute to go in the first half.  What does that bozo do?  Takes a TO for us hoping to get the ball back.  I forget the down and distance but it was something odd like 2nd and 6.  Not 3rd and 18 or anything radical.  His arrogance will cost him everything.

Let me see if I can find the details.  I was laughing the whole time and it almost came and bit him in the ass.  A late FG and they are cooked.  If they don't try and be all cute in the first we would have needed to drive the length of the field and scored a TD to beat them, with a true Frosh at QB.  That, would have had no chance of happening.

Way to compete Gophers. My first impression of the Gophers is similiar to that of the Vikes.....we have a much better coaching staff.

Worse than I thought.  We had no TO's.  Ball at our 42 with only  35 seconds to go.  Kiffin calls 2 TO's and we miss a chip shot from their 20.  Seriously?  WTH did he expect to happen as a positive for his team?  there was 35 seconds to go and it was first down Gophers.

It's 19-3 at home at that point.  The chances of a TO and getting points off it are asinine compared to the possibility of giving up cheap points in that situation.  Hell, if we make that FG and things remain the same.  We win.

It's like the text I got from my buddy who's and OSU fan.  It was something along the lines of "hey dude, nice.  you almost it pulled it off.  HUGE".   and he was serious.

Not sure what's more disheartening.  Being resigned to the fact that not getting  you ass handed to you on national TV is a positive or having other teams fans recognize that it's a virtual win for your team.

Is the Grey experient over with?

Please tell me you are kidding. Please.

Not at all. He is not a good passing QB. Way over rated. shortal looked twice as good and he has spent less time in college fb. Grey looked bad in spring game and no improvement today

Normally I'm not a fan of the dual QBing, but for some reason I hope they play both guys all year.  It is a nice changeup.  I read today where Kill said the head sets were not working in the first half and it kinda made Q look "silly".  His word, not mine.  I thought Gray lacked some pocket awareness.  At times, he didn't feel the pressure coming.  Hopefully that will come with more experience.

Fairly impressed with Shortell.  That was a big stage for true FR to get thrown into.

Heck no.

Honest to God Jim what is your osession with hating this kid. He was one of the most heavily recruited players in the country, has maintained a great attitutde despite getting jerked around in the clusterf***know as the Brewster era, was one of the few players who was in incredible physical condition for his first meeting with the new coach, has accepted the role of leader on every level from making sure guys are showing for conditioning to guys learning the playbook, to guys going to class to guys showing up for community service committments. He takes over a new system under new coaches with several new players on the road against a top opponent. He gets them through the initial uncertainty and by the 3rd Q has them moving, leads them to their first 10 points before getting injured. Shortell takes over an offense that has already found some rhythm, leads them to a TD and then throws an interception in the final minute and you are ready to annoint him as the starter.

What exactly is it about Gray that offends you so?

Yet he completed a higher percentage of his passes than Shortel and didn't get picked.

Whatever happened to Moses Aliipate?

He McKinnied himself. Alipate came to his first meeting with Kill grossly overweight and out of shape. By spring practice he was down to 280lbs and managed to get down to 265 by the scrimmage. He ran the 3rd team behind Grey and Parrish. His own father admitted that Moses needs to realize that he is going to have to work harder than he has ever had to work in his life to make it here. Enter Shortel and Alipate wound up with the choice of position switch or 4th string QB.

All and all I came away pleased, but unsurprised at yesterday's showing. I said that I expected them to be very competitve in the game and once they got through the awkwardness of starting over yet again, they played pretty well. Safe to say that they would have unraveled completely under Brew and lost by about 35. Brewster probably would have changed the system and offensive coordinators at half time.

Actually, it was but I'm sick of the moral ones

The team played well on a hostel road.  Something we never saw out of Brewster.  Thel way the first half went, Brewster's team would have lost that one 55-3.  I applaud Kill and his staff for adjusting correctly.  One thing that was a little frustrating (but I guess somewhat expected) was the way they were saying our D coord would sit back and watch the first half and game plan the 2nd based off of that.  I would have liked them to be more aggressive from the get go but again, I guess I can understand the thinking.

Agreed that Kiffin is just an awful coach. Thank god we have Kill and not him.

It would be crazy to pull Gray at this point. Great to see Shortell look so composed in the heat of battle, though; bodes well for down the road.

