Karl I predict Gray will be replaced sometime during the year

Gray has a cannon is a phenominal athlete, Limgrover says he picked up the offense faster than any QB he has had before, Kill loves his attitude and leadership. He will be the QB for 2 years.

They recruited him as a qb, but then they changed the offense to one that didn't serve him well to his strengths as a running quarterback. It sounds like the offense will suit him better, now.

I have the sense that everyone is on board with Jerry Kill as the head coach, now.

Saturday's scrimmage in TCF Bank Stadium was billed as the best chance for some barely-beyond-senior-prom Gophers to convince coach Jerry Kill they can play football with the veterans, and a handful of freshmen took full advantage. Tailback David Cobb announced his presence among a crowded field of Duane Bennett backups by bouncing off tacklers or simply outrunning them. Receiver Devin Crawford-Tufts flashed some pass-catching ability for a coaching staff that already craves his zero-to-60 speed.
And quarterback Max Shortell once again displayed a calm, opportunistic grasp of the offense -- not to mention surprising swiftness up the field -- that even the starter he's chasing noticed.
"He had his day," MarQueis Gray said of his about-to-turn-19 understudy, "and soon I'll have mine."
The Gophers are hoping that day is Sept. 3, a season-opening date at USC that gives Gray only 10 more practices to iron out kinks in the passing game. The quarterback made noticeable strides in game management and especially in handling snaps from center, nearly eliminating a nagging problem that kept recurring in a previous scrimmage five days earlier.
Gray dropped only one snap early on, and the exchanges were nearly flawless in the latter half of the scrimmage. "We did a great job of it today," he said.
But perhaps nobody did a better job of getting noticed than Cobb -- for reasons good and bad. Kill screamed at the freshman after a missed block on a two-point conversion attempt, but the Texan bounced back with a series of impressive runs. One was a burst to the right edge that Cobb took 62 yards to the end zone, outrunning defensive backs who had an angle on him at the end.
"Cobb's had enough tail-end chewings from me over the last two weeks, and he's still surviving," Kill said. "But he's had a lot of reps due to an injury [to redshirt freshman Donnell Kirkwood], and he's taken advantage of it."
Crawford-Tufts, a former state champion sprinter from Edina, made a couple of catches across the middle to make a positive impression. "He got hit a little bit and kind of waddled over to the sideline, [then] came back out there," Kill said. "He showed me some toughness, which I think [is] important."
So is running ability, which Shortell displayed with a nice bootleg run that ushered him into the secondary untouched. Gray's elusiveness as a tuck-and-run weapon was rarely used Saturday, probably far less than it will be against the Trojans. And the starting quarterback threw an occasional floater, as if indecisive.
"Now I'm thinking too much," Gray said. "I'm just trying to get the thinking out of the way and just go out and have fun."
A crowd of almost 1,000 seemed to have fun, particularly during special-teams work. A 46-yard field goal by Chris Hawthorne drew loud applause, and Dan Orseske's 60-yard punt earned even bigger cheers. "There was a roar when we punted the football," Kill said. "I don't know if that's good or bad."

Kill really is an "old school" football coach.

Hard not to be excited.

Thats what I get too.
Love all the "and then coach really let me have it"
Kids want it, they accept it, and they grow from it, when it comes from a guy they respect and want to win for.

Yup.

Doesn't coddle the kids, makes them work for and earn everything. Literally turning boys into men.

He's the type of guy who would never give out trophies for "participation".

FSN is doing the same thing for Gophers in Gopher Undercover as they did with the Wild in Becoming Wild.

Maybe it's just me but Gophers Uncovered seems like a Sid Hart production and Becoming Wild seems like HBO.

It would be nice if we could redshirt Shortell, but Kill has always maintained he will use a couple of QB's.  If that's the case, then it sure looks like Shortell is the second guy.  I'm alright with that if it's more than mop up duty.  I suppose if Gray develops into the QB he's capable of, then Shortell could redshirt in 2012.

Don't know about the scrimmage, but they can put a couple of freshman offensive linemen on that list.  Tommy Olson, by all accounts, has been impressive and should be at least 2nd team on the depth chart.  Also, Josh Campion was running with the 2nd team at multiple spots before injury.  I'd predict those two as the starting OG's in 2012.

Weber > Tebow

Bronco's QBs

As one highly knowledgeable member of the organization told me Monday, “If everything was totally equal, and this were a competition based only on performance at this camp, Tebow would probably be the fourth-string guy. Kyle [Orton] is far and away the best, and Tebow’s way behind [Brady] Quinn, too. And I’m telling you, Adam Weber is flat-out better right now.”

Yeah, but maybe you didn't hear that Tebow REALLY WANTS TO SUCCEED.

I find it really tough to dislike Tebow.

Doesn't mean I think he'll succeed as an NFL player (I don't and never have) but I WANT him to. He'd be great for the game, and he's a a guy that you almost have to cheer for IMO.

NFL owners give the coach they hire way too much power. Broncos owner hires Josh McDaniel and gives him the keys to the franchise. McDaniel drafts Tebow as his signature move and sets out to make him into the franchise QB. It is clear that Tebow as a NFL QB, is a project. McDaniel (who had player personnel power) gave Hillis to Cleveland as well as spectacularly whiffing on some CB’s he drafted early.

Broncos have to fire McDaniel and start over.

Wilf falls for Childress.
Childress trades up for Jackson and sets out to make him into his QB.
Childress quickly, or not so quickly I guess realizes that it’s not gonna work and he needs to save his job. Childress chases after Favre for 2 straight training camps. Wilf has to fire Childress after the Favre ship crashes in Season 2 and Childress waives Moss without telling anyone else.

Now Wilf has to start over with Frazier.

These owners have to hire a good, very good GM and give HIM the keys to the franchise.
Coaches should coach and nothing else, other than tell the GM I need 3-gap d-lineman for my system or zone blocking O-lineman for the offense I will be running.

Coaches should coach the players the GM gets him, not dictate the Draft process and fall for prospects at draft combines and scripted workouts. How in the world can a NFL coach properly evaluate college prospects AND coach a NFL team through a 16-game season?

Yep, don't dislike the kid either. He's a throwback hoot.
Doesn't mean hes worth a damn as a pro QB.
Just needs a night out with the boys or two.

Great post Stacey (as usual)
Great points.
Too much control. In the end, fi total success isn't reached, there's only one way out ... total overhaul. Not good.

Better polish the resume, Joel:

Q: What is Joel Maturi's status?

Kaler: Joel is in the same situation as all of my senior managers. I'm evaluating their role, their effectiveness. As we move into the fall, I'll be making judgments about all my senior managers, including Joel.

Hopefully, thats as "vote of confidence" as it gets. (and means he is on his way out)
Would love to see a new face in there. (altho his last hire appears to be his best)
