I still don't think they have nearly enough, especially in the West, but man, they just added 3 of the best right handed power bats in the game to their OF. And Norris isn't exactly devoid of pop either from the right side.

Not sure I can remember such a dramatic transformation of an offense in one offseason. And it's not done yet.

Alonso is now their only LH bat in the entire starting lineup.

In a tragic end to a baseball life that once showed promise, Ryan Bolden, a former first-round pick of the Los Angeles Angels, was shot and killed Wednesday night.
Bolden was just 23, and hadn't played baseball since 2013. He was drafted out of Madison Central High School in Mississippi by the Angels as the 40th overall pick in the 2010 amateur draft. His life ended after an argument broke out in an apartment complex in College Park, Ga.

The altercation started — unfortunately enough — because of candy.

1:33pm: The Yankees have issued a press release announcing the completion of the deal.

12:51pm: It’s a done deal, according a source that spoke with Marc Carig of Newsday (via Twitter). The Marlins will receive Prado, Phelps, and cash in exchange for Eovaldi, Jones, and German.

12:31pm: Joel Sherman of the New York Post tweets that the Yankees will also receive right-hander Domingo German in the trade.

12:15pm: The Yankees and Marlins are on the verge of a deal that would sent Martin Prado to Miami, according to Jack Curry of the YES Network (on Twitter). Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald (on Twitter) hears that the deal would have Garrett Jones and Eovaldi going to New York for Prado and pitcher David Phelps.

The Padres have had discussions about trading for Cole Hamels, a San Diego native, with newly acquired Wil Myers part of the package, reports Ryan Lawrence of the Philadelphia Daily News. The Padres only finalized the trade for Myers on Friday.

Down with Goldy on the Padres:

Last baseball thing I want to mention is how great it is to see San Diego just say "F&%$ it" and go for it big time. They've constructed a completely new outfield of Matt Kemp, Justin Upton, and Wil Myers, acquired a new catcher in Derek Norris, and landed a young 3B in Will Middlebrooks. Considering the Padres were a historically horrible offense last year (their team total over/under in Vegas was frequently 2.5) replacing over half the lineup is not a bad idea, and they were able to do it without trading away any of their top 3 blue chip prospects (though they traded pretty much everyone else in the minors away). They also only had to ship out one of their starters, a team strength, and will go into next season with a mostly intact rotation. Two other signees, Josh Johnson and Brandon Morrow, have flashed a ton of talent but neither has had much success staying healthy - perfect signings to fill that #5 slot, really.

Of course, any time you take this kind of risk you are inviting disaster in countless ways. Kemp will be tasked with playing center field and by any metric or the eye test his body really isn't up to that any more. Myers had a really bad sophomore season and the Rays essentially totally gave up on him with questions about his work ethic. Norris is a big bat but is pretty horrendous defensively, and Middlebrooks has been underwhelming at best in his short career. I couldn't find anything bad to say about Upton.

This is all pessimism of course, since I'm a Minnesota fan, and I think these are fantastic risks for a team in need of a shot in the arm and I'd love the Twins to pursue a similar course once they think they're close to being a contender. They also now have an expendable Carlos Quentin, who can still hit the crap out of the ball when healthy - though he hasn't played more than 100 games since 2011 so who knows if he even can be healthy anymore. If he can get through the first half of the season or so healthy and hitting, expect the Padres to aggressively move him to an American League team since he's basically a born DH. It's a fun time to be a Padre fan. I hate them.

It seems nothing is beyond reality when it comes to concession offerings at the ballpark these days. Whether it’s a $25 corn dog from the Arizona Diamondbacks or the $40 hot dog that was available as part of the season opener in Australia, size (and wildness) abounds in baseball.

Now comes word that one minor league ballpark is considering a hot dog flavored cocktail.

Based on this mixologist recipe, loosely based off a Tom Collins, the Frank Collins would be a wild addition (and quite the conversation piece) in your luxury suite or ordered up at the concourse bar.

