It makes NO sense that Happ gets that kind of contract.

Last time J.A. Happ started vs AL club, #MNTwins got him for 7 runs (6 ER) on 9 hits (3 HRs), BB in 3.1 IP on 7/30 at Target Field.

Surprisingly, Terry Ryan wasn't the one to give it to him either.

The Tigers are in talks with free agent starting pitcher Jordan Zimmermann, tweets Jon Morosi of FOX Sports. Sources tell Morosi and Ken Rosenthal that talks have become serious. The Dodgers and Cubs have also been tied to Zimmermann.

MLBTR’s Tim Dierkes rated Zimmermann as the seventh best free agent. Dierkes anticipates a six-year, $126MM contract for him. MLBTR’s Jeff Todd profiled Zimmermann in more detail earlier this offseason. A reliable righty, Zimmermann’s stock fell slightly this season due to a decline in his strike out and whiff rates from 2014. He also reverted to a league average HR/FB ratio, leading to a higher-than-normal 3.66 ERA.

The Tigers and Jordan Zimmermann have reached agreement on a deal, per Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com (on Twitter). Zimmermann rejected a qualifying offer from the Nationals, so the Tigers will have to sacrifice a draft pick in order to sign him. The Tigers select ninth overall – a protected pick – so they would surrender their second pick. The deal is pending a physical.

Zimmermann’s deal is expected to be a five-year pact worth roughly $110MM

I don't get the money for Zimmerman........his fastball had lost significant velocity last season as compared to previous.....as such, I thought this season would be a reclammation contract to see if he can regain the velocity. Obviously Detroit thinks he will. I wanted the Twins to try and land him but not for a 5 year deal....I thought no one would go beyond a couple of years. I wonder what the Nats qualifying offer was......it was 15.8 million for one year. He turned down a 5 year, 105 million offer from the Nats the year before.

His fastball, which used to be consistently above 94 mph was around 90 to 91 last season if I recall.

The Red Sox and outfielder Chris Young are in agreement on a multi-year contract, pending a physical, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter link). Young is represented by CAA Sports.

The 32-year-old Young has significantly rebuilt his stock after a dismal showing with the 2014 Mets in which he failed to live up to the club’s one-year, $7.25MM free-agent investment. Young latched on with the Yankees late that offseason and posted an impressive .282/.354/.521 batting line in 79 plate appearances. That showing led to a one-year, $2.5MM contract to return to the Bronx, and Young exceeded expectations on that deal by a fair margin.

The Miami Marlins are considering hiring former MLB slugger Barry Bonds as their hitting coach, reports CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman.

According to the report, current hitting coach Frank Menechino is likely to remain in his position in 2016, while Bonds would simply be an addition to the staff if hired. Juan Nieves is also reportedly being considered for the position.

Barry's an expert on how to get bigger faster. Who to provide that "assistance" and will take the rap for you. And how to blame teammates for your amphetamines.

Yup, I thought it was a good hire, too.

Stanton will hit 600 feet homers soon.

I was thinking the same thing....with his strength and bat speed and Barry's supplier,

O's add another power stick for the HR friendly East parks, adding Trumbo

Contract $ are insane Zobrist is a nice player, but not a 15 mill/year guy, yet 4/60 is said to be his asking price at age 34

So the Red Sox wound up paying $140 million more for David Price to be their ace than they offered Jon Lester in spring of '14.

Well, I like Lester, but Price is better. Probably the 2nd best lefty in the world behind only Kershaw.

Trumbo is not very good either though, IMO. He's what I fear Park will be.

I may be alone (and am certainly biased when it comes to Price), but I'm not sure it's so crazy. He's the best starter on the market; SP is the one area they're weak in going forward. And he's about as good of a bet as you get in FA starting pitchers. Is he gonna hold up for 7 years? I'm sure not. But what pitcher does?

I'd much rather gamble on Price for $31M/yr than Zimmermann or Cueto for $22-25M/yr. And 2 of the Cubs/Dodgers/Giants are going to be livid that they've missed out on Greinke/Price both.

The game is FLUSH with cash right now. The teams have more money right now than they know what to do with. And that hasn't fully translated to the players as it should yet. I think the Price/Greinke contracts may be seen as bargains soon, as Trout's is already.

Yes. And conditions. Most major college programs have much better accommodations, travel, etc. than minor league ballplayers. Probably get paid more in most cases too.
