I do believe that we could very well be a top 7 team in the country. After the top 2 or 3, I think there is a fair amount of parity. We beat a legit top 5 team with our best defensive player still on the sidelines. They next test is to stay in that tier. The Gophers need to show that they will avoid that let down after a big win because Iowa at home can be a landmine for the Gophers if they have a let down. The Gophers SHOULD be good enough to win these next 3 games, but WILL they play good enough to win these next 3 games?

Why, a couple of reasons.

#1. Because I want this season to end with a win. I'm all in on the Kool-Aid right now but my Kool-Aid isn't strong enough to make me think we could win the National Championship. We aren't ready to beat OSU or the best of the SEC yet, IMHO, but I'll take on a PAC 12 team. Winning the Rose Bowl would be awesome. Getting crushed in a CFP game would NOT be awesome.

#2. I've wanted to see the Gophers in the Rose Bowl my entire life.

#1 If we make the CFP we already did beat oSU. If we did that and Iowa and Wisconsin we are ready to take on the best of the SEC.
#2 While it would be awesome to be in and win the Rose Bowl I would prefer even losing in the CFP finals, because that means we beat another elite program to get there.

Could it be that some of the stuff people mocked has all the while been developing high-character, selfless kids that respond better to adversity and high-pressure situations than less-disciplined, more self-focused (even though more talented) teams? Certainly seems that way to me. And then when I see Minnesota football having its highest GPA ever, completely invested in local hospitals/cancer centers, and having virtually no disciplinary issues after the Claeys fiasco? Yeah, maybe PJ is doing something right WAY beyond football.

We are talking what we prefer. Not saying it is likely at all. Isn't it better going into the CFP undefeated with a win over oSU than with a loss or two going into the Rose Bowl?

Penn State’s Sean Clifford took aim at Gophers’ boat in profanity-laced pep talk

Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford made it clear how he feels about the Gophers, their mantra and the source of TCF Bank Stadium’s sold-out crowd before the Nittany Lions’ loss on Saturday.

A short snippet of a profanity-laced speech before pregame warmups, posted by Barstool Sports, Clifford told teammates, “(Expletive) their (expletive) boat” — a reference to the motivational phrase “Row the Boat” that coach P.J. Fleck brought to Minnesota when he was hired in January 2017.

“One, we’re the (expletive) show; everybody comes to see us, not for them,” Clifford is shown saying in the visitors’ tunnel before throwing three interceptions in a 31-26 loss.

Besides a pocket of blue and white in one corner of the stadium, a sea of maroon-clad fans was clearly present to see the then No. 17 Minnesota upset the fourth-ranked Nittany Lions, 31-26.


Clifford completed 23 of 43 passes for 340 yards, with one touchdown and three picks inside the Gophers’ red zone. Some Gophers players posted reactions to the video of Clifford.

“Interesting approach …” Minnesota defensive tackle Micah Dew-Treadway tweeted after the win.

“Clown,” U cornerback Coney Durr replied with an emoji of, yes, a clown face. And yes, he tagged it with Clifford’s Twitter handle.

Here is the key to me Pete; his players are buying into it with every last dollar. Listen to them in interviews. The Fleckisms are rolling right off their toungues ...

“There have been a lot of things we haven’t done in a while, so we are going to keep that same mentality,” Coughlin said. “Trust me when I tell you we are going to practice this week harder than we’ve ever practiced because we’ve got our eyes fixed on the goal, which is going 1-0 in the Iowa season, and we are going to take care of business.”

The "change your best" mantra seems to be a big one with them, which is great. He's convinced these kids that rather than let the world them how good they can be, they tell world how good they can be. Like I said, they are buying in 100%.
