Two years ago, the Houston Astros constructed "Ground Control"—a built-from-scratch online database for the private use of the Astros front office. It is by all accounts a marvel, an easy-to-use interface giving executives instant access to player statistics, video, and communications with other front offices around baseball. All it needs, apparently, is a little better password protection.

Documents purportedly taken from Ground Control and showing 10 months' worth of the Astros' internal trade chatter have been posted online at Anonbin, a site where users can anonymously share hacked or leaked information. Found below, they contain the Astros front office's communications regarding trade overtures to and from other teams, as well as negotiations—a few of which actually led to trades. You will find heavy efforts to get a big haul for Bud Norris at last year's trade deadline (before settling for very little), pushes to acquire touted young talents like Dylan Bundy and Gregory Polanco, and even evidence the Astros rejected out of hand a blockbuster deal that could have brought them Giancarlo Stanton.

From a strict baseball perspective, all of this is really interesting just for the insight it offers into how baseball trades work on an operational level. As it turns out, it really isn't too different from your fantasy league, with front office types kicking around ideas, making preposterous demands, gossiping, and discussing various contingencies. If this happens, we'll be looking to do this, but then if this other thing happens, we'll be looking to do this. All of it is worth running through, but a few of the highlights are as follows:

The Miami Marlins seem to have been willing to trade Giancarlo Stanton for prospects Carlos Correa and George Springer. Granting that Correa is an absolute stud, that Springer has hit fabulously well since his callup earlier this year, and that they're under team control for years while Stanton is starting to get expensive, you still wonder if the Astros will end up kicking themselves over that one. Stanton has the 11th-highest isolated power in major league history for anyone with at least 1,000 at-bats, and is a Gold Glove-caliber outfielder as well; he's a generational talent, the kind you can't really overpay for. (Another way to look at this, of course, is that the embarrassing Marlins franchise was yet again willing to trade away an irreplaceable player so as to pocket some of its dole money.)

While vigorously shopping adequate pitcher Bud Norris last summer, the Astros came off a bit like that one guy in your fantasy league, asking after every team's top young players as if there were a real chance that, say, the Boston Red Sox were going to trade Xander Bogaerts for an okayish No. 3 starter. Nothing ventured, nothing gained and all that, but you wonder if the ultimately unimpressive return they got for Norris from the Baltimore Orioles had to do with them overplaying their hand a bit, especially as the flopsweating Pittsburgh Pirates seem to have been willing to discuss a variety of pretty good prospects.

The New York Yankees were apparently willing not only to eat $4.5 million of Ichiro Suzuki's $6.5 million salary, but to sentence Ichiro to spending perhaps his last year in the majors playing in front of empty Houston houses for the worst team in the majors. Poor Ichiro.

The data, as posted online, was split into two parts: the weeks leading up to last year's trade deadline, and the offseason. We don't know why this is the only info that's leaked thus far, though it's worth noting that Ground Control underwent major upgrades last summer—around the time of the earliest of these messages. As GM Jeff Luhnow said in a Houston Chronicle story on the database:

"We had a very bare-bones interface for a while. After the draft, the next critical milestone was the trade deadline, because we knew we were going to be trading players and we knew we wanted to have all our information organized in a way that would help."

We have a line in to someone in the Astros organization. We'll update if we hear back, but Jeff Passan has confirmed the authenticity of the documents with multiple MLB execs.

For ease of reading, we've made the entries chronological and filled in MLB executives' full names in place of initials and nicknames. Everything else is untouched.
Trade deadline

6/17/2013

[Giants assistant GM] Bobby Evans called [Houston AGM David Stearns] to check in on Norris. DS told BE that it's probably a little early for us to consider dealign Norris but are always willing to listen. DS said that when we do trade Norris we will likely be looking for quality over quantity.

6/26/2013

[Orioles GM Dan Duquette] called [Astros GM Jeff Luhnow] and expressed continued interest in Norris. JL said that for us to consider it at this point it would have to revolve around Bundy or Gaussman. DD said no on Gaussman but did not dismiss Bundy out of hand. DD said he ahd to talk to his doctors to really see what was going on.

6/28/2013

[Dan Duquette] said he would not do Bundy. Suggested Mike Wright and Pedro Strop

SF indicated to [Luhnow] that they would do Blackburn plus another piece but couldn't include Crick.

SF said they could not do Blackburn and Crick but that they would like to keep talking and keep in touch on Norris.

6/30/2013

PIT reached out to [Luhnow] and expressed interest in Norris.