But, here’s what’s really cool. While the recipe at the ballpark is not being released, you can make the version posted at the link. Got your shopping list ready? Here you go:

1.5 oz gin (or any spirit you have)
1.5 oz frank consommé
3 dashes Worcestershire sauce
2 oz beer to top
hot dog spear (for garnish)

Add all but the beer to a shaker with ice, shake to chill and strain into a Collins glass over fresh ice. Top with beer and garnish with a hot dog spear that has been cooked or not. It doesn't matter.

Note: To make the frank consommé, cook several hot dogs in boiling water. Reserve the water.

He's gonna get screwed the most by the new 10 year limit (instead of 15). His trajectory points to a year 13-14 induction, like Blyleven. Unfortunately, that won't be an option for Raines.

Former Philadelphia Phillies closer Ryan Madson has agreed to a minor league contract with the Kansas City Royals that includes an invitation to major league spring training camp, the team announced Sunday.

Madson, 34, is 47-30 with a 3.59 ERA and 52 saves in eight career seasons with Philadelphia. He hasn't pitched in the major leagues since 2011 because of elbow problems.

Madson assumed the closer's job in Philadelphia from Brad Lidge in 2011 and saved 32 games, but a reported four-year, $44 million deal fell through and sparked a disagreement between Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. and Madson's former agent, Scott Boras.

The Phillies quickly changed course in November 2011 and signed Jonathan Papelbon to a four-year, $50 million deal.

Madson signed a one-year, $8.5 million contract with the Cincinnati Reds, but he underwent Tommy John surgery in spring training and missed the 2012 season. He made a failed comeback attempt with the Los Angeles Angels in 2013 and sat out the entire 2014 season.

Madson has two connections in the Kansas City front office. Jim Fregosi Jr., now a special assistant to Royals general manager Dayton Moore, was the scout who signed Madson out of the 1998 first-year player draft with the Phillies. Mike Arbuckle, currently a senior advisor in Kansas City, was Philadelphia's scouting director in 1998 when the Phillies selected Madson in the ninth round of the draft.

It's HOF day. Here's a sneak peek at 14 ballots. I'm surprised by Smoltz making almost all the ballots. Is his current position on MLB Network influencing voters? Based on these ballots, it's not looking good for Raines. Looks like Pedro, Johnson and Biggio are locks, with Smoltz looking close to a lock. That's a big class. I think it's been many decades since 4 guys were elected by the writers in the same year.

One thing to keep in mind, the people that are revealing their ballots for this article have strong ties to MLB.com and MLB Network. So I'm not sure Smoltz's support is gonna run as strong throughout the rest of the voters.

Edit: I just read Ed's/LEN's post on the General Twins thread. The last class of 4 for the HOF was in 1955.

Yep, 4's a lot. But it should be like 15 this year. There are that many guys on the ballot that deserve to be in. I'd vote for all of the following:

Randy Johnson
Pedro Martinez (arguably the top 2 pitchers in my lifetime IMO)
Tim Raines
John Smoltz
Craig Biggio
Mike Piazza
Jeff Bagwell
Barry Bonds (best player in my lifetime)
Roger Clemens
Curt Schilling
Edgar Martinez
Jeff Kent
Alan Trammell
Mark McGwire

McGriff/Mussina/Sheffield/Walker all barely miss the cut for me I think, though I could be swayed on any of them.

I agree on the latter, not on the former. Rice definitely didn't deserve in. Ballpark, shorter career, etc. But ALL of the above guys are way, way better than Rice IMO.

And Matt, can't agree. I like Morris (though wouldn't vote for him for the HOF) but Smoltz was a much better pitcher than him IMO. I don't think Morris deserves in just for one game. As I've said before, that moment is still commemorated in the HOF as is. He doesn't need a plaque for people to remember that.

Jack Morris ERA+ 105

Smoltz K rate 8.0: 3084 for his career, in a tougher era
Morris K rate 5.8: 2478 for his career

And I hate wins for pitchers, but Morris only had 41 more wins than Smoltz despite 350+ more innings and Smoltz being a closer for many years.