The constant adjustments and improvement throughout the game...when was the last time the Gophers or Vikes had a coach who could do that? Holtz and Grant?

Some teams (see Auburn) find a way to win games. The Gophers still need to learn how to win when the game is on the line. That might come soon.

Just bumping this up because I'd love to hear Jim's response. I'm still relatively new to the college football end of things so I want to hear both sides of this.

If I'm not mistaken, Jim is Adam Weber's uncle. Not sure of the Shortell relation.

I won't speak for Fargo as I think Gray should be the starting QB at this time.  But, NOT being new to college football, I'll chime in with a few cents related to this post.

First, similar kinds of things could have been said about 3 time captain Adam Weber, who seems to be hated by most on this board.

Also, Brewster gets slammed here all the time, and rightfully so for the most part.  But lets also get a few facts straight:
- Brewster was the guy who got Gray to come to Minnesota.  He got Gray over many other colleges and big name coaches (included Kill).  That seems to get lost.
- It wasn't Brewsters fault that Gray had to grayshirt (meaning he didn't play football for a year).
- Gray was the #2 QB from the day he stepped onto campus (I believe).  Again, under Brewster.  Now this year he's the #1 guy as a Junior.  What's wrong with this?
- If Brewster doesn't use him at WR, he's riding the bench.  Maybe he gets more reps at QB, but not nearly the snaps he saw as a starting WR.
- By all accounts, Gray has an NFL body and the talent.  The question is whether his best shot is at QB or WR.  If it's at QB, then he has 2 starting years to prove it.  If it's at WR, then WTF???  At least he's played there.....and that was Brewster.

First, similar kinds of things could have been said about 3 time captain Adam Weber, who seems to be hated by most on this board.

Weber was not hated by most. Weber was probably not given his due because he was Brew's guy and Brew was perceived as a bumbling moron of a coach. The frustration level was more along the lines of why is one of the most highly recruited playmakers in the country sitting on the bench in favor of Weber.

Also, Brewster gets slammed here all the time, and rightfully so for the most part.  But lets also get a few facts straight:
- Brewster was the guy who got Gray to come to Minnesota.  He got Gray over many other colleges and big name coaches (included Kill).  That seems to get lost.

This fact was never lost. In fact most gave Brew his due as a recruiter. The comon theme was if Brew could coach as well as he recruits we might have something. And let's clear a couple of things up on recruiting Gray.
1. Jerry Kill was never in competition to recruit Gray. He said they watched film of him and early on determined that a player of Gray's caliber was not going to play for a 1A school.
2. Brewster landed Gray with the promise of playing in the spread offense under Mike Dunbar that was a perfect match to his skill set. Once Gray was enroled, Brewster fired Dunbar and implemented a pro set offense that was more geared to a pocket passer.

- It wasn't Brewsters fault that Gray had to grayshirt (meaning he didn't play football for a year).

No, but it was Brewster's fault that he changed the offense every year and could never figure out how to utilize his best potential playmaker.

- Gray was the #2 QB from the day he stepped onto campus (I believe).  Again, under Brewster.  Now this year he's the #1 guy as a Junior.  What's wrong with this?

Nothing . Just like there is nothing wrong with giving Gray a good run at QB now.
- If Brewster doesn't use him at WR, he's riding the bench.  Maybe he gets more reps at QB, but not nearly the snaps he saw as a starting WR.

It also stunted his development as a QB. Limegrover has said the biggest challenge in developing Gray right now is that he really hasn't played QB in 3 years.
- By all accounts, Gray has an NFL body and the talent.  The question is whether his best shot is at QB or WR.  If it's at QB, then he has 2 starting years to prove it.  If it's at WR, then WTF???  At least he's played there.....and that was Brewster.

Where Gray plays should be determined solely by where he helps the Gophers win the most games. I really don't give a damn what position he plays in the NFL.

I'm not going to break it all down like you Tim, but Webber was not recruited by Brewster so why is he his guy?

Gray was recruited for a spread offens as a dual threat. By the time he got here Brewster had already changed offensive OC and a new system. In fact Webber didn't run as much after his 1st year.

In the next 2 years I saw enough of Gray behind center trying to pass that I knew it wouldn't work. Then during spring football game he was outplayed by an overweight QB.

If I was Kill I would go the the most senior QB also and say that he would get chance of being number #1. It has nothing to do with hate, it is I don't see the talent for him as QB. I would still take overweight Alipate 1st
