My boys to 20th in the polls.  I made a joke earlier about them getting more win than the Vikes and better QB play.

I may be a soothsayer.

I can top that, they are #17 in the BCS

Another big game this weekend.  Northwestern will test our D.  Hopefully practicing against the spread will help.  They would always give Mason's teams fits.  It was also confirmed in the Strib that Decker is beat up.  We need to get him healthy.  You could tell something was bothering him on Saturday.

Man, when it goes good ...
I see Northwesterns QB and top RB are banged up.
And we get to face Iowa a week after their "big game of the year" against Penn State.
All this, on top of no Penn State or Mich State on the schedule this year.

Northwestern will not roll over for us.
I am glad we are taking every game as if it is our last.
We should. We've been so bad for so long, we can't take anything for granted.

Exactly, this game scares me as much as Purdue, did but for different reasons.  We may, not saying we are, but maybe getting in to "take a game for granted mentally" mode.  We need to bring it to them right from the get go.   We need to:

Get Decker involved early and often
More plays to Simmons and Tow-Arn in the middle of the field.  They've been open all year
Get some early stops on D and not let them control the clock with long, time consuming drives
No stupid TO's from Weber.  He's been good about that all year but every once in a while he still makes a doh pass.

what else?

Jeff, here is where I don't worry about taking games for granted. The way our schedule is set up there really isn't a game that will cause us to look past our current opponent. For the Gophers it's about winning the next game and staying at 1 loss and hoping either somebody upsets Penn State or Penn moves to #2 in the BCS. Either way Gopher Nation goes to Pasadena by virtue of going the longest without a Rose Bowl appearance.

I'm not sure if that is still there since they went to the BCS. I can still see them snub the Gophers to get a better draw in the Buckeyes

Nope that is still the Big Ten rule unless the Rose Bowl is designated as the BCS championship game that year. That won't be the case this year. If the Gophers stay at 1 loss and Penn either goes for the national championship or loses 1 game, the Gophers are in.

Even Brad's obnoxiousness couldn't kill the buzz of a Gopher Rose Bowl appearance for me.

True.
But USC would be over our heads. They're Top-3 in the country, imo.
I guess we'll see if we have to worry about that when the time comes.
The thought that we can even dream about that makes me all giddy.
The cards are stacked FOR us for a change, let's see how we handle that.
May be a good game here to re-establish some run-attack. We've kind of lost that air about us.
Awesome to finally be able to throw the ball consistently, but you have to stay true to your roots.
Let your O-line develop some identity.
All those down years, one thing stayed positive, our O-Line. It turned out players to the NFL, it consistently ran the ball, even against teams that killed us everywhere else.
We can change many things about us, but that's one thing we shouldn't.

Good stuff from Souhan on Brewster.
I don't mind the babble from a coach as much when he actually backs it up with action.
This guy is Wacker, with wins.
I like Souhans points on taking a lower salary to ensure getting better assistants, and on his chip-on-the-shoulder attitude.
I like that and pointed it out during the Illini win.
Early in the second half, it was typical Big-10 reffing, the crew that day was going to "get things right" by suddenly "helping" the favored team get back in charge of the game. If you don't think that happens in college football, you don't watch college football.
Anyway, when that crew started to turn momentum against the Gophers, our new coach did exactly what our old coaches would not do ....
He made a scene, he made sure the refs knew he was not going to stand still for being "jobbed".
The sideline mics caught quite a bit of it, as he let them have it. It was refreshing.
He simply stood up for his team and would not allow them to be pushed around or abused. It sure appeared to work, imo.
There will be plenty more of those days ahead, and he sure gives the impression that he'll be there fighting for his team every step of the way.

What's with this 2nd place mentality around here?  Hope for collapses from both PSU and OSU.  Hope for big upsets of the top Big 12 and SEC teams.  Win big the rest of the way out, and make it to the BCS title game.

Agreed.  He's the anti-Mason.  He use to just sit there with a look of "I smell a bad fart".  That use to piss me off royally.

Tells you how low the program had gotten.
I normally agree 100%, you know that, Matt.
I expect championships where others expect .500 seasons.

I don't wanna get Tampa Bay Rayed.  Sure, they are gonna be a good team for awhile.  But honestly?...they are in the same division as the Yankees and Red Sox....this might have been their one and only chance....and they were horrible in the World Series.  Too bad.  I can see something similar with the Gophers...we're in a conference with Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan...realistically, how many chances will we have?  This is our best shot.  Go out and do it this year.

Please keep this "feel good" train a-rollin' today boys.
I'll be sleeping, but I fully expect to read later about a nice little homecoming blowout of Northwestern.
The ESPN College Football Crew (much to their chagrin) had to talk about the best game in the Big 10 this weekend, and they spent most of the time apologizing that all there is ... is this MN/NW matchup.
They gave major props to Brewster and admitted he is qualified for Coach of the Year ... already.

I justed gotta say that I think the Goph's are awake now. Nice to see Decker get the TD on que after the announcers commented about no catches. C'mon defense. Yeah already got the ball back, in the middle of my post.

I have to admit, that last week's game against Purdue is the first game I have watched beginning to end, since , Mason led gophs beat Ohio State. I just couldn't take him after that and then I could only drive by view last year.

Bandwagon Tim.

Northwestern's defense looks pretty darn good.   And our own defense snapped out of their nap from the beginning of the game.   This looks to be a fairly low scoring game, which is fine as long as the Gophers score slightly more.

I am concerned that Purdue figured out something on how to slow the Gopher offense and it is becoming a blueprint, although NorthWestern has been pretty good this year.

I like how the Gophers have played up to their competition in big games.  But it looks like we thought this game was "in the bag" because of Northwestern's injuries.  So we're playing down to their level.  Not good.

Fake FG doesn't work.  Ouch.
