2-0. Nice group of young guys so far. Hope Smith isn't out long.

Good for him. Persevered through a rough patch. Others left.

Man, if the back throws it sooner they score. What a recovery and leap.

All -Pro's son indeed.

I've watched the replay several times now. The most amazing thing was Winfield's quickness. When the ball was released, Winfield was a yard out of the end zone and had totally bitten on the run. He still was able to instantly recover, get to the back of the end zone, locate the ball, snag it and come down in bounds. Wow.

Yes a pass thrown a split second earlier and with more zip would have been a TD, but that still showed some amazing athleticism by Winfield.

Heck of a game. D was great but this O stinks. Anex is better as an 18 YO true Frosh than Leidner was as a senior but he's still an 18 YO true Frosh. His WR's need to stop dropping balls early in the game. It sets a tone. The OLine was struggling too. That should be a staple of Gophers football. A beefy OLine. It's currently not.

This was a quality win. Fresno State is arguably the best of the Group of 5 teams in the country and an odds on favorite to play in New Years Day bowl game. Beating them with their top 2 RB out and a freshman heavy lineup bodes well. Ax has a lot to learn, but he completed over 60% against a good defense. Agree with Jeff that he is already better than Leidner was a senior. The O-Line does need work, but they have time to gel and there is a lot more depth than there was last year.

Winfield? We may not see a better interception in a game saving situation in college or pro football the rest of the year.

Agreed. It's going to have to be one heck of a play to top that.

recovery, leaping, and staying in bounds

all with the game on the line.

That 3rd down play Anexstad made in the last drive where he scrambled, threw off balance and fired a strike to Johnson on the sideline for a first down, Liedner couldn’t have made in a million years. I don’t know any recent Gopher qb who could.

It’s going to be a learning year for sure for him, but the dude has some skills. And a good attitude and demeanor too. Nothing seems to rattle him.

It stinks compared to a top team with experience players, but we have hope for a passing game for the first time in a long time. We were playing our 3rd and 4th string running backs. They are young but they have some talent and could grow into a team that does something special.

Was probably my biggest worry during that last debacle (other than still having some losers on the roster) ... losing that kid. Quality family, quality kid.

Yeap. I should have stated that different/better. They stink now but show a lot more potential than any non-Mason offense I've seen. I think maybe the play calling is being held back a bit right now too. That probably isn't helping them look good either.

Typical Zack Annexstad," the coach said. "He comes over to me right on the final drive, which is probably not the best time to come over to me, looks over to me and smiles 'isn't this fun?'"

Sources tell @TheAthleticMIN that Gophers star RB Rodney Smith will miss the rest of the season with a left knee injury. Tough blow for a very young team.

Figures. The one guy we can least afford to lose is of course the guy we lose.

Trying to figure out where he stands here.

He basically said he was really proud of the team for finding a way to win.

It's just so freaking predictable!!

When does Brooks come back?

This. Always this.

That said -- give this team a healthy Smith/Brooks, another year of maturation from Annexstad/WRs/OL, and a senior crew of Coughlin/Barber/Martin? This team could be special next year.

Not redshirt, but almost certainly a medical hardship waiver.

Like I said before. Fresno State is pretty good. This was not a gimme game by any stretch of the imagination.
