Thanks for clarifying that Karl. I gathered it was a former Big 10 defensive player and most likely a former Gopher.

As to the running game, I think it is both the line and the RBs. The replays showed a few instances where Bennett in particular failed to spot wide open running lanes. The commentator even pointed it out at one time and said "Bennett doesn't seem to run with good field vision".

I find it ironic that everyone always cracks on the Big 10 about speed, but I felt we had just as much, if not more, speed than Cal in that game. We got physically handled on both lines. A lot of people have been ripping on the OL, and rightfully so, but our DL was dominated in that game as well. Best was getting downfield 5 without being touched in the first half, then we had to load the box which opened up their play action game. As far as our OL, we could have APeterson back there and I don't know if he could put up a good game(probably exaggerating there!!)

Anyway, Brewster has recruited the speed and skill guys in here. We need to get some hogs on the lines and then I think we'll be in business. I hope Karl H is right and they just need some time to come together.

Good points drew, and it was kind of my point also .... we are improving our athleticism, and unfortunately, now we lack the hogs that were our bread-and-butter for a long time under Mason.
Hit the HS fields of Mn and Wisc and Iowa, thats where those guys came from.

It is weird seeing the Gophers with no running game.  It's the only thing Mason's teams could do.    Well, that and kick FG's.

We didn't have hogs under Mason, they were actually undersized, but the zone blocking helped make up for that

I see Northwestern is a 3 pt favorite for Sat

Hogs are O linemen to me.
And we always had a couple LARGE ones.
Yeah, a couple others were more-athletic specimens, but a couple certainly were not.
Point was, they were a solid, cohesive, well-trained unit.
This group is not ... yet.

I didn't. I thought Cal was clearly faster and more athletic. Don't get me wrong; I think this years Gophs has the most team speed I have seen in long time. I still think they are trying to improve it through recruiting.

I agree Tim.  It's getting better but we still have a long way to go before we can truly compete with the big boys.  We have a team now that should beat:

Northwestern
Michigan State
Indiana
Iowa
Illinios

We have a chance against Michigan and Wisconsin (I would  say it a wash giving it to the home team)

We can pull the upset of OSU and PSU.  It wouldn't be easy but we can do it.

To be honest, I see this a lot like Mason's teams.  Obviously they are built totally different but they will get about 7 wins and sneak out an upset or 2 along the way.  The way Brewster is recruiting that will change soon.

I like it a little better than Mason's because they didn't use the non conference schedule to fatten up their record on a bunch of human sacrifices. I think they are heading into the Big Ten schedule better prepared than they have been in a long time.

BTW, Cuse hasn't exactly embarrassed themselves after the Gophers. They lost 28-7 AT Penn State and beat Northwestern 37-34.

Air Force rebounded and beat New Mexico 37-13.

You're probably right in saying they still have more speed than we do. But I still think the biggest reason we lost the game isn't because they were running around us, it's because they manhandled us on the line of scrimmage. Like you guys have stated, if we want to become more of a running team we have to get a stud running back. That guy isn't on the roster right now, period.

I think we're moving in the right direction. Guys like Stoudermire, Allen, and Carpenter have speed and maybe they'll be able to put that to our advantage in B10 play.

Nice!  It looks like you pretty much nailed it as Brew is starting to do just that.  The 2009 recruiting class (current true freshmen) included (three) 3 star o-linemen:  Brooks Michel from Indiana and Ed Olson & Josh Campion from Minnesota.  I think Campion is grayshirting however due to an injury.

Not sure how much it really means, but when is the last time we recruited a 4 star offensive lineman?  None in my recent memory anyway.  Well.....say hello Jimmy Gjere, a local kid who is 4 star by both Rivals & Scout.  Throw in Matt Eggen & Zac Epping out of Wisconsin, plus Mark Lenkiewicz of Illinois.  All are three star recruits.  Thats your 2010 class so far....and if you're still thirsty for the kool-aid, we are currently on the short list of five star Seantrel Henderson and JuCo 4 star Roszell Gayden.  Both are local kids.  In fact, we had Gayden inked coming out of high school.  Hopefully we get him this time around also.

The 340 lb right juco tackle we have starting on the right side and Carufel were both 4 stars.

Great call on Carufel.  I forgot about him.  Not sure on Wills.  Maybe Brad has info on him but I'm seeing Rivals with 3 stars and Scout with 2 stars last year.  Can't even find him coming out of HS.

Gophers got screwed on that Decker catch. I have never seen officials confirm a call and then reverse themselves

Yeap, that was unreal Fargo.  They go to review, confirm the call on the field and then rereview and reverse it.

If we pull this out Weber needs to be better.  He is killing this team with ill timed throws this year.  Also, we need much more pressure up front.

I didn't realize how big of a kid MarQueis Gray is. Looking forward to eventually seeing what he can do throwing the ball.

Gophers still using that Swiss cheese defense. Wait until they start playing the better teams in the big 10

They came up big in the final 2 series but I agree Fargo.  I said after Cuse.  We still don't have the horses on D.

Another good win for the Gophers. A lot of "experts" were picking Northwestern to be a darkhorse in the B10 this year, and we went into their house and beat them. The most promising thing I saw was the pressure our D line put on at the end of the game and the emergence of an actual running game. I really liked what I saw out of Gray and Whaley. I think the 2 back rotation should be Bennett and Whaley, Eskridge just doesn't do it for me. I also hope Gray gets worked in the game more often. He's a weapon, and it's not like Weber is a great QB. I hope Weber pays all the rent wherever he and Decker live, because if it weren't for Decker, Weber would not be a starting QB.

Brandon Green had the play of the game breaking off that route on the 3rd and 8 and getting that first down by breaking a tackle. He's made some big catches in crunch time in this game and at Syracuse. I wish Weber would look at him more often.

I have a prediction: both Stoudermire and Harvin will house a KO return soon. They both give you the feeling they have a chance to take it all the way every time, and they've both seemed really close.

Pretty good defensive scheme all day, they often GET to the play okay, but often miss the first tackle.
The D is a work in progress that is improving.
I liked what I saw against Northwestern. Getting some good D-line pressure.
We are close in a lot of areas. 3rd-down conversions, pretty good kicking game.
The Big Ten is all out of whack again, Iowa smacks Penn State back to reality.
