What isn't right is how the NFL uses up these players and discards them like trash at the end of their playing time. Sure, the players' union is partly to blame also for not negotiating real pensions. But the bottome line is that players are usually beat up and hurt when they get done.

While they have the chips in their hand they deserve to get every penny they can.

JC I don't think anyone disagrees that the players shouldn't get paid, we just don't like them signing long term contracts and then decide they made a mistake.

As for the Packers, they lost 2 of their big secondary players for at least 6 weeks and they still get all the love?

And so it begins: Bucs-Browns game Sunday will be blacked out in Tampa because it did not sellout.

Fargo, the day owners stop cutting players in the middle of long-term contracts I will agree with you.

Bingo.  Since the owners don't really have to honor the full contract.

They actually created a system where holdouts are more likely IMHO.  The players know they wont likely play out the entire contract.  So they keep holding out to get more guaranteed money every couple of years.

Heard on Mike and Mike this morning that Tom Brady is about to sign a big extention.

Well, I will admit I was wrong there.  Never thought the Pats would offer any aging superstar with declining skills a longterm high dollar deal.  Guess there is an exception to every rule.

He ain't that old, and it's up for argument as to whether his skills are declining. Last year was his first coming of a torn ACL, and he was still pretty good. You milk a franchise QB as long as you can.

My prediction for ROY will be Bradford. I wanted the Vikings to get him, but it was obvious they wouldn't move up that far.
I've read many times that he's not good enough and I realize the Rams OL could be a big detriment. but I'm picking him over Spiller.

EARLY ACTION

The Pats are not having much trouble with the Bengals.

Titans up early with a bomb from Young.

Steelers and Falcons locked in a battle - Matt Ryan off target so far.

- Looks like the Colts may have started that losing team of the SB hangover.

- Maybe Seattle is a surprise team this year ? The 49ers might surprise in not being that good.

Pretty much everything else went as I expected it. I thought the Packers would probably win easily over the Eagles, but that was assuming Vick wasn't going to take over at QB. I thought maybe Atlanta would win in Pittsburgh, but everything else went pretty much as expected.

I didn't expect the 49ers to be that good. Just the best in the West. That's probably still the case.

Peyton Manning threw a lot but did not have a good game.

As for Brady, the Bengals are not that good. We will learn more about Brady when he gets a real test.

CHICAGO -- Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford's status for the next game is uncertain after he left the season opener against Chicago with a right shoulder injury following a blindside sack by the Bears' Julius Peppers.

After the game, Peppers checked on Stafford and spoke to the quarterback.

"I just wanted to know how he was doing and what happened because he's a great young player and I don't want to see him out for the whole year," Peppers said. "I was just checking up on him seeing if he'll be back."

CLASSY

The Bengals had the 6th rated pass defense in 2009.

I watched Romo and DM tonight.
Neither are anywhere near Brady and Manning.

McNabb played very well. You give him Moss and Welker and see what he could do. Washington's WRs are horrible. They dropped at least 5 balls that were right in their hands.

McNabb's career compares very favorably with Elway and he is even getting Shanahan right at the same time. Now he needs Sharpe and Davis!

So much for the Bengals passing game being new and improved. Sure, Carson Palmer finished with 345 yards and two touchdowns in Cincinnati's 38-24 loss at New England, but it's much easier to throw the ball in the NFL when you're down 24-3 at the half and can just load it up in the final 30 minutes. When it mattered in the first half, the Bengals were bottled up and largely ineffective. On Cincinnati's first five possessions, it punted three times, lost a fumble, and Palmer threw a 59-yard yard pick-six to Patriots linebacker Gary Guyton.

Palmer may be the most overrated QB of the last decade. He had tons of talent around him at USC. He has had Pro Bowl talent his whole career at Cin. Yet he has yet to win a playoff game.

Nothing like garbage time yards to pad the stats

McNabb is on the downside of his career. He has been a good QB. He will never be compared to the likes of Brady, Manning, or Elway.

All in all, though, it was kind of a weird opening week of the NFL. It's like all of the teams were as rusty as we were. Strange playcalling, bad clock management, stupid decisions by coaches and players... It's like they all thought it was still pre-season.
