Damn...wish we could have given Mauer away for Tulo and prospects.

Mauer, Berrios, Meyer, Tonkin for Tulo...would have done that one for sure.

Jose Reyes in the deal. I guess that's how they make it work. He's due a LOT of money too. So the Jays don't take on TOO much extra. Still, a little crazy.

From Tulow's end; you go from Denver, one of America's great cities, to Toronto (that's in Canada, or so I'm told). That is a....less than ideal tradeoff.

For this year only, that deal has to scare you a bit, Pete.

Toronto is a very nice city. You should visit there sometime.

I have. It's not horrible. But it's not close to Denver IMO.

I think this was bait for me. I prefer Toronto to Denver. By a mile.

We apparently could never travel together, Matt.

I hope Matt and Trek are right. I'll be visiting the Toronto and Niagara area in a couple weeks.

Let me know how it goes, Steve. I think we talked about that; I'm heading there myself in mid-September for a few days.

Top 5 North American city.

Try Brasa Brazilian Steakhouse in Niagara Falls (Canadian side).

Get the ribs at Baton Rouge Restaurant near the CN Tower.

Gotta think the Rox are going to try and flip Reyes now.

Due $22 million each of the next two seasons, plus a $4 million buyout on a $22 million option for 2018

..and Billy Beane is just giving his players away.

Clippard and Kazmir...could have done better than what he did.

He's jumped the shark.

I wonder if he just did Kaz a solid and sent him home.

Maybe when he signed on with the A's last year Beane and Kazmir and his agent had a good relationship and told them he'd do right by him if the A's went south during the contract.
which they did this season

Now the Royals get Zobrist.  TRyan - is that dude even alive yet?

There is a difference between where the Royals are and where the Twins are in preparing for the playoffs. The Royals are preparing for playoff series, as they will not be a wildcard. The Twins best hope is a 1-game wildcard game. Sure, it would be great to get in that wildcard game. But it would also suck to lose it after trading a quality prospect. I fear TR will get crazy and trade Kepler for a reliever.

Looks like this Manea guy the Royals gave up can really bring it from the left side. Maybe they traded away too much in this deal.

I would have really liked to have been a fly on the wall in the Clippard deal. Sandy Alderson vs. his pupil Billy Beane. Had to be an interesting negotiation.

Zobrist is a great fit for the Royals, because they can play him in LF until Gordon gets back, then shuffle him to 2b or UTIL. That team is built very well, especially now that they have Cueto.

Beane got commensurate value in that trade.

Good swap from both perspectives.

Stacey, were you not a fan of the other 2 deals? I liked their haul in both, considering the Kazmir/Clippard rental status.

Nah, especially the Kazmir one.

Should have gotten more. He is a key piece for a team making a run. Could have squeezed a bit more from some other club IMO.

Clippard, getting a potential #4 SP I guess is a worthwhile lottery ticket but and closer to value but...still think a bit more could have been out there right at the last minute.

According to Barry Svrluga of the Washington Post, the Nationals are nearing a deal for Jonathan Papelbon. Papelbon has said that he won't waive his no-trade clause unless he gets to remain a closer, so he's presumably going to push Drew Storen out of the ninth-inning role in Washington.

TR likes this guy. Tried to sign him once as a FA.

The Royals dfa'd Joe Blanton to make room for Johnny Cueto.

What would prevent the Nationals from telling Papelbon he'll be the closer, and then not pitching him in the 9th? Closer is not a position. Papelbon is one of the most annoying sport characters I can recall in my lifetime.
