Adrian Beltre with a big game tonight. Up to around 2700 career hits now. Add in is defense and he can start working on his HOF acceptance speech already. He is a lock.

Adrian Beltre is over 80 career WAR. Only five third basemen in history—six if you classify A-Rod at 3B—have more. He's a Hall of Famer.

Wasn't he suspended for steroids at some point?

No.

Anyone just miss the heck out of AJ Pierzynski? I just saw the video of the pitch last night that bounced five feet in front of the plate, and he caught it on a bounce and tried to frame it for a strike. The guy we unceremoniously dumped when Mauer came up is still catching after all these years. And still hitting game winning HR's. Wish like heck he'd have accepted Ryan's two year deal.

Late blow out of the Red Sox. Love it.

The Jays get two guys suspended, because the Royales were dicks.
Sounds about right. The new MLB poster boys who do no wrong.

Guerra is back in the central

The Indians announced that they have claimed right-hander Deolis Guerra off waivers from the Pirates and designated lefty Michael Roth for assignment.

The Nationals have shifted veteran righty Doug Fister to the bullpen, manager Matt Williams told reporters after today’s game, Dan Kolko of MASNsports.com among them (on Twitter). Impressive rookie Joe Ross will take his regular spot in the rotation.

The move is surprising to see, in some respects, but makes sense as the evidence on both pitchers has continued to accumulate. Fister has dealt with injuries, lost velocity, and a continued decline in his ability to generate strikeouts.

All told, he owns a 4.60 ERA over 86 innings, with 5.0 K/9 against 1.9 BB/9 with an uncharacteristically low 42.0% groundball rate. Those are his worst results as a big leaguer, and ERA estimators suggest that his earned run average reflects his performance this season.

That would make him the #3 starter with the Twins. Ryan better give up 3 or 4 minor leaguers for him.

Or Loshe could make a return for 2-3 guys, right Ryan, you baseball genius?!

The Brewers have shifted struggling veteran Kyle Lohse to the bullpen, reports MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy. McCalvy says that Lohse handled the disheartening news well, and while the right-hander didn’t go into detail, it “sounds like” the Brewers are trying to trade him. GM Doug Melvin did discuss Lohse with other teams prior to the non-waiver trade deadline, but nothing materialized, he adds. Via McCalvy, Lohse had the following to say about his move to a relief role:

“That’s where I’ll be residing for the time being, and we’ll just kind of see what options there are, and we’ll go from there. All that stuff is out of my hands, but [the Brewers have] been good to me. Stuck through a pretty tough year and gave me the opportunity to go out there every five days until now. It didn’t work out.”

The 36-year-old Lohse is in the final season of a three-year, $33MM contract signed with the Brewers in Spring Training of the 2013 season. Lohse proved to be a very good value in the first two seasons of the pact, tossing 397 innings with a 3.45 ERA, 6.0 K/9, 1.8 BB/9 and a 40.1 percent ground-ball rate. Fangraphs and Baseball-Reference both agreed that he was worth roughly five to six wins over the first two years of the deal, with the latter being a bit more bullish.

The 2015 season, though, has been an entirely different story. Lohse has pitched to a 6.31 ERA in 124 innings this season. He leads the National League in both hits allowed (152) and earned runs (87). The 25 homers he’s yielded are already just three shy of his career-worst 28, despite the fact that he pitched 194 innings when he allowed 28 all the way back in 2004.

8:21pm: Texas will pay $1.5MM of Napoli’s salary, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com tweets, with Boston keeping the rest.

7:06pm: The deal is for Napoli and cash in exchange for a player to be named later (or cash considerations), the clubs have announced.

6:14pm: The Rangers have agreed to acquire first baseman Mike Napoli from the Red Sox, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports on Twitter. Boston pulled Napoli from its lineup at the last minute, leading to speculation of a deal that appears to have come to fruition.

Texas continues to be a fascinating to team to watch. The team added Cole Hamels at the deadline, seemingly more for his future value, while shopping (but not dealing) veteran Yovani Gallardo. Now, after a solid run coming out of the deadline, Texas is just five-and-a-half back in the division and 2.5 games out of Wild Card contention.

Napoli represents a right-handed power bat to plug into a heavily left-handed lineup. The club has utilized Prince Fielder and Mitch Moreland at first base and DH for much of the season, but can now deploy Napoli at both positions as well. Unsurprisingly, Napoli has been much better against southpaws this year than same-handed pitching.

As he rejoins his former club, Napoli will look to carry forward a strong start to the second half. Having scuffled badly early in the year, over his last 69 turns at bat, Napoli owns a .267/.362/.533 batting line.

The Diamondbacks plan to select the contract of righty-hitting infielder/outfielder Jamie Romak. The 29-year-old Romak hit .289/.373/.554 with 22 home runs in 458 plate appearances for Triple-A Reno after the D-backs signed him to a minor-league deal last offseason. He played briefly for the Dodgers in 2014 but has spent most of the past several years in the high minors. In parts of 13 seasons, Romak has also played in the Braves, Pirates, Royals and Cardinals organizations, and he has a career .255/.344/.463 line in the minors. He has played outfield, first base and third base throughout most of his career, but this year he has also appeared in 24 games at second base.

Sounds as if Lohse is TR kind of guy. He should fit right in. Make sure and overpay him TR. We don't want to cheat or embarrass a newcomer.

owner Attanasio made it clear that he considers Craig Counsell the team's manager and GM candidates will be told so.

I wonder if Molitor would have interest in the manager gig there?

The Brew Crew could offer the Twins a prospect to let him out of his contract here.

If the Brewers offered Molitor some ownership stock and a lifetime gig in the front office after he was done coaching I could see it as a longshot but possible.

Maybe Molitor would be willing to leave for financial security and to get away from Ryan's pitching follies?

Because really, until Ryan fixes the pitching staff the Twins will always be fighting uphill - and Ryan has shown throwing money at it is not what he is good at.

Stranger things have happened.

Apparently most see it as a good thing. Drafts have been bad lately and minor league talent was rated as one of the worst in baseball. They forget that the trades
for CC and Greinke helped the Brewers make the playoffs. Plus his trades at the deadline have been universally applauded by the so-called experts.

Jays rolling up on the Yanks like that crappy old semi chasing Dennis Weaver.
Teams that sat and did nothing at the deadline are getting passed or caught.
Love what Tulo did for the Jays
That was a no brainer for any contender. Some of this stuff was easy to see.
Sit around and worry about his past injuries if you are a wimpy team afraid to spend and afraid to win.
Pro sports have changed, and those who think they're old school smart get left behind.
Give your roster a boost whenever you can. With the RIGHT choices.
Being classified as an all star means something. Listen to what other players say. When an elite player gets freed up, fight for him.
Or get out of the business.
