Dodgers right-hander Jamey Wright will retire after 19 seasons, ending one of the most remarkable careers in MLB history. He pitched for 10 different teams but had two stints with three of those teams, plus spring training time with other teams. By my count he switched organizations 16 times. He didn't match Octavio Dotel's 13 different teams but he gave it one heck of a run.

Brewers reliever Will Smith will attempt to rehab his ailing right knee, as Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports. The hope is that an approximately three-week layoff before throwing will allow the southpaw to avoid surgery for what has been diagnosed as a tear of his lateral collateral ligament.

Surgery, says Smith, likely would cost him most or all of the season. Given that he’d have plenty of time to rehab after the season even if the surgery is ultimately required, it certainly made sense to attempt the rehab route.

The Rangers have released outfielder Drew Stubbs, per an announcement from club executive VP of communications John Blake.

He had exercised his opt-out provision, Jeff Wilson of the Forth Worth Star-Telegram reports (Twitter links). Texas would likely welcome a reunion on a new minors deal if Stubbs can’t find a gig elsewhere, Wilson adds.

The Yankees started spring training with three legitimate closers. Now, they may be down to one. Andrew Miller's second test on the right wrist he took a line drive off Wednesday revealed a chip fracture.Miller will see a hand specialist on Thursday to determine how long he could be out. The Yankees will be without the suspended Aroldis Chapman until May 9, meaning Dellin Betances, a two-time All-Star setup man, would move to the closer role if Miller is out.

They are out a couple decent relievers for a month. Might be better off not having to name a "closer."

The Boston Red Sox have benched Pablo Sandoval and will start Travis Shaw at third base to start the season, manager John Farrell told reporters on Thursday.

“We talked about it. I’m happy with the decision,” Sandoval told WEEI and other reporters. “They made the decision. It’s the right decision to help the team win. I’m going to be happy. I’m going to be ready on the bench, get ready for anything. I’m going to get ready during the season to do my job.”

Sandoval, 29, is entering his ninth season in the majors but caused a stir at the beginning of spring training by showing up overweight for a second straight year. After inking a a five-year deal worth $95 million, he hit .245 with 10 home runs and 42 RBIs in 2015.

Shaw played in 19 games last season and hit two home runs, nine RBIs and finished with a .333 batting average. He is making just over the league minimum salary while Sandoval is expected to earn $17 million.

Earlier in the week, the San Diego Padres were reportedly scouting Sandoval for a possible trade.

The Red Sox will open the season on April 4 on the road against the Cleveland Indians.

I'm sure he is happy with it, like he said. Signed the fat contract and more time to eat in the clubhouse.

Played too hard; should have Joe Benson'd it

Diamondbacks center fielder A.J. Pollock will undergo surgery for a fractured right elbow, the club announced. Pollock suffered the injury sliding into home in tonight’s spring action.

CC: FIFTH starter

CC Sabathia has beaten out Ivan Nova for the Yankees’ fifth starter role, manager Joe Girardi told reporters incluing Wallace Mathews of ESPNNewYork.com (Twitter link). That appears to put Nova in the pen for now, where he’ll also serve as a swingman option.

Miller will tough it out. Or try to.

Fortunately for the Yankees, it appears they won’t have to replace lefty Andrew Miller on Opening Day. Miller has been cleared to pitch despite suffering a fracture to his non-pitching hand, as Anthony McCarron of the New York Daily News reports. Miller, who’ll hold down closing duties while Aroldis Chapman is out, is not expected to require surgery and will apparently be able to proceed as normal so long as he can tolerate the injury.

I was watching this game on MLB.TV when it happened....did not look serious at the moment, but he did grab for his elbow on his way to the dugout!

10:49am: The Brewers have announced that they’ve signed Torres to a one-year big-league deal. To make room on the 40-man roster, they’ve moved outfielder Rymer Liriano (face) to the 60-day DL. To clear active roster space, they optioned Cravy to Triple-A Colorado Springs and placed Knebel on the 15-day DL with an oblique strain. The move seemingly sets the Brewers’ bullpen with Torres, Jeffress, Blazek, Thornburg, Capuano, Boyer and Pena.

8:37am: Righty Carlos Torres is “expected to sign” with the Brewers, 1500ESPN’s Darren Wolfson tweets. SB Nation’s Chris Cotillo tweeted yesterday that Torres was attracting plenty of interest and seemed likely to get a big-league deal.

Earlier this week, Torres opted out of his minor-league deal with the Braves. The 33-year-old is coming off three useful years with the Mets in which he posted a 3.59 ERA, 8.2 K/9 and 2.7 BB/9, pitching mostly out of the bullpen but occasionally also making starts (although he did not start at all last season).

The Braves have cut infielder/outfielder Emilio Bonifacio, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s David O’Brien tweets. Bonifacio signed a one-year, $1.25MM deal with the team in December. Nonetheless, the Braves had other options they liked better in camp, and Bonifacio’s fate was likely sealed by Jeff Francoeur making the team and the Braves adding Drew Stubbs in a late-breaking move.

FRIDAY: The Padres have agreed to terms with righty Jeremy Guthrie on a minor-league deal, Ken Rosenthal and Jon Morosi of FOX Sports report (via Twitter). The Rangers released Guthrie earlier this week after he exercised an opt-out clause in his contract with them. Guthrie is a client of Excel Sports Management.

Some teams...don't care about "dead money". Especially when some of it isn't yours.
The Braves have designated outfielder Michael Bourn for assignment, David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution writes (Twitter links). They also selected the contracts of outfielder Drew Stubbs and reliever Alexi Ogando. The Braves signed Stubbs to a minor-league deal earlier this week, adding the veteran to a crowded outfield picture, and Stubbs’ addition as a potential backup center fielder likely made the Braves feel Bourn (and Emilio Bonifacio, who was also cut this morning) no longer had much use for them.

As O’Brien points out, the Braves’ two highest-paid players this year will be Bourn and Nick Swisher, both of whom are now gone. Of course, some of Bourn’s $14MM and Swisher’s $15MM will be paid by the Indians, who signed both players before sending them to Atlanta for Chris Johnson in an exchange of bad contracts. Bourn is in the last year of his deal — he has a vesting option for 2017, but almost certainly won’t get enough plate appearances this season for it to vest.

Woot woot! Opening Day!
Liriano going for the Pirates!

Unfair that the Cards, Cubs and Pirates are all in one division.
Two hours of pregame, and I just fully remembered why I ended up hating the Royals by the end of last year.
Tired of them already this year.

Still love that guy's talent and wish we had picked him back up. When he can harness his control he is an extremely talented pitcher.
