Listened to the game on the radio while at work (Why I don't know.  That was painful.  Even rap music would have been slightly better!) Here's my $0.17.

- Did Wilhite play?  Didn't hear his name once.  Kirksey just a few times also.
- Sounded like the O-line did a great job pass blocking.  When was the last time that was said?!?  Not so good run blocking, which was surprising.
- Stoudermire may have found a home as a DB.
- Our kickers and punter suck.
- Purdue made a few plays here and there...Gophers didn't (until it was way too late).  Tougher to stomach since it was their young players, while our vets had too many "just misses".

I think getting Dungy involved would be huge. I think he already said he wouldn't take the job, but he knows what it takes and have him on search committee would help get a good replacement

He probably still has enough connections in football to already know who's a good hire.

what the $&#(*$&# are those WHITE helmets, and the ass-ugly white uni's they had on last week.

Pretty much unanimous by everyone.

Only the Gophs could mess up a great D play by having the kid fumble while trying to do an extension, have the ball hit the pylon and get ZERO out of it.

Got 52 yards, needed 54.  That play summed up the whole season right there.

They recruited him when they were running the spread offense since he was a running QB, then they switched back to a pro style offense. I think Allipate will be QB next year and they leave Gray at WR

At one point it looked like Weber was hurt on the sideline....and Alipate was the guy warming up to enter the game.

I don't know about that Ed, I think he can be an outstanding WR and have a better chance in the Pros then a running QB.

Agreed.  He does have a chance in the NFL as a WR.

Well, other than that INT Weber just threw. Weber is horrible.

Pretty much everyone's whipping boy.  Consider that Weber has a chance to be the best NFL QB the Gophers have EVER produced.  Food for though.  LOL

Karl Wilhite did play and it was his hitting the QB that ended up being a bogus roughing penalty. They said he hit with his helmet and he didn't

I thought there might be an announcement by now about Brewster. The game has been over for more than an hour, right?

Wouldn't that just require taking an NFL snap?

Even so, I can't see it happening.

Ed, that note you posted about Gopher football being Minnesota's "flagship program" was pretty funny. Since when?? Wouldn't "downwiththeship program" be more accurate?

Now the Dude is hanging on to the bottom of the plane ...

Gophers football coach Tim Brewster made it clear after Purdue’s walloping of Minnesota that he believes he will be fully employed and on the TCF Bank Stadium sidelines next Saturday

I am not sure why Spergon shows up as a Gopher QB. Best I can tell, he only played at SW Texas State. Anyone know the story?

Ok, thanks.  Thought they said it was Tinsley on the radio.

I believe he was a Gopher before transferring to the greener pastures of Southwest Texas State.

KARE 11 reported that it appears that Brewster has been fired, but that he'll stay on as head coach through the rest of the season.

That makes NO sense to me. What good is to be gained by keeping him on in a lame duck status? What might happen if they just boot him off - we'd lose a couple of games? I would assume one of the coordinators could fill in as head coach for the remainder of the season while they search for the gem who will turn this program around.

Yeah, I have to agree.  We are in a rather complicated spot.
- The University president will retire at the end of the year, but not before a new coach will be hired.  Hopefully the new person has a stronger commitment to football.
- The AD may or may not return for another year.  Again, does a coach want to accept the job knowing there will be a new AD who didn't hire him?
- Brewster stays the rest of the year.  Does that hurt recruiting? Or possibly help?  I can't believe much will happen on that front til the new guy is hired.  Don't really see the purpose of this.

If they are going to make a change then do it. Brewster was a risky hire and wasnt a step up from Mason, who did at least compete in the Big Ten. Frankly Maturi is the problem and must go, the hockey program is about as low as I can remember while the football team has regressed.

The mistake was Brewster never had proven anything, wasnt even a coordinator, great salesman though. Recruiting takes care of itself when you build a winning program. Brewster tried to build a national championship team overnight, cant be done, you have to walk before you run.

