No ... he did not just go out of bounds, did he?

uh huh...

And then could've easily thrown a pick 6 - or been called for grounding...

No point accepting intentional grounding on fourth down, is there?

Is there no yardage penalty for intentional grounding in college football?

I guess my question is does the yardage get awarded in addition to the turnover or, if accepted, do you get a do-over from further back? If it's the later it would make no sense to accept it.

I'm not really a football guy, I don't know the answer to this.

Love the win - but to show where the program is, Mase beat the Miami (Ohio)s of the world 44-17.

Not in his first year. Plus there's more parity now than ever before.

Good points, panndder. I think the most encouraging thing is seeing Gray improve. He missed some throws, but he could be nasty late this year and next year.

Intentional grounding is never a do-over - its always a loss of down. And if there is no yardage penalty, then it would just be the exact same thing as an incomplete pass.

170 yards on the ground for a QB.   New Gophs record.
Broke my man Sandy Stephens mark from 1961.

Mase had his share of ugly wins against the MAC and teams like North Dakota.

Maybe one of you guys know the answer to this - Does the clock not stop on an out of bounds play until there's less than two minutes left? Last week, we burned a time out when New Mexico St. ran out of bounds, and I'm pretty sure Miami used one when Gray ran out with about 2.5 minutes left.

It was a good win, any win would be a good win right now. I think Coach Kill's call to go for it on 4th and 9 on the 35 at the end was questionable, I would have punted it and at worse made them go 80 yards. Our defense was getting carved at that point, giving them good field position could have really burned us. Gray won the game with his legs, IMO. We don't win without him yesterday. It was like what Mason said - most of those plays weren't blocked well, it was just a superior athlete making a great play. Problem is, his athleticism won't be as superior when we're playing B10 teams.

Kirkwood looked really good yesterday, and I thought the secondary improved to the point of being poor instead of atrocious. I was drinking the Kill KoolAid before the year, and I still think he's going to get us turned around. However, it's going to take longer than I was hoping for this summer. We'll be lucky to win 4 games this year, because our lines are going to get absolutely destroyed in league play.

Exact same thoughts drew.
I have been wondering about the out-of-bounds rules too, gets confusing to remember if CFB and NFL rules are now the same, or different.
I'm thinking the clock stops after an out-of-bounds play, only in the final 2 minutes of each half. Could be wrong tho.
I know there was some grumbling about how that would shorten up the college game a lot.
I think I commented on the play in question ... Gray stepped out while we were trying to run clock. Maybe it didn't matter, because it was outside two minutes.
I was puzzled by the 4th down attempt late myself, I know it was a risk to kick or punt, but like you say, the worst-case was making them go the full 80.
Didn't agree with what he did, but it worked (barely). Going for it shortly before that near mid-field was also a gamble, but turned out to be a huge factor.
You thought the same things I did ... Gray will not be this explosive against B10 defenses. We will need to develop another mode of attack.
And I too, have backed off on just how much Kill can do in the short-term here. It looks like it will take a good long time before we become solid in all 3 areas.
But I also feel he is the right guy to give some rope to... and let him run. He'll stay on top of our needs, and make us deeper and more athletic eventually, and thats what we need, especially with the new B10 schedule and addition of the Huskers.
Unfortunately, it has to be done in steps .... first you have to get competitive, to stay in ballgames against better opponents, then you have to start adding depth, then you can start implementing what type of systems will give you your best chance to compete at the highest level. Mason was so iin-tune with the running game, and had us at the highest level with that, but when you are that one-dimensional, you set your own ceiling. It looks to me like this staff wants to build a complete program. Whats another couple years, when we've already suffered so long.
At least it looks like a staff that will work its asses off, and thats what it takes.

Agreed on the coaching staff SMF. I have a lot of confidence in Kill, but the cupboard was more bare than I thought.

A good win even though they had to squeak by to get it.  I'll take it.

Miami Ohio, though a MAC team and a team a legitimate big ten needs to crush, is nevertheless not your typical non-conference pushover game.  It was a real challenge.  They were picked by many to win their conference.  I thought they were a much better team than New Mexico St. even though the Gophers lost that one.

Gophers played better, but still need to find some pass defense, or it's going to be a long year.  That's the bottom line.

I "think" the rule about OOB is this:

In the final 2 minutes the clock stops when the player goes out of bounds if he is moving horizontally and not vertically towards it.  As stupid as that sounds.  I had the same question a couple of years ago and that's the answer I got.

Hopefully that makes sense.  I've read it a couple times and it may not.  It does to me because I know what I'm trying to say

I believe the clock always stops when the ball carrier goes out of bounds.
- If greater than 2:00 remaining, then the clock starts on the officials signal (usually only a few seconds)
- If less than 2:00 minutes remaining, then the clock starts on the snap of the ball.

Some interesting items from Kill's weekly press conference on Tuesday

- Kill said he's had "about 20" seizures in the past six days.  And then saying it was "probably more."
"If you get the flu, you're a coach and you can't miss practice," "You have to find a way to get to practice. I missed two practices last week, and the reason I missed two practices is I was having seizures or I'd have been to practice. I guarantee you that. If I wasn't seizing, I'd have been to practice."
"I'm not an expert; I just deal with it," he said. "I got a lot of (chemicals) in there and am trying to work all that out. Seizure patients, they put you on different medications to keep you from seizing. Right now, that's what they're trying to do. I've been on medication for six years. But I've been to three different states, different people and different philosophies. If I would have stayed at one place, I probably wouldn't be in the position I'm in."

- Lamonte Edward to practice at linebacker, not sure if it will be permanent.  Could pull the redshirt from the Freshman (I guess he's talking about David Cobb).

- Michael Carter is dressing but has not played.  "Not quite good enough."  "No discipline problem, not wearing the "brown shirt", and not working on getting him bigger (adding more weight)."  "Maybe I expect more of him right now."

I guess Kill created a "Loafers" shirt that also has "I quit on my team". He has players that are late for practice and other minor infractions wear them. I guess Gray is wearing one