7/19/2013

[Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos] texted [Luhnow] and asked what it would take for Norris. AA said Aaron Sanchez is off the table but might be willing to talk about anyone else.

7/20/2013

[Luhnow] told [Alex Anthopoulos] that we would consider Stroman +. AA said he had a bunch of balls in the air at once but would get back to JL.

7/21/2013

PIT said the wouldn't trade Taillion or Polanco. Might consider one of Glasnow, Heredia, or Hanson for Norris.

7/22/2013

[Luhnow] told [Phillies GM Ruben Amaro] that we would consider Aaron Altherr. RA said that seemded like a reasonable ask and he was still evaluating where he was. He would get back to us.

[Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski] and [Luhnow] texted. JL said taht we would do Norris = Veras for Castellanos and that we would consider Norris for Jake Thompson. DD said that SP was not a priority for them now but that they would consider those names and get back to us.

7/23/2013

DET said no to Thompson for Veras.

[Luhnow] offered Norris for Blackburn, Mejia, and Mella. SF said no.

7/24/2013

PIT asked for second names to go along with Glasnow, Heredia, Hanson for Norris

BOS offered Ryan Lavarnway or Deven Marrero for Norris. We said no.

[Luhnow] told [Red Sox GM Ben Cherington] that it would have to be one of Boegarts, Webster, Bradley, or Cecchini to get in the conversation at this point.

7/25/2013

[Ben Cherington] told [Luhnow] that right now they don't think they would consider those names but will let JL know if that changes.

[Pirates GM Neil Huntington] said he would not include Polanco in any Norris deal. [Luhnow] asked for Glasnow + Heredia or Glasnow + Kingham and NH said no. NH said he was willing to add to Heredia. NH said he would also consider adding to Heredia with pick 73. JL said that Glasnow had to be the headliner and we were looking for.

7/26/2013

[Nationals GM Mike] Rizzo called [Luhnow] to inquire on Harrell. JL told him we would still need a headliner like Giolito because we still value Harrell highly. Rizzo did not respond immediately.

[Dan Duquette] checked to see if we saw a Norris deal without Bundy. [Luhnow] said that was unlikely bud we'd be willing to add to Norris to get Bundy.

[Luhnow] talked to [Cardinals GM John Mozeliak] about STL trade deadline needs. Mo said he might have interest in Bedard but hadn't decided yet. Also said he might have interest in Norris but not at an elite prospect level (he included Wong, Martinez, Wacha, Taveras as elite guys)" [Mo = STL GM John Mozeliak]

7/28/2013

[Neil Huntington] offered Heredia + comp pick for Norris. [Luhnow] said no.

7/29/2013

[Ben Cherington] texted JL and said they couldn't include Boegarts, Cecchini, Webster, or Bradley but thought they had enough depth to still make an appealing package. JL wrote back and asked if they would consider a package around Barnes and Owens.

SF said they still had interest in Norris. [Luhnow] said they would have to include both Blackburn and Mejia to be competitive.

SF said they wouldn't include Mejia on top of Blackburn.

[Alex Anthopoulos] texted [Luhnow] and asked what a package around Stroman might look like. JL said Stoman + Gose would be in consideration.

[Luhnow] said we would consider Danry Vasquez. [Dave Dombrowski] got back to JL a few days later and said they'd do Vasquez. JL said to do it now we would have to add a minor piece like David Paulino. Given that Paulino is hurt, the deal was structured as a PTBNL with Emanuel Chavez as the other option

Offseason

10/17/2013

KC expressed "mild" interest in Jimmy Paredes as an inventory type player.

10/18/2013

TOR reached out on Jason Catro. They said their No. 1 priority this off season is to upgrade over Arrencibia. They want to get a sense for what the price would be on Castro.

[David Stearns] emailed [Royals assistant GM] Dean Taylor asking for either Christian Binford or Julio Pinto.

10/22/2013

[Rangers GM Jon Daniels] expressed interest in Castro and Singleton, said they were deep at pitching and middle infield.

KC said no to Binford or Pinto and responded with Ogando or Diekroeger. We said no. [Stearns] asked for Jack Lopez.

10/31/2013

I spoke with [White Sox GM Rick Hahn] today. They have definite high interest in Castro. He said they have four untouchable players - Sale, Quintana, Abreu and Garcia. Other than that, they would consider anything. He said they have had some inquiries about Santiago, Reed, Jones, and may consider moving Viciedo.

