From this observer, it appears to me that he (Maturi) made a real gutsy call with his decision on Kill. Maybe there's always optimism with a new hire, and it awaits to be seen how he does. Nevertheless, I'm on board with this hire, right now.

The Gophers depth chart is apparently out for the USC game (as of 8/29).  A few interesting notes:

- Soph Malcolm Moulton is listed as the starting WR opposite of McKnight.  True Freshman Marcus Jones is 2nd team.  Brandon Green is, at best, 3rd team.

- Ryan Wynn is listed with Zach Mottla at Center.  Wynn must be less than 100%....

- Jimmy Gjere is #1 at right tackle.  Marek Lenkiewicz is 2nd team.

- RFR Ben Perry is the starter at LDE.  He's backed by KGM & Garin.

- Tinsley is ahead of Beal at MLB.

- Shady Salamon is #1 at SS.  James Manuel is listed with Chase Haviland as the backups.

- No mention of Josh Campion.  He must be injured??

Also Lamonte Edwards is listed #2 at tail back.
Kind of surprised Beal isn't with the first unit. The kid was probably the most heavily recruited high school player on the Gophers D.
I'm real happy for Shady Salamon. A real dedicated kid and an achiever in the classroom. Word is he really brings the kaboom now that he has switched to defense.

I heard a comment on the radio that the Gophers will not redshirt as many players this year as has been done in the past.

Excited about the opener.
Not expecting a win, but expecting some nice changes in how we approach things and handle adversity.
We need a good story. Make it be you, Mister Kill.

Not saying they will win, but Gophers have an advantage in having film on Trojans & they have no idea what Kill will be doing. They can guess by watching No. Ill film from last year but different personnel

Agreed, not expecting a win this weekend, but will be happy with a team that demonstrates it has a plan, sense of direction, and evidence that the players are buying in. I'll take the Gophers and the points; we can beat a 21 point spread, dammit!

Day-um, the rich got richer.
Wiscy got a special transfer (that they didn't even need)
Damn-near unbeatable at this point.

Yep.
Should not get beaten THAT bad, looking at how it went last year.
Player-levels shouldl be relatively the same as last year, and we are now led by a guy with a clue.
A loss by a touch or two will be understandable ... a blow-out will be disappointing.

Brendan Beal has a knee injury and will miss the USC game. According to the Pioneer Press it could be a severe injury.

The little tiny bit that I've watched I had big concerns about the clumsy handoffs. It seemed like so often, with Grey in the shotgun, two players would run in front of him at the same time to try to fool the defense, but it ended up in a ham handed handoff that ended up in a one yard gain. I hope they're working on smoothing that out a bit.

Other than that - to be hanging in there as they have - it's a good sign.

1st qtr:  As terrible as any Brewster game last year.  Downright awful!
2nd qtr: Slightly better, still very ugly (but still keeping it from becoming a blowout)
3rd qtr:  Some flashes, some nice plays.  Definitely an improvement.
4th qtr:  Competing right with USC.  Even outplaying them at times.

Love the improvement each quarter!

Are you kidding me? Did we actually hire a coaching staff that makes adjustments in-game?
Wow. Not a lot fo great stuff today, but I was totally geeked that we actually watched, changed the game-plan, and made adjustments.
We never did it, even in Mason's years. Just stand there, squint at the scoreboard and lament not having players.
CFB is about coaching  ... maybe more than any other major sport, imo.
Kiffin and his staff kicked our aqss in the first half, we adjusted and shut down every7thing they tried after that, well, not shut down, but at least changed it up.
I'm geeked up. Great drive by the freshman, stuff to write home about. Gray as good as any player they have.
I've got some hope for this team to at least approach .500.

The argument that this team would be a lot better with Gray at WR (where we're thin) is a very plausible one. I'm not arguing for the switch, but I get why some would. Plus Gray's best shot at the NFL is at WR, so you'd think he'd want to play there.

I see that point, but we need to focus on winning games now.
I put the ball in his hands as much as possible. QB is where he makes an impact on every play.
Damn nice back-up option we suddenly have tho.
Shortell looked fantastic, before the game-ending mistake. Love the size of the kid and the pocket presence.
Some GOOD decisions to make for a change.
USC isn't very good, but at least we are looking like we have a clue.
Fun to see Kiffin furious afterwards. Our D will need to improve drastically. Way too many open recievers (USC dropped some huge balls)
But at least athletically, we look like we are "getting there".
Would be so much fun to actually watch meaningful Gopher FB again.

Not at all. He is not a good passing QB. Way over rated. shortal looked twice as good and he has spent less time in college fb. Grey looked bad in spring game and no improvement today

Last I heard he was no longer being looked at as a QB.
They were working with him at TE in early August.