Minnesota must commit to defense and the run game and keep games close and hope for an occasional upset until you strengthen the depth/talent. This isnt a quick fix, the program has struggled for years and the gimmicks need to stop. Load up on OLINE/Dfense, pound the ball, keep games close and become competitive. This programs problem for years has been lack of defense and frankly why Mason lost his job as he ran the ball as well as anyone in the country.

IMO find a proven head coach with a defensive background and build the program instead of hoping for some quirky turnaround from a coach with zero head coaching experience.

Dont count the Gophers out of the Penn State game, the Lions are really struggling offensively while the defense is very banged up...this is a winnable game for the Gophers at home.

Brewster and Weber. Two guys who seem to be good people. Yet, I'm glad both are finally going to leave this program. The 2 are linked IMO. Brewster's faith in Weber is going to be his downfall. Weber is a decent enough athlete but he's terrible as a passer. You see more guys wide freaking open...and he just misses. It's weird that the one possible guy that could have saved Brewster for another year is now the leading WR and KO guy

I'm serious when I say this MG must be the most inaccurate passer in the history of football. I've never seen him throw it and he can't crack the lineup at QB, and that's with Weber. He must be horrible in practice. I mean, really...really.... horrible.

So Tim Brewster gets his head cut off - WHAT TOOK THEM SO LONG! This is a good move and I hope they now get a proven head coach.

Just updated on the Strib site:

quote:

The Gophers fired Tim Brewster as football coach Sunday morning. Co-offensive coordinator Jeff Horton will take over the head coaching duties for the season’s final five regular-season games.

The school has scheduled a news conference at 1 p.m.

“While I appreciate the passion and commitment that Coach Brewster has shown, it is clear that a change in the leadership of Gopher football is necessary,” Gophers Athletic Director Joel Maturi said in a statement released by the university. “We have high aspirations for our football program and we are not satisfied with its current direction. The results so far this season have been unacceptable and the program has simply not shown enough improvement over the past three and a half years to continue with the status quo.”

Brewster was 15-30 as Gophers’ coach, including 6-21 in the Big Ten. Brewster’s fate may have been decided when the Gophers lost nonconference games to South Dakota (41-38) and Northern Illinois (34-23).

Brewster was hired on January, 17, 2007, less than three weeks after the university fired Glen Mason after nine seasons as coach. Brewster was the NFL Denver Broncos tight ends coach in 2006, and had never been a professional or college head coach or coordinator.

Maturi admitted the risk involved in Brewster’s lack of previous high-level coaching experience.

“I realize that my neck’s on the line,’’ Maturi said on the day that Brewster was introduced to Gophers fans. Maturi admitted then that most people reading Brewster’s resume might have “put him in the ‘no’ pile, if you didn’t do your homework. But I did my homework.’’

It became immediately apparent that Brewster was given to hyperbole. At his opening press conference, he coined the phrase, “Gopher Nation’’ and pledged end the Gophers’ Rose Bowl drought, which is the longest in the Big Ten, dating to the 1961 season.

“We’re going to win the Big Ten championship and we’re going to take the Gopher Nation to Pasadena [site of the Rose Bowl],’’ Brewster said at his first press conference. “That’s my dream, that’s my goal and that’s my belief. It will happen here sooner rather than later.’’

Please do this right.
There are some hungry, young, talented coaches in the Midwest who would kill for this job, and who have built winning programs at smaller colleges, without all the advantages the U has.
Please do this right.

Is Maturi leaving too? Should be.

Much like the Webber/Brewster linkage(agree full on, Jeff) Maturi hooked up his cart to Brewster.

He needs to go, too. JDorn, you're right. Hockey/FB are in sad straights.

Scott, I have ZERO faith that Maturi will make the right choice.

Maybe, even if Maturi isn't gone, his input on the new coach will be minimized by the committee that is brought in to choose. Just a guess, since he DID tie his wagon to Brewster, as mentioned above.