11/4/2013

[Stearns] spoke to [Angels AGM Matt Klentak]: LAA will look to supplement SP and RP. They are willing to deal from position player strength to fortify other areas. Four players they would consider dealing are Bourjos, Trumbo, Aybar, and Kendrick. DS told MK that of those four, we would likely have interest in Borjous down the r

[Stearns] spoke to [Indians AGM Mike Chernoff]: If Ubaldo accepts qualifiying offer, they will have no payroll flexibility and will stand pat. If Ubaldo declines, as they expect, they will be looking for a SP and left-handed bat, preferably in OF. They think their bullpen is fine. They have received calls on Santana

11/5/2013

COL is looking for a corner bat (they bid $63 on Abreu), a starter and bullpen help. They want to keep their core together and so would rather address their needs through free agency, but they may be pushed into trading Dexter Fowler. They have received inquiries (KC is one) and aren't ruling it out.

[Stearns] talked with [Dodgers director of baseball contracts] Alex Tamin: LAD is looking to acuire some back end SP depth and up the middle infield depth. They believe they have depth in the pen and would be willing to deal from it (AT mentioned Belisario and Guerra). LAD also has four OF for three spots and would be willing to talk about Crawford

11/7/2013

[Stearns] spoke to [Royals AGM] Dean Taylor: DT said their first priority is to keep their current SP in place. They would like to bring back Santana and Chen but don't know if that's possible. They expect their payroll to be at $85MM next year. They would also like to add a bat in RF.

11/8/2013

[Stearns] spoke to [Mets AGM] John Ricco: JR said that they have some pressure to get better next year but have some payroll flexibility to help them do that. They are looking for corner OF help, a veteran starter, and a little bullpen help. Overall they're looking to incrementally upgrade where they can.

11/12/2013

[Stearns] talked with [Giants VP of pro scouting] Jeremy Shelley. Jeremy asked me how we saw Harrell playing into our plans next year given he is out of options. I told him that right now Harrell is penciled in for our starting rotation. He said if he becomes expendable for us they would have interest

11/13/2013

[Braves AGM John Coppolella] reach out to [Astros director of pro scouting Kevin Goldstein] to ask if we had interest in Paul Janish.

[Alex Tamin] told [Stearns] that if we consider trading Barnes this off season we should let them know. They view him as a good reserve OF/depth piece.

[Alex Anthopoulos] said Lawrie was untouchable. Sounded like they might consider a smaller deal for Stroman but later in off season.

[Rick Hahn] asked [Luhnow] if Hector Santiago would entice us. JL said that was not enough for Castro. RH came back later in the day and asked if Bourjos (from LAA) would entice us in a Castro context?

11/15/2013

[Luhnow] told COL that we would be willing to structure a deal around Harrell

COL told [Luhnow] that they are listening on Fowler.

[Luhnow] talked to [Marlins GM Dan Jennings] and said we had interest in Stanton. DJ said he doesn't think he'll trade Stanton and the only deal he could think of from us that would work would be Springer and Correa. JL said that would not work. JL posited a deal around Cosart and Deshields.

11/22/2013

COL said they wouldn't do Harrell alone but asked if we would add. When [Luhnow] began to press they backed off on Harrell and didn't seem to have real interest. COL said they have multiple offers for Fowler. JL asked if they would be interested in any of our other pitchers.

[Luhnow] spoke with [Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik]. Jazk Z said he's getting a lot of calls from Clubs asking him if he can get Castro from us. Jack Z asked if we would do Ackley for Castro. JL said no, we wouldn't do that. Jack Z asked if there was someone he could add to Ackley. JL said he would take a look.

11/24/2013

COL offered Fowler and Ortega for Cosart and Barnes

[Yankees AGM Billy Eppler] reached out to [Stearns] to see if we had interest in Chris Stewart.

11/25/2013

COL interest in Harrell has dropped, not a factor at this point. They consider Barnes a nice 4th OF with good defense. They like both Lyles and Oberholtzer and would likely trade Fowler for both, but not for just one.

12/4/2013

[Athletics GM Billy Beane] offered [Luhnow] Anderson for two of Deshields, Peacock, Stassi.

[Padres] want Jackson or Gonzalez, pref in that order. I asked about Oramas and Roach and he said that was too rich. I told him we were looking for affordable pop at 1B and SP and he mentioned Blanks/Guzman/Medica as guys they would consider moving. He also said they possibly have Stultz available.

12/8/2013

SF reiterated interest in Harrell to [Luhnow]. Also said they would not discuss Belt.

