ORIGINAL: Pete M. Here's what I love about what PJ has done. He got some grief for some of the stuff he's preached since he came here: "Attend class...every class." "Sit in the front two rows of class and wear a collared shirt--and we'll check up on you." "Be elite athletically, academically, socially, and spiritually." "Commit to something bigger than yourself." "Serve and give in the community." Then he goes out and starts randomly drug testing his players, beyond what his league requires; has crazy stuff like teaching his players how to relate to women, how to have date nights, how to do laundry; teaches them random history lessons on Sundays, etc. etc. And now look. He has (mostly) 3-star athletes who are beating 4- and 5-star talent by being completely disciplined (virtually no penalties), playing smart and focused within a defined offensive and defensive scheme, never giving up on a game or an opportunity, handling business against B1G pushovers, and being relentless under pressure in the game's biggest moments. Is there a coincidence between the first paragraph above and the second paragraph? Could it be that some of the stuff people mocked has all the while been developing high-character, selfless kids that respond better to adversity and high-pressure situations than less-disciplined, more self-focused (even though more talented) teams? Certainly seems that way to me. And then when I see Minnesota football having its highest GPA ever, completely invested in local hospitals/cancer centers, and having virtually no disciplinary issues after the Claeys fiasco? Yeah, maybe PJ is doing something right WAY beyond football. Here is the key to me Pete; his players are buying into it with every last dollar. Listen to them in interviews. The Fleckisms are rolling right off their toungues ... “There have been a lot of things we haven’t done in a while, so we are going to keep that same mentality,” Coughlin said. “Trust me when I tell you we are going to practice this week harder than we’ve ever practiced because we’ve got our eyes fixed on the goal, which is going 1-0 in the Iowa season, and we are going to take care of business.” The "change your best" mantra seems to be a big one with them, which is great. He's convinced these kids that rather than let the world them how good they can be, they tell world how good they can be. Like I said, they are buying in 100%. The best part of this whole thing is what guys like Brooks, Green, Smith, Winfield, Couglin, Johnson have been thru just in their short time here. Green and Winfield were dragged thru the mud on the Sexual Assault fiasco and later found innocent. Brooks, Smith, and Winfield have fought thru injuries. 3 coaches in 5 years. Damn straight we have some leaders on this team. We will see how far they can go but Penn State is a stacked and talented team along all lines and we beat them. Penn State vs Ohio State will tell us a ton. MN vs Iowa will also.
