I think that's basically the only goal they can realistically set each year. And to even accomplish that, they have to buy out mediocre programs like North Carolina and get them removed from our schedule. That's horrible.

Chaska lineman Dovich becomes Gophers first 2015 commitment

Is he still the only one? These announcement seem pretty slow coming in this summer. What's the goal this season? Win a bowl game, any bowl game?

They currently have 6 commits for 2015

Dovich, twin brother 3 stars Jacob and Julian Huff DB/LB from Bolingbrook IL, Ted Stieber 3 star OL from Akron OH, Nick Connelly 3 star OT from Red Wing MN, Demry Croft 3 star QB from Rockford IL.

Now they are just waiting to hear from the NCAA clearing house on Johnson's eligibility.

Do you mean Jeff Jones? I heard it's pretty doubtful he will see the field this year.

I like our RB corps though. Cobb is a pretty solid guy, and I'm excited to see how they use Edwards.

Yep, even if Jeff Jones is cleared to play the Gophers plan to red shirt him because they are deep at tailback, especially with Berkley Edwards ready to go. The big thing is to get him in school and acclimated so he will be ready for 2015. It avoids prep school or juco or anything else that opens him back up to recruiting or would cost him a year of eligibility.

Spurrier lays the smack down on lower-level teams like us today in a presser.
No reason to play us.
Ouch. Can't even argue, really.

Very true, but Spurrier is still a dick.

Predictions for the year?

I'd be thrilled if they got back to 8 wins, frankly -- same record as last year, but against a much tougher schedule, would represent a big improvement.

Really would like to see a win in one of the trophy games.

Also would like to not get embarrassed in a bowl game.

About what I was hoping for Dave.
Maybe upset a big boy.
But we HAVE to start winning crappy bowl games, for sure.

I think we can sneak out 9 but 7-8 is more probable. If we play well and stay healthy, I can see us getting wins:

East Illinois
Middle Tenn
TCU - I'll most likely be at this one
San Jose
NW
Purdue
Illini
Iowa
one of either Iowa/Neb. I think Iowa is more doable here as the Neb game is away.

I am still blown away by the fact that in the last 15 years, we beat Oregon/Alabama/Arkansas in CONSECUTIVE bowls.

Seems like eons ago
I'm assuming The Mason Years
Sure seems like we've blown a bunch of winnable ones lately.

Yep -- 2002-04. Managed to lose six straight after that.

Here's a fun one: the Gophers have losing records against only three Big 10 team.

Can you name them?

That's shocking

If you and I were betting today, you'd have the title to my farm by now.

I don't think our schedule is that much tougher this year. TCU is the big difference, we should be a dog in that game. OSU is in but Mich St is out. I could see us at 6-2 to start. The last 4 games will decide our season.

Totally agree on the bowl game. We really need to win one this year. Kill hasn't been good in bowls lately. Also no blowout losses...especially to border schools. Last year the only big scoreboard loss was to Michigan 42-13.

Doesn't it seem like a no brainer to say
OSU
Michigan
And maybe Michigan State?

But I can tell that's wrong.
I'm sure Bernie Bierman was something like 87-0 against all of them.

Penn State has to be one, because their history in the Big 10 doesn't go back to the olden days when the Gophers were good.

Nebraska has to be one.

I'll go with Michigan for the other one.

Wikipedia says the Gophers have a winning record against Penn State -- but it also says they have a 5-3 record against them, but they've played 13 times -- so something isn't right there. Might be four teams.