12/9/2013

MIA said they need a 2B or 3B in exchange for Morrison. Inquired on Altuve and Dominguez. They also expressed interest in Folty, McCullers, and Carlos Perez.

12/16/2013

[Mets AGM Paul DePodesta] asked Jeff if we would consider Villar in a Murphy deal.

12/19/2013

[Luhnow] reached out to [Ben Cherington] on Carp. BC said that they likely value Carp more than other Clubs and would likely want real prospect value in return.

01/31/2014

[Nats GM Mike] Rizzo reached out and expressed interest in Corporan.

2/7/2014

[Luhnow] indicated we would consider Nate Karns. [Mike Rizzo] said they would not do Karns.

2/27/2014

[Luhnow] asked [Paul DePodesta] if they woudl consider Davis for Harrell + Sogard. PD said they value Davis higher for that. He said it appears they may value Davis higher than the market does, so they are comfortable hanging on to him.

3/10/2014

[Luhnow] spoke to [Jon Daniels] said at this point they are not looking to trade Moreland but will keep in mind we have interest. JD said they have interest in Stassi and Marwin Gonzalez if we are looking to move either.

03/18/14

Billy Eppler reached out to DS to say that they are still looking to move Ichiro. They would be willing to pay Ichiro down to 2M

Looks like Astros were victims here of a hack, which could have happened to any team. Long-term very few effects from this.

The Astros have been reaching out to folks around baseball apologizing for information that leaked on Deadspin today.

Number of people in the game weren't fans of the Astros front office before all this. This just added fuel to their fire.

Gotta love Joe Maddon ....
He went with his "Tommy Tutone" lineup against the Tigers.
Hilarious, and only HE would notice ....
The batting lineup according to position was
867-5309 (0 = DH)

Some teams just "get" it.
A's acquire Samardzija and Hammel from the Cubs.
See an opp, and GO FOR IT.

Johnny Damon spouts off that he can STILL hit better than half the guys in the league.
I totally agree.
One FA I wish we had chased and think we should still have playing.
He's (right now) better than any OF we have.
Whats that? He's not a part of our "future"? What current OFer is?

A philosophy the Twins simply do not understand ....
Billy Beane had to make this trade.

The Oakland A's might not be in this position a year from now, let alone three years or five or 10. The A's have been the best team in baseball in this season of parity, a season without a clear title favorite. But the A's had a flaw -- or the potential for one -- and Beane couldn't afford to let his team whither as the rotation slowly disintegrated.

So give him credit for having the guts to trade 20-year-old Double-A shortstop Addison Russell and Class A outfielder Billy McKinney to the Cubs for two-fifths of a championship rotation in Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel. Those two will join Scott Kazmir and Sonny Gray and whoever holds down the fifth spot to now give the A's maybe the best rotation in the American League to go with what has been the league's most potent offense.

The rotation leads the AL in ERA, a surprising development given the season-ending injuries to Jarrod Parker and A.J. Griffin in spring training, but has been progressively worse each month since a blistering April. Given that Gray and Jesse Chavez have never pitched a full season in a big league rotation and Kazmir hasn't pitched more than 158 innings since 2008, there was also concern about the rotation wearing down.

Now Beane has added two guys currently sporting ERAs under 3.00 with excellent peripherals. Yes, trading a cheap, team-controlled potential star such as Russell, a top-10 prospect entering the season, is antithetical to what small-market teams with limited resources normally do, but consider that Beane might not be able to keep this core together much longer.

Josh Donaldson will start to get expensive next year, and Brandon Moss will be due for a big raise. Jed Lowrie will a free agent after this season, and perhaps most problematic, Yoenis Cespedes will be a free agent after the 2015 season.

So, yes, I love the move to go for it now. Interestingly, I had proposed on Twitter on Thursday night the idea of trading Russell for David Price. Reaction was split, though I'd say a small majority favored the A's keeping Russell.

Such is the world we live in, where prospects are coveted like gold. Russell will likely develop into a nice player; when I talked to him in spring training he came across as a quiet but confident kid with a good head on his shoulders. Donaldson praised not just Russell's talent but also his work ethic. It certainly wasn't easy for Beane to trade his shortstop of the future.

But Beane is eyeing his own gold -- the kind you put in a World Series ring. And this trade clearly makes the A's the World Series favorite.

Some GMs get it, and some never will!
Sad, and we, The Fans, have to live with it!

Ryan would have trade for a couple of guys that USE to be good 3 or 4 years ago.

