The Mariners and Brewers are nearing the completion of a trade, tweets Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports. Passan notes that it remains unclear who is in the proposed swap, but Major Leaguers will change hands.

Harper is 4th-youngest winner overall and 3rd in the NL behind Vida Blue (22 in 1971); Johnny Bench (22 in 1970); & Stan Musial (22 in 1943)

Hearing that just seems foreign ......
Doesn't it seem like we've been watching Harper for a decade?
Amazing.

He'd be in High-A ball if we had drafted him.

Never would have signed him in the first place.

The Dodgers are expected to hire Dave Roberts as the team’s next manager on Monday, sources tell Dylan Hernandez, Bill Plaschke and Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times. Roberts, 43, has spent the last five seasons on the Padres coaching staff, first acting as a first base coach from 2011-13 and then as the bench coach for the last two years. This will be Roberts’ first managerial job at any level of pro baseball, aside from one game last summer as a fill-in for the Padres after Bud Black was fired.

The Dodgers have agreed to sign Cuban outfielder Yusniel Diaz to a $15.5MM deal, according to Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com. Furthermore, the Dodgers and Omar Estevez have agreed to a pact that will pay the infielder $6MM.

Even though he’s only 18, Diaz has been known in Cuban baseball circles for years thanks to his offensive prowess while playing center field in Cuba, Ben Badler of Baseball America (subscription required and recommended) wrote earlier this year. In fact, as a 14-year-old in Cuba’s 16-and-under league, Diaz garnered the attention of scouts when he slashed .367/.519/.517 across 80 plate appearances. In his writeup, Badler praised Diaz for his athleticism, speed, and his production in Serie Nacional, where he faced competition at his own age level as well as veteran talents. Despite having seen time in the corner outfield in the past, Diaz’s best position is center field and that’s where Badler sees him playing at the major league level.

Diaz likely would have been chosen as Serie Nacional’s Rookie of the Year in 2015 but that award went to another player after he defected from Cuba in April.

Friday afternoon, the Oakland Athletics traded right-handed starter Jesse Chavez for left-handed reliever Liam Hendriks from the Toronto Blue Jays. The two seem to be very different pitchers – one coming from the east coast, one coming from the west coast, one’s right-handed, the other a lefty, one starts while the other pitches out of the bullpen.

One thing is obvious about the Oakland Athletics. They play better and have better clubhouse chemistry when Coco Crisp is around. Whether he is in the lineup or not, Crisp is the leader of the Oakland Athletics. His presence provides a certain spark for the team. He’s Coco, and everyone in Oakland loves him.

ANAHEIM -- The Angels scratched "catcher" from their offseason to-do list on Tuesday, signing Geovany Soto to a one-year, $2.8 million contract that gives them a veteran complement to the young Carlos Perez behind the plate.

General manager Billy Eppler said that Soto and Perez will compete to be the everyday catcher.

Lyle, thanks for the link on facebook. but the Twins won't bump Suzu, and they wanted a younger guy, given the crummy depth at catcher.

They still need to add a journeyman to a minor league deal when one of the 2 get hurt. Turner can't hit, Garver is 25 and will be at AA. Wheee!

The Athletics announced on Wednesday that they have re-acquired infielder Jed Lowrie from the division-rival Astros in exchange for minor league right-hander Brendan McCurry.

The capacity in which Lowrie will be deployed by the A’s is unclear. Marcus Semien was the team’s primary shortstop in 2015, but his 35 errors were the most in the Major Leagues by a player at any position. Danny Valencia hit well enough in 2015 (.284/.356/.530) that Oakland seems likely to want to get him regular at-bats. Third base is probably the best spot for Valencia, but the A’s also have Brett Lawrie as an option at the hot corner. Lawrie, of course, has plenty of experience at second base (thus raising the possibility of a Lawrie/Lowrie double-play tandem), but some feel that Semien may ultimately end up playing second base. Lowrie could serve as a left-handed complement to Mark Canha at first base as well, considering that Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle recently tweeted that Ike Davis is likely to be non-tendered by Oakland.

The White Sox announced that they have signed catcher Alex Avila to a one-year deal worth $2.5MM. Avila, who has spent his entire career with the Tigers, will remain in the AL Central and presumably pair with Tyler Flowers behind the plate for the Sox.

The Orioles announced that they have re-acquired outfielder L.J. Hoes in a trade with the Astros and designated first baseman Andy Wilkins for assignment in order to clear room on the 40-man roster.

Hoes, who will turn 26 years of age in March, was initially acquired by the Astros alongside lefty Josh Hader in the 2013 trade that send right-hander Bud Norris to Baltimore. He picked up 333 plate appearances with Houston over the parts of three seasons he spent in the organization, batting a collective .240/.292/.332 with four homers and seven stolen bases.

What's in a name?

The Pirates announced that they have signed first baseman/outfielder Jake Goebbert to a Major League contract.

The Diamondbacks announced that they’ve traded right-hander Allen Webster to the Pirates in exchange for cash considerations. Webster was designated for assignment last week.

Some teams are busy.

The Twins?

working on blowing 21 mill this year on an unproven commodity.

Ryan must be furious he hasn't had the opp to go bargain bin shopping with this Park thing on the front burner.

I think the offseason plan is this.

1. acquire a catcher, check.
2. Sign international star...then trade from that glut at DH/1B/3B to add pitching depth.

I think the winter meetings may see Arcia, Vargas, and maybe Plouffe traded.

The MLB commissioner’s office will investigate Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig under its new domestic violence policy for his role in a reported barroom altercation last night, Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times reports. Renato Bermudez of ESPN Deportes first reported the incident on Twitter.

A report from TMZ Sports suggested that Puig “pushed” his sister at the bar, precipitating a larger conflict and apparently bringing the matter within the purview of the investigatory provisions of the still-untested policy. Commissioner Rob Manfred is tasked with investigating “all allegations of domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse in the Baseball community.”

Puig reportedly will not be charged in relation to the incident, though that fact would not insulate him from action by the commissioner’s office. The domestic violence policy specifically provides that punishment may be levied regardless of whether criminal charges are brought or a conviction achieved. (Specifically, it says that “the Commissioner can issue the discipline he believes is appropriate in light of the severity of the conduct.”)

7:48pm: Happ will receive $10MM in 2016 and $13MM apiece for the next two years of the deal, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports on Twitter.

6:46pm: The Blue Jays have announced the signing of lefty J.A. Happ to a three-year, $36MM contract.

With the signing, Toronto has brought back a pitcher who spent about two-and-a-half seasons with the club before he was traded away last winter. (That swap returned outfielder Michael Saunders.) During his first 291 frames with the Jays, from 2012 through 2014, Happ worked to a 4.39 ERA with 7.9 K/9 against 3.5 BB/9.

Things did not go terribly well for the veteran at the start of 2015. In his twenty-one outings with the Mariners, Happ posted a 4.64 ERA and carried a 6.8 strikeout-per-nine rate that fell below his career average.

But that all changed when the Pirates added Happ in one of the least-discussed moves of the trade deadline. In his final 63 1/3 innings of the season, the southpaw allowed just 13 earned runs, three home runs, and 13 walks while striking out 69 opposing hitters.

Success in the NL.

Who wants to guess what'll happen back w/the DH League?