Padres win for the 2nd time this season with only 1 hit in the game:

The Padres are hitting .210 as a team this season.

Dick/Bert will be referring to them nightly soon, in their "we're not as bad as..." schtick.

That is the exact same thought that occurred to me as soon as I read that

What Ryan never understood is the Twins had a window of opportunity for making this kind of deal. When Mauer, Morneau, Torii and Johan were all in the fold and relatively cheap they needed to go for it. Ryan refused to "mortgage the future" at any cost. It's as simple as that.

Hmmmmm, a closing window.
Where have we seen this before?

The future of the Colorado Rockies appeared bright when Troy Tulowitzki (10 years, $157.75 million) and Carlos Gonzalez (seven years, $80 million) each signed contract extensions prior to the 2011 season.

At the time, the franchise was coming off two postseason appearances in the past four seasons, including a stunning and historic run to the World Series in 2007, and a strong foundation appeared to be in place with two legitimate All-Stars in the lineup and Ubaldo Jimenez emerging as one of the top pitchers in the National League.

Unfortunately, the results since haven't matched the expectations. Three losing seasons later — with a fourth well underway — the mood has significantly changed in Colorado's clubhouse, and the frustration that goes along with failing to meet personal — and at one time national — expectations appears to finally be catching up with the Rockies All-Star duo.

Mark Kiszla of the Denver Post independently spoke with both of Colorado's stars separately on Thursday, and unlike past interviews where they've each leaned on patience and optimism, their resolve appeared to be weakened as the reality sets in that their prime years are slipping away in a hopeless situation.

"In Todd Helton, there's someone who's easy to look at his career here and how it played out. I have the utmost respect for Todd, but at the same time, I don't want to be the next in line as somebody who was here for a long time and didn't have a chance to win every single year," said Tulowitzki, reviewing the 17 years Helton spent as the face of a franchise that never won a division title. "He played in a couple postseason games and went to one World Series. But that's not me. I want to be somewhere where there's a chance to be in the playoffs every single year."

That somewhere won't be Colorado. At least not in its current state. After missing their window to contend in 2011 and 2012, the Rockies have been stuck in baseball purgatory for the past two seasons, with a roster and minor league system that needs to be rebuilt and restocked, but with two stars they felt they could win with immediately with a few tweaks and lucky breaks along the way.

The tweaks haven't worked, and the breaks haven't come, which leaves the Rockies much closer to the NL West's basement than the free spending Los Angeles Dodgers and battled tested San Francisco Giants.

"What people need to understand about me is: Winning's my main priority," Tulowitzki said. "I've been around the game a little bit now, and I understand those years where we did win, how much more fun I had. And then there are years such as this."

Tulowitzki, 29, has veto rights should the Rockies approach him about a trade, but it's safe to assume he would waive those for a chance to join a winner.

As for Gonzalez, he's open to the possibility of being traded as well. In fact, it sounds like he's expecting to be the first big piece moved if and when Colorado moves forward with a rebuild.

"I think it's easier for me to deal with than Tulo, because Tulo has been here for his entire baseball life. I've already been traded twice," said Gonzalez, a member of the Arizona and Oakland organizations before making his Rockies debut in 2009. "The first time I got traded, it was hard. The second time, it was even harder. But I've learned. Once, I thought it was a team didn't love the way I played. Now, I know baseball is a business, and anything can happen from one day to another."

Rockies owner Dick Monfort is a glass half full guy, which drives Rockies fans mad. He's reluctant to not only rebuild, but move forward with in an entirely new direction. Rather than move on from general manager Dan O'Dowd, who's been with the team since 2000, he added a co-general manager in Bill Geivett. The too many cooks in the kitchen phrase immediately comes to mind, but the greater fear among fans and perhaps even Colorado's stars is that they have two men carrying out the same plan and not pushing each other to truly improve the franchise.

To put it mildly, the Rockies situation is messy, and one that can't be cleaned up overnight. Tough decisions will need to be made to improve, and the first of those tough decisions isn't which big star they'll trade first, but who will ultimately be tasked with making that decision.

The Orioles' two runs came on Xander Bogaert's two-out error in the third inning of a game being made up after Friday's game was rained out.
Bogaerts was booed then and later when he struck out three times in an 0-for-4 outing that left him hitless in 27 at-bats. A.J. Pierzynski, filling in at DH with David Ortiz away to attend his daughter's graduation, heard it from the fans with four infield pop outs.

Can you imagine the tears shed around here if the local boys were mistreated that way?
